Anschutz 64R Tactical Trainer 64R AND 64MPR

It's not my intention to foment argument. Why isn't standard velocity ammo enough to dispatch gophers. I haven't shot any gophers; how difficult is it to kill one?
A 40 grain match bullet with a BC of .120 yields 98 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, 83 at 50 yards, and 72.6 at 100.
A 36 grain Minimag with a BC of .126 yields 126 foot pounds at the muzzle, 98 at 50 yards, and 81.5 at 100.
Is not 83 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards enough to slay an animal that's about 0.5 pounds in weight?

A kill wher they are is important! No making it down the hole. It would not matter if all shots were head shots, but they are not. Mini mags throw the gophers and make the kill easier. For me mini mags are the standard I use when shooting thousands of gophers . A solid does not have the same effect as a hollow point, but volicity helps a bunch.

I plan on trying out ELEY High velocity HP, CCI Standard, CCI High vel and blazer to try it out...

We all know though, every barrel is diffrent. Just because my shoots *This way* with *this ammo* doesn't mean yours will! lol I'm generally interested also though.

On a side note, turns out the bipod adapter I need is out of stock so I have to wait for that. Going to try and bring a better front and rear rest system next trip.

Very fair question. The truth is, the net result will be the same...no matter what 22 round hits them. However, the difference is an instant bang/flop vs. them looking like they were stung by a bee and flip-flopping and sometimes...making it back to their holes. Having spent a full week on fields polluted with them in the spring of 2016, and a few days the previous year... the best performers were HV hollow points (specifically, my CCI Blazer run through a Waltz die=gaping hollow point), followed by HV solids. However, very few hit with the un-altered CCI Blazers dropped on the spot. The rancher offered us some CCI MiniMags which we shot with an open-sighted BRNO 2E. Effect was similar to my custom Blazers, maybe slightly less "dramatic".

Anyhow...even the lowly gopher deserves a quick death in my opinion and subsonic rounds don't deliver that in my experience.

Extreme winds and an incoming storm is preventing me from trying more ammo out today. Hopefully sunday will be better.

Look forward to the results...but don't get that rifle wet! :) Only know the forecast because that's the only weekend day I have to go after groundhogs...and it looks like it will be a wet one.

If you're still looking or a bipod, since your rifle has the rails built in, consider an M-POD from Mystic Precision. Best, most versatile bipod for the bench IMO. Will by default mount to Anschutz rails.

Damn... Might be waiting till next week then.

Really? Ill look into it. How much is it though? Cuz I have a harris and the attachment is like 20 bucks... I dont need a 700 buck bipod when my harris is fine.

Picked up 50 rounds of Blazer, CCI Standard Velocity, Federal Premium Target and Aguila SuperExtra... I should have some ELEY club and match by the next range date also. Look forward to sharing the results...

I also picked up a Caldwel Front and rear filled bag set.

Well guys, got some of the "bulk ammunition" testing done for my friend 22LRGUY

Im ready to say the rifle does NOT like Center-X Ammo and it is not the shooter.

-192 not -220 or the groups would be even smaller. All ammo go 2 sight in groups.

Blazer - .552 .639 .574 .648 .495 AVRG .582

22 Aquila - .874 .700 .517 .722 .971 AVRG . 757

Federal Premium targert... Was not worth putting on paper, the sight in groups where both over 2 inch's....

CCI Standard
- .884 .889 .828 1.185 1.366 AVRG. 1.030

Center X - .287 .277 .560 .628 .898 AVRG. .530

Tried the Center X and the Blazer head to head at 100 yards and the blazer won...
Blazer at 1.885
Center X at 2.062

The blazer seeing more horizontal drift, the Center X seeing more of a Vertical pattern.

The Blazer's average is close to the Center X for sure. Center X is the most accurate so far but barely...

I blame Center X poor grouping to a VERY WEIRD phenomenon I see happening with it where it lays 1-4/1-3 shots in the same hole then DRASTICALLY changed POI about .500 of an inch either high or low then layers 1/2 shots into one hole.. Can be seen in the last two groups on pic one and in picture 3... Shots have been numberd and pointed out so you can see in picture 3... Note this is an occurrence when shooting from bags and bi pod on multiple outings (about 450 rounds of Center X have done this consistently)

I have picked up some ELEY TEAM and SPORT to test out next outing...

This rifle shoots BLAZER like my CZ 452 Varmint shot ELEY MATCH :nest:

On a side note, im wondering if I should have got a 17hmr over the 22lr...

30 bucks for a box of good 17hmr... 20-25 bucks for a box of 50 of 22lr premium

both cheaper then the 30 bucks for a box of 20 for 223.. thats 60 for 40 rounds... or $75 bucks for 50 rounds...

Very, very nice! I've been eyeing a .22 lr setup for range practice for a while now, yours is one the nicest I've seen!

As for vertical stringing, I'm sure you've checked all the action and scope screws already, take a look at your rear bag. I've been finding that inconsistent rear bag pressure and stiffness induces vertical. Best way to check is to get your crosshairs on the bullseye and move the rifle back and forth on the bags. If your rear bag isn't compressed enough you'll see the crosshairs rise. This will induce vertical on recoil, even if you're only shooting .22 lr.

I have a front tripod Caldwell rest with a Shadetree Engineering joystick top, and a Protektor rear canvas bag with poly pellets. I use the joystick to move the reticle to a an inch or two below the aiming point, and then (with my shoulder pressing the rifle forward) use my cheek to press the stock of the rifle into the bag so that I'm on target. I do this so that I'm not straining to keep the rifle on target (which might be hard to maintain through the shot), and the cheek pressure downwards works to minimize vertical on recoil.

Center X is typically better than the shooter. Some rifles are very sensitive to changes in how they are held. This can change and reveal itself on the target even though the shooter swears hold was consistent.

On a side note, im wondering if I should have got a 17hmr over the 22lr... I don't know that a rifle that doesn't exist would help a great deal, except perhaps in the realm of wishful thinking. The Anschutz 64R Tactical Trainer is not available in 17hmr.

30 bucks for a box of good 17hmr...What is "good 17hmr" ammo? What, with the exception of older Winchester 17hmr, is the "bad" stuff? 20-25 bucks for a box of 50 of 22lr premium

Is this a case of buyer's remorse? Sometimes there are reasons other than the rifle or ammo that explains why shots don't go where the crosshairs are placed. It is an experience I have had more times than I like.

Hahaha, no Im still happy with it. The hunt for ammo is just taking longer then expected lol I still have SO MANY types of ELEY and SK to go though! lmao

I just find it so odd, I can punch out the center of this targets with my 223 at 100... 50 yards cant seem to keep a constant group (with this ammo)

Also it just tripos me out how 3 in one hole then 2 in the other. When I change nothing and all feel like a good shot.

Haven got a chance to use eley match yet. Have soem eley team and sport to try but...

An old target from a different 22lr rifle

Same rifle 40x optic

This was with a 17hmr savage..

SO I mean I know I can shoot... lol

Yes, I shot with bipod and with bags today. At no point did I strain to apply pressure. let the weight of my head nestle the rifle into the bags bringing the cross hairs to the appropriate point. (The center dot is point of aim)

Cabela's had Federal Match 922A on last week for $13.99 per box. This is made to R50 standards.
While testing ammo the R50 was 0.79 and the Federal was 0.76 at 100 yards.
With a coupon I got 11 boxes for $149.95 after tax (You need the 11th box to get over the $150 threshold for the coupon to kick in.
