I'm looking for a nice Arisaka Type 99.
Early model, matching numbers, VG condition, with bayonet and monopod and all markings intact. Also the secret to imortality... probably both be found at the same place.
Any ideas?

Nope, no ideas.....but here's a picture of what you're looking for just to motivate you some more...

...don't give up, keep looking, and always have money in your pocket in case you find one..

I've also been looking for one for quite some time. I had an ad on the EE for a while, with no leads. I think I'm going to import one from the U.S., but I want to find a couple other guns to import at the same time, as import fees go down if you bring in more than one firearm.

I've got a Type 99 in excellent condition with all the fixin's (beautiful bore, early model, AA rear sight, monopod, dust cover, cleaning rod, original mesh sling for the take-down version, dies, Norma brass etc.), pretty much what you're after except that it's not matching, the 'Mum has been ground off and the monopod is a repro. It's not for sale, but for illustrative purposes I'm thinking that I wouldn't part with it for less than $800. The rifle you've described would cost exponentially more, like $1,500 to $2,000 (if they're cheaper in the States, you'll end-up spending this much after brokerage fees. Spoken from experience here.). The big thing is a matching dustcover (I've never seen a matching one on a Type 38 or 99) and an original monopod. Type 99s can be found with a matching bolt more often than Type 38s, but it's the dustcover and monopod that will make it harder than a whore's love to find.

Best of luck, though! And many pics if you ever do find the one of your dreams!

I just bought an early Nagoya 99 with all the fixings and intact mum. Even in the states it was $800. After work importation, duty, taxes, ship, etc. It will be over $1200.

What you are asking for is NOT cheap.

What you are asking for is NOT cheap.

Agreed.

The rifle I cheekily posted above is a Nagoya Series One that cost me NZD$1220 in 2010.

It is 100% original, all matching - including dust cover - has some battle damage, and I know its history right back to the disbanding of the 3rd NZ Division in late 1944.

Unfortunately the bore is toast - so much for chrome lining being impervious to corrosive ammo.... but it wasn't bought as a shooter, so I don't mind.

I think anyones best bet for getting down on any Type 99 is to get some in from the US. I'm looking at importing a couple of Last Ditch Type 99s to add to my collection in the coming months.

Seeing as Canada wasn't heavily involved in the Pacific Campaign, I think it would be fair to say there aren't any bring backs (although having said that, was Canada involved in the Occupation of Japan?) for you guys to get your hands on.

For every one Type 99 we see here in NZ, we see 20 Type 38s - I guess thats' mainly what was issued to Japanese forces in the areas where NZ troops opposed them...

My search is over!!! Well sort of.
What I found certainly met my needs. It has, unfortunately, been somewhat de-flowered. Although all numbered parts match and it has the original monopod, cleaning rod and sling there is regretably no dust cover. The bore is near perfect and it is an early 1941 Nagoya. So... I added it to my collection!
The nice part is the price and where it came from! My uncle had it and his dad brought it back from Japan in 1946! I didn't even know it was there! He gave it to me for only $400!!

Just need to figure out a value now.

I'd need to see pics, but the monopod, if an original and not a fake, adds considerably to value. The defaced mum and missing dust cover will lower value somewhat. It's likely worth a good bit more than you paid though. Post some pics and I'll tell you what I think it's worth.

Now you need to find a nice transitional and a mummed substitute standard rifle. If you really wanna get fancy, google "rope hole arisaka" and get ready for some serious sticker shock - they make Kriegsmodell vet bringback K98ks look like a bargain ;)

Funny you mention that Claven, I have been seriously considering the idea of importing a proper "last ditch" Type 99. Of course if your going to do it, as mentioned spend the cash and get a collectable piece, not a mix master.

Here's the substitute standard Type 99 I'm waiting for Prophet River to deliver to me, a very late 7th series Nagoya, matching, with mum. Only issue with it is someone back in the '40s stamped the caliber onto the barrel.

Notice the really rare rear sight ;)

Here is my early 7th series Nogoya by comparison, which is merely a typical transitional 99, though it has the rare serrated cocking piece and short-type rear sight. This one is matching, but ground mum.

These are fun rifles to collect - nearly endless variations.

So far it's not too bad, but I don't have either of these "in-hand" yet. I'm importing 3 rifles and a handgun in this batch, my first time using Prophet River.

Assuming it continues to work out well, I'll be a repeat customer.

I have bought two type 99's in the last month, both are ground, one is all matching and correct, the other for less money is all matching rifle but mismatched bolt ( and has a seen a whole lot of S**t).
Both have chromed bores which are in super shape.

Now considering the history, that the Japanese would not surrender with an un-ground mum as it would offend the Emperor, The Japanese and the Americans both ground the mum prior to the soldiers
surrender in order to save the Emperor's honor.

So..... Being a die hard Military collector

I accept any Type 99 ground or not as original.

I don't mind a ground mum on an otherwise nice rifle, but I'll admit to seeking out mummed examples of a variant whenever possible. I figure a mum adds about $50 to $100 to the amount I am willing to pay for a type 99 if I need that variant.

To put things in perspective though, any Type 99 you see for sale in the US - add $250 for import, add $35 to ship to the FFL, and another $35 to ship it to you after import. Add GST for the sale price and you start to see how the gunbroker prices aren't all that low after all. I figure an average of about $400 is added per gun if you import them one at a time. The price goes down marginally per rifle if you import several guns at once.

All of a sudden, it makes more sense when ppl advertise decent arisakas at over $700-800 here in Canada these days!!!

Photos of the Japanese surrendering arms after the emperor agreed to unconditional surrender are interesting. Here are a few more.

Here's a neat photo of Japanese women on the Japanese mainland drilling to do their part to fend off the American invasion they thought was coming (instead of the Enola ###).

Here's one of officers surrendering their swords after capitulation. Bet there's some nice family swords in this photo.

And just for the lovers of other Axis arms, here are Whermacht troops surrendering their mausers in May, 1945:

Finally, since I mentioned the invasion of Japan that never happened, here's the Aberdeen Proving Ground photos of the secret weapon the US Ordnance was building for the invasion of the mainland. It never had to be used since the A-bomb caused invasion to be called off. Nicknamed "Little David", it was a 914mm mortar - the largest ever built. It fired a shell weighing 3,650 pounds over a range of up to six miles.

Musta made a helluva bang.

Mine is no where near as nice as what has been posted here, but it is all matching and MUM intact. Came with 2 boxes of ammo and a bayonet. Happy to have her.
