started by CGN member Gatvolboerseun, I decided to buy the ATA Etro Non-Restricted 12 Ga Shotgun. I ordered it from Bullseye Sports on Nov 14, it just arrived today (Nov 25). I could not find a lot of info on the ATA shotguns, so I thought I would add my comments here, in case anyone else is interested in this shotgun.

It came in a plastic sleeve inside a cardboard box with some styrofoam nuggets and included an owners manual, stickers, FRT printout, invoice and a really ugly orange and camo hat (I forgot to take a picture of the hat).

Although the shotgun appeared to be wrapped fairly well there was some wear on the bottom of the pistol grip:

and there was some wear on the barrel in 3 places (actually I now think it is white paint on the barrel):

The front sight has a white paint run on the side, and I suspect this is the source of the white paint smudges on the barrel:

Here is the shotgun field stripped:

It is somewhat similar to the Remington 870, and the controls are all in the same place which is a big bonus for me since I already own 2 870 shotguns. Some nice features are the ball detent magazine cap retention (similar to my Wingmaster and 870P), very smooth action and trigger, red anodized hi viz follower and a nicely designed, slotted, loading gate. One thing I noticed immediately is the weight difference compared to an 870; having an aluminum receiver and magazine cap certainly cuts down on the weight. I weighed this one and it is 2.3kg. I have tried cycling a couple of snap caps and everything works perfectly and the rounds are ejected 5-6 ft across the room. I had hoped that the rail on the forend would be removable, but it is moulded in and it appears to be a bit out of spec because I had a heck of a time mounting my Inforce flashlight on the rail.

Hopefully I will get a chance to shoot it this weekend. Given the light weight and lack of a stock, this could be "interesting".

Not perfect but it looks great and is on my list.

My Fabarm is an aluminum receiver and yes, it is much lighter than a steel 870. A bit more recoil but it's a shotgun..... you go into it knowing it's gonna suck a bit !

Thanks for the mini review.

They care just a 're branded Turkish shotguns, there are 5 plus brands being sold in Canada now, its the same gun .
I'd send it back with those makes. Looks like its been in display and banged up or not boxed well when shipped.
all that aside, these Turkish shotguns are way better made then norinco.
Great value force price. We have started making a full line of accessories for these guns.

^^^ There's no doubt that these Turkish guns are all basically the same, howver, this particular pistol grip shotgun has a non restricted status which makes it very appealing. What other "brands" have a similar shotgun with the same classification?

As you know, simply buying a regular shoulder stock version and putting a pistol grip on it will change its classification to restricted due to OAL.

If this one is non-restricted the other 5 + Turkish brands that came from the same factory will get the same FRT in no time

I think it will take 10 minutes for the Turkish factory to sale the same model under 5+ names to other brands. Looking at this shotgun it comes 100% from the same factory as 5+ other brands

It looks exactly like armed shotgun from west rifle. Everything is the same minus pistol grip and $130 more expensive.

Until you add a pistol grip on it and then it is clearly NOT the same classification. You've now just changed the classification from non restricted to restricted. That's largely the appeal of it to begin with.

CC s. 84(1) "prohibited firearm" (b): This is another clause of the same law -- the one cited immediately above -- and it applies in the same way. If the firearm ARRIVES at the "less than 26"/660mm in overall length" condition by "sawing, cutting" etc., then it is forced into the "prohibited firearm" class. If it left the factory at that too-short length, the limit does NOT apply. It is non-restricted, UNLESS it is semi-automatic AND centrefire.

Section 84 CCC
(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or
(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,
(c) an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or
(d) any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm;

So if it comes from the factory less than 25.984 inches (660mm) it remains non-restricted. I always thought that it had to remain over 660mm to meet the non-restricted classification. Could they make our laws anymore messed up. Well I suppose they could...

They're all the same. There are only a handful of high quality manufacturers in Turkey, but with the dollar where it is, you can't expect much from $200 shotguns. Just clean them up, and enjoy them for what they are.

It's not that easy, some shotguns (factory made to less than 660mm other than semi) are restricted and some are not restricted, it's seem that the RCMP FRT lab is doing whatever they want depending on the flavor af the day.
