ATVs in the Mud

Yes tooling on expensive toys is fun. Why do you think they're toys? Are you one of those guys that spends all day shining his rig while everyone else plays in the mud?:nest: No i'm not saying wrecking sensitive crown land is a good idea but sometimes it's fun to get dirty.

Sorry...there is more sh!t than shine on my Polaris. ;)

To you it may be a toy...but to me it's a tool, a piece of machinery that is indispensable to me almost on a daily basis.
Whether it be checking on the herd, hauling firewood, or allowing me to hunt the far end of the farm if I have an hour to spare.
To abuse it and have it out of commission for a week, along with costing hundreds of $$$ is damn stupid.

Fines could be issued and should be for riding in restricted area's.Let not get into a position that anyone who crosses a creek is subjected to a fine, that would be getting ridiculous.WE should be responsible but lets not suggest we start living in bubbles. We also shouldn't assume anyone who mud rides is an environmental terrorist, there are places that it is acceptable to do so,the spawning grounds of fish is not the place though.

Yup, it's called private land.

so we should start a fund raising campaign to install a bridge on every creek or mud hole on every trail in the county ,I guess. So your gone hunting with your atv along a new trail you just found, you've covered 15 miles or so and come to a nasty mud hole,do you turn back, check the depth and carry on ,or cut a new trail around it....

Yup, it's called private land!
Alot of canadian feel this is where we should do all of our hunting...

There is a difference between crossing a creek out of necessity, and thrashing a creek. Same with a mud hole. Other people use the trails as well, and when some dickhead tears the bottom out of a mudhole and turns it into a quagmire he needs a kick in the nuts. Not everyone runs Vampires, and has a winch.

I know a little about the facts of this story....Safe to say that not only where those idiots ripping up a nice piece of wetland but the bigger problem was that it is in a drinking water catchment. This occured in the Okanagan, there ain't that much water around at the best of times and anyone who lives there knows how often we get "boil water" advisories in the summer. So these jokers are rippiing up a good piece of wetland and then going home and wondering why the water from the kitchen tap is brown...or they can only water thier lawn every other day. I'm happy they got fined...they're idiots and they shold be treated as such...just wreaking it for the rest of us. To me they where not "ATVing" they where Mud Bogging. Riding your ATV on crown land is the same as hunting on the same land...be respectful and carefull and we'll all get along. Mudbogging is the same as "shooting", when I go shooting, I go to the RANGE, a place designed for it. If I where to shoot thousands of rounds of highpowered rifle and shotgun, all year round on the same piece of crown land I can understand that some other people might not like it. Mudboggers might want to get together and find themselves a RANGE where they can play in the mud when ever they want. BTW I do shoot on crown land quite a bit and I'm very sure that unless you can hear me at the time, you would never know I was there after I drive off.

Getting to be a touchy subject. As with most "recreational" pastimes, there will be a ton of rules and regulations coming to try to curb the damage done. I don't have an ATV anymore, and when |I did I used them for work, but I see the growing number of quads being carted around on $75,000 pickups, and being used only for "recreation". Some of these types could care less about the damage they do, but I hope most are careful. Too bad some twits have to spoil it for the rest.:(

It is not hunters riding to their stand or checking out a new area and crossing a wet spot on an already established trail that we are talking about, though those individuals will be the ones who suffer most from the actions of the recreational meatheads.

The way it presently stands, you are not allowed to be in possession of a firearm on a quad from 1 hour before sunrise until noon in most areas of Alberta. If hunters would respect this rule I would have no issues with using them during the hunting season. Instead, most trails and roads have a continuous procession of quads all day long. If this is the way quad owners want to play, then I will fully support the government restricting their use.

Cheers.

I agree that there are idiots out there and they do make a lot of atvers look bad.No one should condone people simply tearing up ground just for the sake of tearing it up.All I am saying is we need to try all other means before legislation is used, once we start legislating atv's,then skidoo's then mountain bikes,it won't end.

Unfortunately, you are right. But it also seems to be the only thing that most people, especially the ignorant brainiacs that are causing these problems, seem to understand.

My buddy is a advocate of "mountain justice" and enforces it where he sees fit. He was walking a skid road when he happened upon a small SUV which was covered in mud. Located in the same proximity was a wet site these mud bog enthusiasts had torn all to hell. It was a wet site which was important habitat to many critters. After surveying the situation he realized the hood of said SUV could be opened from the outside so he released and opened the hood. Reaching inside he grabbed a fist full of wires and gave a hefty tug. A bit of a walk with time to reflect upon the preservation of wet sites and the consequences of destroying habitat might have been just the thing to make these people realize the errors of their ways.

i wouldnt be surprised if your buddy gets his face slammed into the mud for being such a douchebag in the near future if thats how he acts. he could confront the people causing damage and educate them instead of being a little coward...

i guess we are kinda lucky around here when it comes to trails. you can have your pick of old rail beds, hard clay trails, or lots of mud. the muddy areas are all torn up from many years of use so us going in those mud holes will make no difference. we dont make new trails, but make the mud fly in places that are already mud holes.

as to spending a lot of money on these toys...they are made for mud. :D a pressure washer showed up at my place a week after i had my quad...straight up garden hose just didnt cut it ;)

As much as I disagree with tearing up sensitive habitat, your "buddy" committed a criminal act,and should be charged and convicted for his actions.A criminal record, and trouble traveling to foreign countries because of it,might make him realize the errors of his ways.
Then again,if I came upon someone damaging my vehicle,I might enforce some "mountain justice" of my own to teach him the errors of his ways.

He also came upon a fellow dumping his garbage in the bush. He tried to educate this person about habitat conservation and the repercussions of garbage in the bush. After being told to mind his own ####ing business he locked in his hubs and proceeded to push this guys truck into the ravine. The litter bug started to load back all the garbage and my buddy stayed around until it was all back on the truck.

Your "buddy" is very lucky that he has not been charged yet for his criminal actions. If the guy was in or on the truck, your buddy could easily be convicted of reckless endangerment.
If he is really unlucky he might find himself staring down the barrel of a gun held by someone prepared to shoot your buddy in self defense.

While on his ATV he got behind a truck which litter was thrown out of both driver and passenger windows. He collected the litter and finally the truck realized he was behind and pulled over. He stopped to educate the three persons in the truck about littering. After once again being told to #### off he walked over to his ATV and grabbed a short handled shovel he always carried. Crushing a beer can they had thrown out from the cab he walked to the tail pipe, stuck the crushed can into the tail pipe then proceeded to drive it in with the shovel handle clean to the bend. He walked up to the driver and told him that he now had some of his garbage to take home with him.
