AR.308 What is available?

The DPMS rifles that are more combat orientated cost more. The base rifles are meant for varmint/target and hunting. It's not geared for combat.

However the bull barrel varmint/target rifles are the ones that people have had good success with accuracy wise. Considering I'm shooting range use only (BS restricted weapon stuff), this fits the bill.

Would I take the Target LR-308 out to Iraq or A-Stan. Nope. My requirments are a bit different and are aimed more for accuracy, less for combat dependability.

As a range gun, the target Lr-308 rifle is pretty nice and at a good price point.
I don't really know much about the other models, other than they appear to have the common items for combat. Dust covers shell deflectors, flash hiders etc. The target ones don't have these features and as a result they cost less.

The Armalite may very well be a better rifle. However after putting in a $140 RRA NM trigger for the DPMS, the Armalite is still $1000 more.

I follow you... we all have to abide to our (limited) gun budget... :(

In my book to get the best rifle your can afford is the right choice. The best example is that I'm currently having an AI clone made . It will shoot as good as the real thing which I can't afford. It'll maybe be a tad less sturdy, but for my use it won't make a difference.

if you want look, go for the Armalite Ar10T or Knight Sr25, if it practical and price wise, then go with DPMS, but I got to say that the Ar10T are very accurate rifles, not sure about the ar10 dpms, or Knight Sr25...

But they are all good for Combat, just get a Can of spray pain, in dark color, and you got a combat...

You better of get youself a Norinco M305, chop down barrel, installed bling to upgrate it, and still save alot of money over the Springfield M1a Socom II, I saw a couple of them done nicely up in the Edmonton area...

what rail systems will work with a norinco? the rails on the socomII look fine, do you think they would match up?

thanks gunboy for jumping in.

Sure Deckard. Here's a couple. This is the LR-308 model with 24" stainless bull barrel. RRA trigger and Panther Tactical grip have been added. Everything else is stock. Given the option I would probably go with the fluted. At the time it wasn't available.

Deckard, you can order a shell deflector and cover as options. I know left hand shooters would probably want that. :D

Here's a good review on the more tactical version the LR-308B. 18 inch fluted, subdued version. It's very nice. I wanted the 24 for range work. If these weren't restricted I'd get a LR-308B as well.

Vltor makes the rail system for SA, but apparently only sells them through Springfield Armory... (as said here: http://www.vltor.com/socom.htm )

Supposedly the rail system isn't just "drop in" theres some differences in the barrels or something.

Best bet is to Email SA about it, and ask them how easy it would be to install one of the rails onto an existing M1a (dont tell them your gettin a Norinco, or they'll tell ya "sorry cant do it").

They were supposed to be super hard to get into Canada when i was first checking them out, but who knows now.

It would probably be a gunsmith doable project.... but the cluster rail system is gonna start to get mighty expencive. You may also wanna check out the Knights Armament rail system for the M14/M1a. Its just the top/side rails (not bottom) but looks pretty good also.

Thanks Epoxy. I will start the saving up. But the Norc bullpup comes first. LOL

The case deflector is a must. I once got a hot 7.62 brass down my shirt in the army.

Anyone know the current status of the LWRC SABR?

you should check with your firearms officer. if they are not on the prohib list you should be able to get one. i had a similar situation while looking into the pof.308 (patriot ordnance factory). the trick is to find someone in the usa who has export to canada.
i found leroys big valley gunshop in montana very helpful and another gentleman in saskatchewan at prairie gun trader very helpful and willing to assist in your import needs.
good luck.
