Yeah I saw that one. I may have to switch out my regular Moe as I find I rub the knuckle of my middle finger raw on the trigger guard when running drills. I wonder if a different angle would help? I like the Moe though as I have the bolt grip core and store a complete bolt, firing pin, gas rings and a few other pins and such in it.

I had to quit reading after the first ten or so pages.
To the OP, RRA makes an upper without the forward assist or brass deflector for the 9mm. It can be modified for 5.56 by simply drilling a hole for the gas tube and milling the cutout for the cam pin.
Les Baer also makes an upper without the FA, it retains the brass deflector but I'm not sure if his products are available up here.
As for is the FA useful? I've been taught to use the FA by the Army for IA drills like many others on here, that doesn't mean that I actually use it. Can't remember the last time I touched it actually. Does that mean that it's useless? No, the weapon has to work in all environments (-40 to +40) and in all conditions. Others have mentioned this already but it seems to have been ignored by others. The only time I've ever actually had to use the FA was under extremely cold conditions (-20 to -30) where I'd been carrying my rifle around loaded but not ready (happens all the time in the army, even overseas), when it came time to ready my weapon the action had gummed up suficiently and the rounds in the mag will actually stick to each other so that the bolt wouldn't strip a round. I tried the old tap and rack numerous times to no avail so I ended up trying the FA out of desperation and guess what? A round was chamber and I was able to carry on. Firing the weapon warmed it enough that no further stoppages were encountered. I'm no big fan of it but I do believe that it has its place.
