Arguing with a BC CO in the butcher shop..... hmmmmmm

fair enough, you have a fair point, was not looking to spar with anyone when i posted this thread and was more hoping it would lead to a discussion provoking more understanding of the mule deer regs here that as other BC members have suggested, are being misunderstood by hunters, game cutters, sporting good stores selling tags and now apparently CO's as well.
peace.

Class Act 45

Good on the op for knowing the regs. I didn't read this whole thread but there is sure a lot of disrespect towards co's in the first few pages. I guess I've been lucky in my dealings with them but every time I've been pulled over here in sask, it's been a pleasant experience. It usually involves a friendly conversation and I usually offer a cup of coffee. A little respect goes a long way from both sides. Just like any professional there are good ones and rotten ones that ruin it for the rest.

to be honest it's the first time I've went off on a CO but only because his whole approach was completely blowing my mind at the time and he was way off side.
I called in to make an appointment to discuss the matter and perhaps apologize for my part in walking away and going home instead of calming down and going further with it when it happened.
I was able to leave a message that outlined the situation, time, location ect. left my address and # and stated they are welcome to come to my home and inspect my freezers and tags should they need to.
There are regular CO's here in my area that have thier jobs full time and I've had interactions with them off n on while fishing, hunting, 4x4'ing and firewood cutting. I've never been approached by them where thier attitude came first followed by a mouthfull of garbage next LOL Therre are other CO's here that are on rotation during certain parts of the year like ice fishing season and hunting season.
I've never had a firearms infraction, wildlife infraction nor fishing infraction in my entire life, priding myself on following the rules and being a conservationist first, a "sustenance" hunter and fisher second. Despite what some folks read into my internet personality I am completely supportive of law enforcement and conservation/dfo officers and the job they do..... until they come at me full of piss n vinegar and on top of that they are dead wrong on the subject at hand. I'm one of those guys who will absolutely stand up for myself on the spot and it has zero to do with being a "freetard" or a tough guy..... It's called being a man ;)

I've had positive interaction with CO's at the range and I've had Greg Hoyer phone and thank me after a Report a Poacher call I made.
The ride along civilians with the CO's that are going through your stuff behind your back while you're talking to the CO gets me wound up.
And no not plainclothes CO's

Who are these "ride along civilians" and why are they going through your stuff? That sounds a bit strange. I have had numerous interactions with CO's here in Alberta but have never met any that had civilians with them, at least not yet........

CO's are also peace officers in BC if i remember correctly but need to call rcmp for anything under the motor vehicle act , which i know from experience.

The B.C. CO's have more required firearm training and qualifing then the RCMP and they have the Law enforcement training as well as wildlife training..
But I'm not sure if they have arrest powers?

That's probably more of a case they don't know the highway traffic Act. I'm sure if they had the act with them and we're more knowledgeable they could have laid charges.

no we waited for some time at the road side while listening to the 100 mile rcmp chase down a suspect on hwy 97. Heard it all over the radio from the CO as he was trying to get an officer out to deal with my motor vehicle infractions. The infractions were, no license plates and no proof of insurance because i just plumb forgot to get them off the kitchen table.... so if he could have laid those charges under the motor vehicle act, he would have.... and we waited at least a half hour before he decided he had better things to do at that time of the early morning. He let me know that too and the what comes around goes around conversation took place next and should i hear of any game meat sales and such things, to give him a call. That was 100 mile's head CO , about 5 years ago out past canim lake on the north side. Maybe things have changed in the passed couple years to thier powers regarding motor vehicle act stuff.

I think you are on to something there.

I remember near the end of a busy midnight shift ( 0530 ish ) pulling down a street that ended at a river next to a marina and boat ramp. There in my high beams was 2 fellas pulling an aluminum boat in. They were like deer in the headlights looking guilty as heck, the one guy was holding a stringer of pickerel I think, that went from his chest to his knees. Not knowing limits, seizure of fish procedures or the specific laws that they may be breaking, and not wanting to stay awake hours until a CO arrived to deal with the possible infractions, I put the cruiser in reverse and found a quieter place to finish my paper work.

you guys are hilarious.
you can tell by my post that i was needlessly hostile, aggressive and rude?

get a life.

That’s also how I read it. It’s possible to respond to someone who is in error in a calm demeanour and to educate them in a fashion that won’t wind up escalating hostilities, it’s called people skills. Many of us who actually have people skills don’t suffer fools either, I’ve seen a few such people posting in this thread.

I disagree but I was there so ....
I pulled in, backed up to the cooler. Butcher, who i've know for many years and is a straight shooter himself, met me with his usual big smile.
Went inside the office, paid my bill while the butcher himself brought out my meat boxes and loaded my vehicle.
happy times so far....
I did not see the CO when i went in, he was in the walk in inspecting hanging animals.
As I opened the door of my vehicle to hop in, my business concluded......The guy comes running at me waving a piece of paper yelling at me to stop.
He is full of aggression, face colored and acting as if I am guilty of something, demanding my meat boxes be unloaded.
I first asked ..... surprised and confused.... "what did I do?" I follow all the rules to the letter, ask the butcher.
He doesn't de-escalate.... he gets right in my face pointing at his paper saying I killed 2 mule deer and was in violation.

and I went off..... with a heated response that he was dead wrong, my tags and the sheet in his hand clearly identify region 2 and region 5.... fully legal.
I further retorted.... how can you be a CO if you don't even know the regulations?

I then said angrily..... you guys know where I live, your boss knows who I am, I'm going home to get my legally killed meat to my freezer.
and I got in my vehicle and drove away.

whole story.... there ya go.
if you have a problem with it.... get stuffed?

any one of you would have done the same..... if not you either have zero testicular fortitude.... or you just argue to try and win the internet LOL

It sounds like you were completely in the right or you would of had a visit by now. The young CO screwed up plan and simple. I agree they need to know the regulations they are enforcing.

I think his superior set him straight and that's why you haven't had a visit. Good for you OP for standing up for yourself. They should know the regulations, I think he got a good lesson.
