Where we have the paper target set up at 600yds is actually quite steep and we've had 100% success in terms of containing the bullet lift-off. Where the gongs are at 1000yds, we purposely chose the field for two reasons. One being the tilled dirt and secondly the 3' of barley around the target. Again, if we miss the target which does happen due to wierd wind issues through the merging valleys at least we can see the dirt spray. We've also driven back for miles behind out possible danger zone and we're clear for about 6miles past the top of the ridge. We've also googled our shooting area and confirmed we're safe. As fall comes and the crops come down, it will be easier to get the target back further. Also there is a natural dirt mound back another 300-400yds we'll be looking forward to using.
As far as the best place to get steel plates, metal salvage yard would be about the best place to hunt some down. Grader blades welded together would be lighter weight. Man-hole covers would be rediculously heavy but getting your hands on what you can is also important.
