Anyone bought a BR-99 yet?

Well it finally showed up! My Uzkon BR99 TR100 CL-11 from NAS Guns and Ammo. I haven't had any time to see what it can do. I'll probably make a fresh post but here is a couple pics.

It comes in a nice polymer case, 3 mags, choke case (3 chokes and wrench) and A2 style front and rear sights. However I did throw a Bushnell TRS-32 on to play around with instead of the sights it came with. Mag release on this one also pops the mags out quite well. See how this weekend goes for getting some range time and then do a better review. :shotgun:

Got out with my BR99 today and had my first stoppage with reliable ammunition. I have had issues with light load 2 3/4" in the past but no issues with heavier loads or 3" shells.

Today the last shell in a magazine failed to feed. The cause was likely operator error when loading the magazine. I was using Federal Prairie Storm 2 3/4" 5 Shot. The magazines have indents in them. One is L shaped and runs up the side of the magazine near the back and then the short leg of the L is parallel to the magazine lips. The rim of the shell got caught on the short leg of the L and got stuck too low for the bolt to catch the shell and push it forward into the chamber.

When you load the magazine the rim of shell normally goes between the indent and the back of the magazine. The indent prevents the shells from sliding forward in the magazine. I started using my finger to push the follower down to make loading easier. What I think happened was I pushed the follower down too far, inserted the shell with the rim below the short leg of the L. Since the magazine can hold 3" shells the was lots of room forward of the indent for 2 3/4" shells. The shell rim got caught on the indent.

Might not make sense but I'll try to post photos tomorrow.

L Shaped Indent

The short leg of the L inside the magazine where the rim of the shotgun shell got hung up.

I loaded the magazine and tried to flip it forward so the momentum would force the shot shells forward and allow the rim to get hung up on the short leg of the L. It didn't work and I was unable to recreate this malfunction. So I still think the shotshell that jammed was loaded into the magazine incorrectly.

Purchased a BR-99 CL1 and have had it out to the range three times now. Most of my shotgun shooting is club level three gun shooting steel targets or static clay pigeons. Up until know most of my shotgun shooting has been with Remington 870 pump shotguns. Currently I am using a 870 Tactical. Hoping to use this shotgun in future club matches.

It came with two five round magazines and three chokes (IM, M, IC). It semi-automatic with a 20" barrel. It has AR style controls (safety, magazine release and bolt catch). The cocking handle is in the right side of the receiver. It came with a rubber cap over the cocking handle. It was useless and fell off immediately. I am not sure if it was only to prevent the cocking handle from piercing the box or was to address complaints that the cocking handle is too small and sharp. It has an A2 style carrying handle with an adjustable rear sight. The rear sight has a round peep sight and a U notch sight. It has a polymer A2 style front sight. There is a full length picatinny rail on the receiver and front hand guard and a short rail on the bottom of the hand guard.

The shotgun does feel as cheap as I expected and actually feels quite durable. The rear sight and carrying handle is functional but is plastic and feels cheap. The shotgun feels slightly front heavy. Of course when loaded the weight of the ammunition doesn't make it feel even more front heavy like tube fed shotguns. The butt is hollow and I have read online that the butt can be filled with a bag of sand to balance it out. I don't think it's a big enough issue so I won't be doing this.

The threading on the chokes is very fine and as far as I know they are not interchangeable with other makes. I find they are a little hard to get the started when threading them in. I am a little concerned about the possibility of cross threading them.

The first day on the range I put 63 rounds of mixed ammunition thought it. I had read that you need to put 100 heavy loads through it to get it running properly. I didn't have that much and most of my ammo was 2 3/4 inch not 3 inch. It ran flawlessly with the 3" shot, 2 3/4" buckshot and 2 3/4" rifled slugs.

I tried Federal 2 3/4" Target Load 7.5 shot. Rounds 6 to 10 fired and partially cycled the action and ended up with the fired shot she'll in the chamber with the bolt closed. Rounds 59 to 63 fired and partially ejected and ended up with the empty shot shell stove piped in the chamber.

The second time out I put 20 rounds of 2 3/4" buckshot through it. Functioned flawlessly. Tired some Winchester Super Target 2 3/4" 8 shot and it jammed the shotgun. I had bought a flat of this ammo and it jams my 870 as well. I have since donated all of this Winchester ammo to club members that have double barrelled shotguns and I won't be purchasing Winchester again.

I ordered two extra 5 round magazines which cost $52.99 + tax each. I remove the rear sight and carrying handle with a Vortex Strikefire II red dot sight. Went out yesterday and sighted the red dot in with 14 rounds of Score rifled slugs. Functioned flawlessly and hitting A zone on a IPSC target at 50 yards is no problem with fairly fast follow ups for the second shot. To test my spare magazines I fired 20 rounds of Kent 3" No. 4 shot as fast as I can change magazines. That was a blast and all 20 rounds functioned without issue.

The Pros
- AR style controls
- reliability is excellent with heavier 2 3/4" loads and anything 3" that I have tried so far
- the cyclic rate seems really fast (I have limited semi auto experience to compare it to)
- field stripping is straight forward
- when loading a magazine with the bolt locked open the bolt release functioned perfectly and loaded the first round every time, no need to use the cocking handle

The Cons
- magazines do not drop free and must be pulled from the magazine well
- so far it does not function reliably with Federal 2 3/4" Target Loads (my standard 3 gun ammo)
- the bolt release sticks out quite far when it is engaged, if you place the shotgun down on a table to hard or pump it after it is placed down the bolt release can function closing the bolt. This could be a problem in stages where the shotgun needs to be abandoned with the bolt open. I have a couple of ideas to fix this.
- 5 round magazines - nothing can be done about this but I would love to run a 20 or 25 round magazine through it just to see how fast a mag dump could be done.

What's the length of pull on the fixed stock version? It looks to be on the long side.

Measuring straight back from the trigger to below the centre of the butt pad its 14 3/16 inches. The Spec Ops stock on my 870 at full extension is 15 inches measuring from the trigger straight back to the top of the butt pad. I normally shot the 870 with the stock collapsed 1 position which is 14 3/8 inches from trigger to top of the butt pad.

I can't find my log sheet so I am not sure of my total round count.

Today's range trip I fired:
- 23 rounds Kent 3" 1 1/4 oz No. 4 Steel Shot (1425 FPS, $22.99/Bx)- no issues.
- 20 rounds Winchester 3" No. 2 Steel Shot - no issues.
- 10 rounds Federal Prairie Storm 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz No. 5 Lead Shot (1500 FPS, $27.99/Bx) - no issues but it kicks harder than the 3" shells I was using.
- 24 rounds Federal Heavy Field Load 2 3/4" 1 1/8 oz No. 4 Shot (1255 FPS, $11.99/Bx) - had one failure to feed, after firing the bolt cycled back far enough to eject the fired shell but not far enough to pick up the next shell in the magazine. Recoil was very light compared to the Prairie Storm and 3" shells.

We did some running and gunning today so empty mags were getting dropped on the ground and they got a fair bit of dirt on them. The shotgun was getting pretty dirty. Mags were run dry and mag changes were done with an open bolt. Hitting the bolt release it was obvious the bolt was slowing down but it still fed the first round every time.

At the end of the day I tried 5 rounds of Federal Target Load 2 3/4" 1 1/8 oz No. 7.5 shot (1145 FPS) but the shotgun still won't cycle with this ammo. Might try again after a good cleaning.

Firing this shotgun always puts a smile on my face. Since its running reliably with Federal Heavy Field Loads I will be using the for 3 gun this summer. The mags fit in the taco mag pouches I am already using.

I haven't had time to get out and shoot any since the first weekend I got it. I've only tried about 20 Federal 2 3/4' 1oz Slugs which cycled without a problem and 25 Federal Target Load 1 1/8oz no 7.5 and 25 of the Winchester target shot. I'd get about 1 failure to feed every other mag. I didn't really keep track of numbers I was to busy being a giddy little school girl every time I pulled the trigger, but I want to say that the winchester cycled more reliable.

mag fed shotguns are notorious for feed problems look at the LA-K12 PUMA or the DA Grizzly and you have your answer...........I do admit this thing looks awesome just wish we could get a mag fed shotgun with no issues.......maybe this is the one?

I have a K12 shotgun no feeding issues and I have close to 700 rnds thru it and it runs like a champ .the only issue I have is that it is impossible to get any more magazines for it .

I hadn't seen the K12 before. Pretty cool looking shotgun. Time to start saving my change again. Since its manufactured in China any chance the magazines are compatible with the mag fed pump action shotguns?
