Anybody out there reload for 9mm & .45

Given your past loading experience, there is one HUGE difference between rifle/shotgun and handgun. With most powders it is possible to double charge a handgun case.

As you develop a laoding system, you have to be aware of this possibility.

If you load singe stage press, you can put charged cases in a loading block and then eyball them before seating the bulelts.

I checked out the AIM website.... no mention of prices, now I am curious how much they cost. I have sourced some LRN 125 gr 9mm @ $60.00 per 1000, and they are in town so no shipping. I assume AIM is going to be more, but how much more?

I think that I am now settled on the titegroup powder, although if I find some 700x or w231 at a good price at the gun show, I will probably pick it up as well... I am trying to be thrifty... not cheap! lol :)

I have also found some really good prices for 1250rnds of 9mm 124gr jacketed RN @ $198 + shipping, but I cannot shoot it at my indoor club, so it looks like I will be reloading for that at least.

The .45 is a whole other story... it costs a lot to shoot .45... and I like to shoot ALOT! Prices I have found on-line are $315- $400 for 1000rnds 230gr FMJ + shipping. So I am planning on pretty much reloading for all my .45 (although the prices are not that bad).

The prices I have found are in that $75 to $90 (500 ct) range for 230gr. jacketed RN, I have found some LRN 200gr for the .45 as well priced just under $100 for 1000. Is that about right or should I keep on looking for cheaper bullets?

Tks

Yes I know excatly what you mean Gander. When I load for Rifle, it is impossible to double load, that much powder just won't fit in the caseing. I am aware of the pitfalls and mistakes that can happen when reloading Pistol, I am planning on taking it slow and steady, check and re-check. I have a good beam scale, as well as a digital scale. The plan right now is to weigh the shells before during and after loading... to be sure that if I double load, I will catch it before I pull the trigger. I appreciate your concern.

Keep the tips coming!

Somewhere in there is a price for the AIM 124gr 9mm bullets. I think it was $60/1000 but that is going from my leaky memory.

I was mistaken on the price of LRN 9mm at my local shop. its 67.99 per 1000 and its 145 gr.

I am probably going to get some ammo from Canadian BDX as their prices are really good... $198 for 125gr. 9mm. anybody know how much shipping would cost? I am going to fire off an email anyway but I figgured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I use Unique in my 44 mag, and 45. I also use it in my 300 win mag and 30-30 cast loads. I'm the same as you. I wanted something that would cover most of my shooting and Unique is it. I used Winchester 231 and I believe 296 for a while, but had a few too many misfires with lighter loads. I can't remember which one, but one of them is not supposed to be loaded light. Unique solved all of my problems. I don't have any complaints about it being dirty to tell you the truth.

you are asking the exact questions that i would be asking in about 2 weeks,as i have both coming in the mail. I hope. I have everything bought for reloading though as i did some buying at the Yorkton Sk gun show. thank you

That's 296. Same as Hodgdon H110. Do not reduce! (I believe <3% reduction is actually max. Check mfr's websites.)

have you tried plains ammuntion supply out of gull lake/swift current- from the sounds of your gunshop, that's probably where he gets them- as far as the actual stuff goes, i've got both a 9mm and a 45 in the lee 1000 and once i "cured" the stuff with the primer feed, never missed a beat- my turret tends to eat those stupid little rachet gears, so i use it for rifle like 308/338
my loads are a little warm, but here goes- 6.0 of 231 in the 45 under a 200 grain lwsc ( plains) - you don't need jacketed in the 45 unless you want to clear the barrel - the velocity isn't there - you need over 1000 fps to get leading and it's under that with most loads- so i load the bottom round jacketed to cut down on the cleaning
now as far as the 9mm goes, i use a 130 grain lswc ( the old 38 super bullet)
again from plains as it has a better shape and seems to be cast harder than the 124- 4.6 to 5 grains of 231- i've never bothered to chorno either load, but they both shoot well in the beretta 92 and my colt govt 1911

Thanks t-star. You are correct the ammo (lead bullets) at my local store are plains ammunition.

I went to the g-show.... what a dissapointment... like 15 to 20 tables and everything was 25 to 40% more than what I can find online or in town. I drove 45 min each way, but at least I had a good lunch after the show, before I headed back home.

I went to my local store and I am now set up for 9mm at the cost of $260.00 thats for bullets, powder, primers, brass, dies, shell holders for my press and a hand primer. I now have 700 1xf brass (plus the 250 I alredy had), 1000 145 gr. lead bullets and 1000 primers. I had to pay a bit more for the brass than I wanted but oh well, they had all the stuff to get me going.

I am only planning on reloading for the 9mm untill next month when I can gather enough cash to put it all together for the .45.

Thanks for all of your help fellas

personally, i use plains bullets all the time and have for years on end- i did run into a problem with the 124 grin round noce in a norc tok9mm, but the 130 feeds just fine- he casts a very hard slug and is almost capable of handling jacketed velocities - nad if i was in regina, like you, i'd just call him first to see if he has what i need and go pick them if he'll sell to you- your 67 dollar bullets are 7499 through our local here

Seems to be the story of most shows nowadays.

And I bet the sellers wonder why their stuff doesn't move...

b/c i figger my junk is PRECIOUS- it's just as bad on flea-bay- i saw a springfield folding stock go for 900 bucks on there- it's worth like 160

Well I just can't belive it is all. At the last g-show here (Jan.11th?) I bought 2 25rnd mags for my 10/22 (hot lips) but I was unable to find a mag loader... I paid $25 per mag. So I go today to see what I can see, and I have quite a list, a couple of mags for the 10/22, buckmark mags, Hot lips loader, Shells, bullets powder, primers and dies.... I took over $500 with me expecting to spend it all. Hot lips mags are $47.00 & $41.00 Hotlips loaders were $39.00. I saw used 10/22`s for $350. + Used gevarms for $300. + New savage .22 & .17`s with the standard barrel, not the heavy barrel, and plastic stocks for over $375.00!! I just paid $225.00 for a new Savage Mark II BVS in Jan... and that included rings & bases (no scope).

Like I said I was very dissapointed. I don`t mind paying the same as online, or even 5 to 10% more but 25% or even worse 40%... forget about it I`ll just spend my money online... My local store is pretty good for the most part, they will match online prices I find (for the most part) sometimes they can`t, I understad that, but I still give them a chance to beat the other guy.

All I can say is watch your prices....

Cheers

If you are in MJ anyway, it is probably worth the $3 to get in and get a raffle ticket...

I must have seen 25 to 30 people there from Regina, all of use made the drive out. All of the people I talked to were dissapointed with the turn out (vendors) and the prices.

I asked the one guy if he would dikker on the prices of the mags I was looking at. He was asking $41, prices at Russell are $20.99 (I had the current catalogue with me) I told him I would pay $30.... He actually told me to "F**k Off, Order it from Russell then!)

I feel it is important to support these events, but they sure are making it hard.......

Hey all.

Update for ya :)

I bought all the stuff I need to reload 9mm (.45 will have to wait). I gave up on the gunshow, they didn't have much there and what was there was all over priced. So I went to my local g-store and loaded up.

I now have a slightly used set of Pacific dies, (they will be replaced soon, they are just regular not "carbide?") 1000rnds of 145gr LRN, 1000 Remington primers, 1lb of Titegroup, 400 1xf brass (+the 250 I already had), new shell holder for my press, Lee hand primer & a few plastic ammo bins (100rnd cap) Total cost was $260. To top it off the next day I went to the range to test my loads and "found" 250 1xf brass (there were 2 guys shooting beside me and they didn't want to keep their UMC 9mm 115gr brass).

I have settled on 3.2gr of Titegroup pushing a 145gr LRN (all my g-store had in stock), that was the load reccomended on Hodgdon's web site (147gr JRN spec'd 3.2 gr) I loaded 5 rnds at 3.1, 5 at 3.2 and 5 at 3.3, the 3.2 cycled the action well and so did 3.3 but... .1 of a gr, its a little bit less and still does the trick.

What I really wanted was 125gr LRN so I now have some on order. so I guess I'll be doing some tinkering in about 1000rnds or so.

This week I have loaded about 850rnds, plus I went to the indoor range 2 nights this week and I now have 200 brass in the tumbler ready for re-sizing. 2 1/2 hrs a night plus 4 hrs on sat & sun reloading....... single stage!! My right arm is getting some definition now tho! :D lol

I am trying to keep costs down (and shoot indoors, only lead ammo under 1000fps is allowed) and Lead ammunition is spoty for availabilty so I guess I will have to roll my own.

So I guess I should ask.... where do I start when I get my 125gr? can I just keep goin with 3.2gr or should I decrease it.... or increase it? lol or I could just got to the Hodgdons web site and look it up. The first #"s I got were right on the money!

I have just about convinced the wife that I could spend more time with her if she would let me buy a dilion :D She has been on me all week about how I spend all of my time in my "room" playing with my guns! lol "I never shoulda let you get that stupid 9mm...." (in a high falsetto voice)......

I am supposed to go and see one this evening, the guy wants to sell me one and he is tring hard to make the sale! So he has set it up with one of his customers to show me theirs in action!

Cheers

Which pistol are you shooting this out of?? My M-213 from CanAm will cycle with 3.3 grains Titegroup, 124 grain LRN @1.125 c.o.l. It's a pussycat, and a touch smokey(brass a bit smokey, low pressure) but the target never cares.

I shoot outdoors though, so it might not be best for you. Roll up a few and see.:)

According to Hodgdon, min-max is 3.6-4.0 grains Titegroup with 125 LRN.
