I don't do soap or anything like that, just a kettle full of hot water, then normal cleaning with lots of lube. I have NEVER had any rust. and all the surplus ammo is corrosive

Bfiles said it with the coil chop a little and keep going to see if you improve your situation. Also, he is right about the ammo. I shoot czech surplus. Never really had a hiccup except a fte the first day I took it out. Might of been a lack of lube as pointed out by another member. In terms of ejection I can't say exactly as the casings hit the roof or pillars where I shoot. They go at least 5-7 ft up before hitting the roof.

Ya, I should have mentioned that the 20-30' is including the 5' or so the gun is already off the ground if I'm standing and shooting it. I'm in the same boat as you....shooting under a tall, sheet metal awning at the range.

I'm lazy....I don't clean mine much....

Heck, I'm not sure I've ever actually really cleaned the Century.....and it's got about 1500 rounds through it so far.

I'll see if I can take a vid of the ejection of my cases tomorrow. It's not as limp as the others. I feed mine a steady diet of Czech surplus.

I don't know why everyone f@cks with boiling water and soap... I spray mine down with G96 (bore too), let it sit a few minutes then wipe it clean and bore snake the bore with solvent. I've done this for more than a decade through a bunch of SKS's and another VZ. I've never had any issues with corrosion.

sean K, i dont think it has any thing to do with the pair of bleed holes in the gas block nor the gas piston spring .

i measured all 3 of my VZ58 and this is what i got .

1. barrel 18.75" , barrel port 7/64" , pair of bleed holes 9/64".

2. barrel 15.5" , barrel port 7/64" , pair of bleed holes 9/64".

3. barrel 11" , barrel port 9/64" , pair of bleed holes 9/64" .

and my piston springs on 18.75" and 11" are the same length while the 15.5" is 1/8" shorter , i reckon if you compress the spring while on the piston and it passes the piston shoulder then its good to go cos the shoulder is whats stop the piston from going any further.

why dont you for the heck of it , try a different ammo .

Ya, I'm inclined to agree about the bleed offs.....I think the initial gas hitting the piston gives it all the momentum it's going to get and that slowing down how long the gas takes to leave the system shouldn't affect how much velocity the piston has to hit or push the carrier back.

Is Wolf generally considered better than Brown Bear in terms of how hot it is in 7.62x39? I don't mind picking up surplus to use in it eventually....but I don't have a good local source.

One thing I did NOT want when I started this SBR project was another SBR (I have 5 now) that would only run certain ammo types. I was assured by my builder that the VZ wouldn't have such a requirement but he's much more knowledgeable about AKs than VZs....so maybe that statement is true for an AK....I simply don't know.

I guess it is what it is at this point. I'll get it running as best I can and decide from there.

Anyone know what would happen if you test fired the gun without the spring on the piston at all? I'm afraid it might hang up and damage the gas block and/or bend the piston.....but I'm not sure and I don't want to be the guinea pig for it. Just wondering if anyone here has tried it.

Looking at my Century 16" VZ....(the D-technik SBR is with the builder).....the spring easily compresses past the shoulder.

I'm just wondering if for testing purposes, if I could fire it without the spring entirely to see if cutting anything off would actually result in any benefit.

It is unlikely anyone can comment on ammunition in a way that is useful to you. You need to understand that Czech military surplus (corrosive) is essentially the only ball game in town up here. There is no Wolf, Tula, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, etc. except for small quantities that are smuggled in by snow birds returning from Florida vacation. There are a couple of brands of new manufactured non-corrosive ammo, but they are 2-4 times the cost of Czech surplus, so everybody shoots Czech surplus, manufactured between 1959-1993.
