i just got home from moose hunting and some fat lady shot a cow moose and not the calf the calf is probably still roaming out there now me and my buddy will hopefully go find it tommorow had to coem out of the shadows as i am quite angry.

so some people where out hunting and shot a cow which is legal..... they may or may have not seen the calf or the calf was big enough to appear as another cow and you complain because they did not shoot it, even if shooting it would have been illegal because they lack any more tags.

Assuming the cow was legally taken the calf is most likely fully weaned and although it may seem a bit heartless to take the cow this is one of the aspects of hunting in general. This sport can be a bit cold if you look at it. However, so is nature in general. A boar bear will kill its own offspring for example. If however the cow was not taken legally that is a whole other issue.

When my Dad and I were hunting, he would always tell me it was better to take the calf than the cow. When I asked why, he told me there was a good chance the cow would have another calf next Spring, but it could be a couple years before the calf (if female of course) could have a calf of her own. Not everyone agreed, but it's what I still do today. JMHO.
Most calfs don't make it through the winter anyways, especially without mommy so someone might a well eat them besides the coyotes. A cow with a calf demonstrates a healthy cow, of which we need to procreate. A cow without a calf may be barren and therefore surplus. But if the reg's say you can shoot either, there's not much to quibble about.

Shooting a cow and leaving the calf... only a 50% chance of the calf making the winter on it's own... plus the cow in question was likely already bred, therefore her fetus...or two are obviously dead as well. Now we have a dead cow, likely her calf and one or two of next springs calfs dead as well. My math is as bad as my grammar but in my books thats possibly 4 dead moose with one shot.

I have shot scats of cow moose with the yearling calf at her side. With a license it is perfectly legal and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Most of those calfs are big enough to fend for themselves and if not it is called "survival of the fittest" Sounds like someone is jealous of "fat ladies" being better hunters then them. Spend more time in the woods and less time #####ing on the internet and maybe you will have some sucess/luck.
