Anyone Recognize These Clowns???

I took offense to CTV calling them duck hunters, so I submitted a letter to try and clarify our position.
Numerous times in your story CTV refered to these men as hunters. Let me clarify, they are not hunters and should not be associated with hunters. There are many individuals who do not agree with hunting and that is their right. However by calling these individuals 'hunters' labels us all bad. For the record, I am a proud hunter and angler. All others like myself adhere to the law, not only because it is the law but because it is the responsible thing to do. Those opposed to us do not like the fact that hunters contribute more to wildlife habitat and enrichment then any other group. We work hard to try and make the general public understand we are not simply killers, rather we are part of the natural order of life. To many, myself included the kill has little or nothing to do with the hunt. The hunt is about the experiance being 'out there' and seeing, smelling and feeling things you can only understand if you do it. what the men in the video are portraying are the very things we stand against. Many laws are broken in this disgusting footage, and many of which ordinary people aren't even aware of. A quick rundown would be killing migratory game birds out of season. Shooting them with a weapon firing a single projectile. (rifle) Using lead projectiles. (The law reads non toxic shot like steel as to not contaminate the enviroment causing unneccesary harm to wildlife) Firing a weapon from a motor vehicle. (Federal law) Firing a weapon from within 50 yards of a motor vehicle. (Alberta law) Discharging a rifle at water. (Common sense, water will cause a bullet to ricochette possibly causing harm) And allowing edible game meat to spoil. I'm sure there are more violations, but quite frankly I couldn't stomach watching any more. These laws were created by hunters for hunters and for the protection of the game in which they pursue. I should also clarify it was hunters and shooters who first reported this video to the authorities in the hopes that these individuals will be aprehended and punished accordingly. Non hunters can say what they want and belive what they want, but sportsmen and women have the utmost respect for wildlife, and wild areas. These men lack that respect and deserve to be caught and punished. At the same time, we as hunters do not deserved to be associated in any way as these criminals.

Minus the spelling errors, (which they would edit) great post.

Opening story???? Things must be real slow in Calgary. As usual the media is overdramatizing.
Probably not a good idea to post any prairie dog shoots on youtube in the near future.

It's running on the National after the Clinton/Korea story...

EDIT: It was mentioned on the National as a preview of the Local news. Oops.

Well here is a GREAT Chance for the POLICE to actually catch criminals in the act of committing a crime with a firearm. Can't they find out the ISP and other info from y-tube?

I recieved a response to my letter.
Thank you for taking the time to write to me with your concerns. I do understand and appreciate what you are saying but I do believe we have distinguished between those who respect the privledge to hunt and the people who participated in this video.

Authorities Close in on Poachers
Wednesday, 05 August 2009

Progress is being made when it comes to catching the young men who posted a video on YouTube of themselves driving around in a car, shooting ducklings illegally. Numerous firearms offences can be seen in the video as well as wildlife offences.

The video has the hunting community furious and the story that was first reported July 31st here on DiscoverMooseJaw.com, has drawn national attention. Members of several hunting forums are on a mission to see these men brought before a judge.

The Minister of Environment here in Saskatchewan is following the file closely and working with their counterparts in Alberta. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is also working on the case and Executive Director Darrell Crabbe says they have figured out where the video originates from.

"We immediately contacted the Sask Environment Enforcement people and over the weekend we progressed to the point that, because of the migratory birds that are involved... they've determined that it may have happening in southern Alberta somewhere."

You can view the video by clicking here and viewing our original story . Below are pictures of the suspects taken from the video for the investigation. If you know any of these men or if you have any information, you are asked to contact Turn In Poachers at 1-800-667-7561.

Another story from the Canadian Press
THE CANADIAN PRESS

CALGARY - A trio of men who shot video while they killed ducks and ducklings on a prairie pond are now themselves being hunted by wildlife officials.

The video, posted on YouTube, shows two of the men firing rifles at the ducks while the third captures their glee on camera.

“Get it, get it, get it - Dave, you got him!” crows the cameraman as one of the men hits his target. “Oh, see the blood?”

It's believed the video was shot either in southwestern Saskatchewan or southeastern Alberta.

A spokesman for Ducks Unlimited, a group that works to preserve wetlands for hunters, called their actions “disgusting.”

“Sportsmen don't shoot young waterfowl, they don't shoot flightless waterfowl,” said Perry McCormick of Ducks Unlimited told CTV Calgary. “It's just waste and carnage.”

He said the three men could face dozens of charges.

“They're shooting waterfowl with rifles, which is not allowed,” pointed out McCormick. “They're shooting out of season, they're not collecting their game, which they're supposed to ... (and they) don't have licences.”

The trio might not be that hard to track down - the video shows each of their faces clearly, including the camera operator, who at one point turns the camera on himself.

Anyone with information on the case is being asked to call the Saskatchewan government's tip line at 1-800-667-7561.

sorry for being so negative, but when these two losers do get caught, all they will get is a slap on the wrist. Maybe a ban on hunting (even though they aren't hunters), or some community service.

This is Canada remember.

One thing that I note as this makes its way through the MSM is that the only contact info posted is to the Sask Wildlife division; I sure hope our boys are on this as well here in Alberta.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are working together on the file from what I've been told.

And there is no way they will get a slap on the wrist for this. Sask Environment and Alberta Wildlife have been trying to crackdown on this kind of activity for the last two years.

I'll see if I can find the threads.

If this is true, it won't be long now...

Wildlife conservation officers hunt for men shooting birds in YouTube video
By Anne Kyle, Leader-PostAugust 4, 2009

REGINA — Saskatchewan and Alberta wildlife conservation officers are hunting for a group of unidentified gun-totting young men captured in a YouTube video illegally shooting ducklings and other protected migratory birds.

The video, which was posted on YouTube last week, has infuriated hunting and wildlife conservation groups in Western Canada, who reported the incident to the authorities.

"It doesn't look like they have been out of the evolutionary tree very long. I can't comprehend (their actions), when I watched I was disgusted,'' said Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) executive director Darrell Crabbe.

"We go though very extensive hunter safety programs with youth and anyone who wants to take up hunting. The major issues, other than safety, that is slammed into them constantly is (hunter) ethics.

"These yahoos didn't show any ethics at any level.''

Gary Provencher, a Ministry of Environment conservation officer, said the ministry has been investigating the incident since learning of the video on Thursday when someone phoned the Turn in a Poacher in Saskatchewan (TIPS) line to complain.

The person, who originally posted the video on YouTube, withdrew his registration with the site, but apparently someone else copied the footage and put it back up on the site, Provencher said, adding investigators have determined the incident occurred in Alberta.

"By looking at the background in the video footage of a person in the car shooting at a bird sitting on top of a sign, some sharp eyes in our department noticed that those signs are not Saskatchewan signs,'' Provencher said.

While the ministry is continuing its investigations, Alberta has taken the lead role in the investigation because it appears the incident originated there, he said.

If the culprits and the location of the incident can be identified, Provencher said, the shooters, who incriminated themselves on the video, are going to be in "big trouble'' because they could be facing "a multitude of charges.''

The SWF, which began receiving complaints about the video early Friday morning, is sending out a global e-mail to its thousands of members in the hopes of being able to identify the culprits.

Anyone with information is asked to call TIPS at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 (on their mobile).

"We want to make sure everyone realizes that these guys are not hunting. What they are doing is going out and killing things for no reason,'' Crabbe said.

"We would like to see them brought to justice as soon as possible."

Even if thats all they get at least it will show the rest of the public out there that the hunting community will not put up with that crap and its not what hunting is about! Maybe it will make people think twice before illegally going out to shoot waterfowl. You just never know when a CGNer will pop up and expose you! Good job to all those involved in exposing these scumbags!
