Any news on the Krinkov style vz-58? (Updated Pic on Page 10)

How would such a short barrel affect ballistics? Many Russians in Afghanistan disparaged the Krinkovs. They wanted a longer barrel to squeeze all the energy they could from the little 5.45 round.

I don't know if you realize, but you aren't a soldier and 5.45 isn't 7.62. There isn't much velocity lost in the 7.62, given FMJ behavior in tissue it won't make any differance.

Everyone knows what ASSUME spells, right?

Anyway....

I was reading an article the other night about shorty 7.62 AKs (custom made American models) and it said that they aren't affected nearly as much by the short barrel as the 5.45 AKs are. Unfortunately it didn't state any specifics as to performance loss.

OK so I put my foot in my mouth, I still don't see why you would be concerned with the loss of a couple hundred FPS? Can't do anything but punch paper with it, and M43 doesn't fragment from what I have seen.

Don't get so riled, B. No big deal. I was just concerned about being to hit the gong at two hundred yards at the range I go to. With the 58 or 858 it is too easy. I was wondering if the shorter barrel would oblige me to hold above the target.

Now you know why I was "so" concerned.

For some reason it will not allow me to post pictures ....
I must be doing something wrong
John

How about some details of the different models? In particular the krinkov does it have a shortened gas system? How long is the barrel?

John,
Has there been any modifcations done to the bolt carrier to help with the "gremlin" problems of the past?

"The bolt carrier has a small tab welded on left side underneath. This is brilliant most semi auto designs do not have this and can have problems with striker following due to an inherent design flaw with auto sear missing. The problem is caused by disconnector timing. On rearward travel carrier hits disconnector and disconnects trigger from sear then continues rearward. After it disconnects the striker rides over sear and can cause a re-connect as carrier is no longer pushing disconnector down. The carrier will disconnect trigger again on the way forward but not until the striker has already crossed sear. This can cause the sear to remain released as carrier continues forward and the striker will follow. This problem is non existent on f/a versions as the autosear will prevent striker from following until bolt is closed and the carrier will disconnect semi auto sear again on way forward. The Czech produced rifles being imported to United States have addressed this problem with their welded tab. The tab keeps disconnector down through rearward travel preventing the possibility of a reconnect."
