Anyone hunting new to them rifles this year?

My primary rifle this year is likely to be a .45-70 lever, but I always have a couple back-ups ready to go in case I might be hunting from a stand that offers longer shots.

I didn't plan on having a "new to me" rifle this year...and then this happened: a Steyr-Mannlicher Professional Model M. Wanted one forever, stumbled upon this one locally, got it home, scoped and sighted within just a bit over 24 hours. I'll be using it on days when the wind direction leads me to use a longer-range stand I have. It's chambered in some weird old boutique cartridge I recall playing with many years ago; something called ".30-06"? Anybody heard of it? I'm assuming it'll kill a deer...:)

I recently stumbled across (had no intention of buying) a Browning Acera with a 20in barrel in 7X64.
Reliable had it on their web site and when I was in claiming a consignment I asked to see the Acera.
The wood is impressive (not stock) and is supposed to be a Grd IX Walnut by the late Klaus Hiptmeyer.
Should be headed towards Pemberton this coming week .
The scope will be changed down the road with a Leupold of some sort.

Awww thet thar izz jest ol’vahniller wid ahh bunch’oh sprinkulls.😉

Nice ketch.

I usually hunt with a new rifle each season, sometimes they were bought a year or so earlier but haven't got out hunting yet.

This year my new hunting rig is a Kimber Montana 8400 chambered in 300WM with a Leupold VX5HD 3-15x44 ZL2 optic.

Killed a Bull Elk the second day out with this gun...it goes into the "lucky gun" safe :)

Waiting delivery on a Howa Super Light in .243 for deer, it will be here this week, I also ordered a pair of Talley one piece bases to replace the rail, I am mounting either a 2-7 or a 1-4 scope. The commercial reviews on this rifle are good the reviews on this site are mixed. I have never felt the need for a lightweight rifle but I am waiting for back surgery, it is uncomfortable carrying a weed wacker for 5 minutes, and my Son and I do a lot of walking, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a decent rifle.

Wondering what new rifles or new to you rifles guys are carrying this year.

I’m carrying another oldie, a Ross Scotch Deer Stalker 1907-E in 280 Ross. It had a Lyman 50 on it at one time and then later had been D&T’d for a scope and a custom mount made that fit the Lyman 50 mounting holes. They cut the butt and put a Pachmyer on it. I made some white line spacers to gain some LOP back, removed the bubba’d iron sights, and fitted a pair of sling eyes. Also switched the Weaver K2.5 out for a V1.5-4.5 which I feel suites the area we hunt better. This one prefers 154 and 175gr .284 Hornady Interlocks over anything else I’ve tried, including several types of .287 bullets. Slowly zeroing in on a load for elk for the fall. Cant wait to get it bloody!
I'll be using a Weatherby 307 Alpine 6.5prc deer hunting for the first time. 127 gr Barnes LRX.

I’ll be hunting with my new Uberti 1885 Courtney Stalking rifle in .303 British.
Can’t see the irons so I mounted a Leupold 2-7x32 vxiii
There were issues with this rifle when it was first introduced. Extraction problems or our of spec chambers I want to say, but can't remember 100%.

Have you had any issues with your rifle? They really are striking and I'd love to get one if Uberti has cleaned up their problems.

It's not what you want to hear but I recalled somewhere that the stocks on those rifles were prone to crack. It might be something you want to address before shooting too much.

The following from Google AI on the subject.

AI Overview

A cracked stock on a Steyr Mannlicher Model M is
a common issue, especially in the "Professional" version with the green Cycolac stock. Cracks can also appear near the front action screw on models with a plastic trigger guard/magazine housing due to overtightening. For either repair, the best approach depends on whether the stock is wood or synthetic.

Hey, SC, thanks for the heads-up, but that...along with cracked triggerguard/magwells...and cracked magazines...and material that won't withstand contact with many cleaning agents...is just part of the ongoing litany of potential problems I'm well aware of with these rifles. :(

I'd be more worried if I had bought this rifle with the intention of using it hard as a do-it-all, go-anywhere rifle...but at my age I am no longer a do-it-all, go-anywhere guy. This is one of those rifles which I know I will coddle and baby and treat with kid gloves; I will hunt it occasionally here at home, shoot it occasionally, but in general it's going to live a pretty easy life. Inspection shows that the previous owner took excellent care of it, but also shot it and hunted with it. I was on the lookout for all the regularly-reported weak spots and it seems to have survived this long without any issues. I'm just going to carry on that type of care and use, and I expect it to outlast me. :)

Better to know all that in advance.

Here is some more reading. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/threads/steyr-model-m-calling-the-experts-again.858293/

Unfortunately, the Elk won. Some bugling in the first week and early second week but the hot, windy conditions shut everything down. Lots of food still standing in the fields but movement seemed limited to complete darkness. Had some nice sits in the evening and lovely early morning walks in some interesting country. Was great to be out!

New ugly guns this year. This tikka in 6.5 Swede might get used for late season elk and deer. Taking a cva scout 6.5cm up for deer and bear on the quad this week. Wish it was my 350 legend along for the ride but it's in for waranty. The 6.5 swede will have an apex hunter on it by the time the season rolls around. Just ordered it.

Just got this one running for me, she’s a mid 70’s No. 1B Ruger, she drives 150 Sierra Gameking’s to 2940fps with a dose or Ramshot Magnum and a CCI 250.
Topped with a Zeiss Tera 4-12x42 with a RZ8 reticle.

She will put 3 shots into 3”-3.5” at 400 yards………

I have a Tikka T-3x in 243win, 1:8 twist to hunt for my mule deer doe tag. Havent hand loaded anything for it yet, so 100gr interlocks of Hornady's it will be. I have some 108gr Berger elite hunters loaded up, but just test rounds. Maybe even try some 100gr Nosler Part as well!! Moosin

Yes I picked up a Carl Gustof 4000 built on a Sauer 2000 action, in 6.5x55. I was hoping to get it out shooting, however, Canada Post is the the issue at present.

Have a SS T3 30-06 enroute through CP when it starts back to work. Didn't need another 30-06 but the price was too good to pass over. I might like it more than the one I have already.
