If you guys have pics of gongs you like to wack!!! Let's see'm.
A friend of mine and I constructed a gong setup we're going to field test tomorrow early before it gets crazy hot and I'll have pics of the gongs and the damage. Calibers that are coming to the gong fest will be 338LM AI and none other then the 50BMG.

Just got back from shooting and downloaded these pics. By 10:30am the mirage was so bad we had to pack up. It was 27c. The stand worked perfect, and the steel though a little on the soft side, stood up to the punishment, barely...

These hits are from 300yds with the 338LM Ackley Improved

This spall was accomplished with 300gr SMK. It measured 5/8" deep.
Picture287.jpg

1" thick mild steel.
Picture286.jpg

The two impracts actually left marks on the back side of the 1" steel plate.
Picture284.jpg

At the same distance we used the 50BMG as a comparison. You'll be surprised.
Picture280.jpg

With a 647gr FMJ, the 50 left a 1/4" divet in the plate.
Picture283.jpg

No visible markings on the back side.
Picture285.jpg

At 375yds, we use a rock for more visible hits from further away.

If anyone is looking at putting together a gong something like this that is easily moveable, let me know.

Nice work on the stand. What dia. plate did you use. I’m in works of making my own and have 12” dia. plates at 3/4” thick for my own gong. My target distance will not exceed 500 yards...

The gongs are 18" and at 500yds with open sights with my CZ, I can't make them out. I'm glad now we went with 1" because if we use hunting ammo, which we will try the next time we're out, the added thickness will be needed.

That works too. Let us know how your welds hold up when you smoke it at closer ranges. Is that steel tempered? For others that have access to those plates, it might be a lighter way to go, like grader blade. Grader blade is rediculously hard.

I don't really shoot at them closer than 500yds as i had some bullets ziing back at me and i hear it ain't fun getting smacked by one, but at 500yds none of those welds ever came apart and they get tortured pretty hard some days.I normally pick them up along the railroad tracks. Thanks CN for the donation.
I do like your set up,though.Good job.

Brass colour hit is from a 750Gr Barnes lathe turned solids from 50Cal. Other is from ball

About 200 yrds

All of these targets look great. I like the idea of machined brass bullets. If I start cooking up bullets, you'd better believe I'll be posting some pretty interesting results. My pulse rises when I hear the word 'SPALL'. I'll have some more results from testing from next weekend. Stay tuned.

Did the early morning range thing again and this is what we came up with.
The shot of the day goes to this man. Those of you that are familiar with who he is, know him for is work. We were checking our zero at 600yds first thing this morning and a field sparrow landed on the top right corner of the target. I was spotting and saw the unsuspecting prey land. I turned you know you's attention to the new target and the rest is photos.

It wasn't his first shot of the morning and he said he had aimed for the body but he ended up clipping the back of it's neck.

I watched it flutter down infront of the target. My partner wanted to run down there and check it out but after looking through the spotting scope, I confirmed the target was not moving so we continued shooting till our guns needed to cool down. This picture is after we went down to confirm the kill. We set the bird back up on top of the target and you can actually see it through the scope on the top right corner.

From this pic, you can clearly see the 600yd target. The gongs are set up another 400yds beyond that in the field.

This is all that is left of match kings after making the 1000yd trip.

My curiousity was killing me as to how the MK and the 325gr bonded bullets would do at 100yds and this is what we gleaned from the test. The goal was to hit the plate high so that there wasn't a ton of movement.

IMG_2539.jpg

The 325gr bonded hunting bullet went about as deep as the SMK did at 300yds.
The MK dug about another 1/8" deeper then it did at 300yds to about 3/4".

All in all it was a great day that got a little gusty towards the end of our shoot but I'll take that any day over being indoors.

I guess I could have made the pics smaller but since you don't have to scroll across the picture to see the whole thing, why bother squinting to see something you don't have.

This is the guy that made the shot. The first pic didn't turn out on my original thread. The scope is a Nightforce 8-32x56mm NPR-2 ret. I've got an NPR-1 and I like it better but that's just me. We didn't try to hit it again just because since we knew after hitting it the first time where the bullet was going to go, it would have been pointless. The 1000yd gong was the one we wanted to really play with. Because of the vallies all coming together where we were shooting, there was some interesting crosswinds and after the humidity came down I was shooting 2 full MOA higher then I was first thing in the morning which was interesting but I had the gusty winds to deal with which even for a relatively fast bullet was still tough.
