Thanks Chumlee I'm going to look for one. Any suggestions on a good 470MHz antennae?
If 470 mhz is the frequency you are going to be using the most, you will be best off with an antenna that 470 mhz is near the middle of the antennas bandwidth range. i. e. 450-500. The UV-5R is rated at 400mhz to 480mhz so 470 is near the top end but not out of the antennas range. Transmitted power usually drops off when you are near the bandwidth edges. Laird Technologies makes a wide assortment of antennas including ones with the SMF female connector the UV-5R requires. Might be worthwhile checking the local ham radio store in Edmonton to see what's available.

An important thing to consider regarding the effectiveness of the UV-5R's antenna is how they work. VHF(very high frequency) and UHF (ultra high frequency) radio signals usually travel "line of sight". If you're in a ravine, building, etc.. you won't have much range. Even heavy snowfall can reduce your effective range on VHF UHF. The higher you are the better.
The rubber ducky antennas are omni-directional and a compromise at the best. If you really want to get the most out of your 5 watts it might be fun to build or buy a small yagi beam antenna. Then you can control the directivity of your signal.(like a TV antenna but smaller.) There's lots of plans on the Internet using commonly available materials.

At this rate, we are going to soon need a Ham Radio Section on GunNutz.

Lots of good information to share.

That would be interesting, but there are soooo many Ham Forums on the internet now.

CanAm,

Are those guaranteed genuine Nagoya NA-771 antennas?

I only ask because the market is completely flooded with counterfeit Nagoyas. The only place that I could find that is an official Nagoya reseller is https://baofengtech.com

If you can guarantee the authenticity, I'll buy 3 of them as soon as you have them in stock.

These are the same people I bought my 771s from...just off their Amazon side. By luck. Reviews are 4.5/5,, so hoping they're legit.

Most rubber duck antennas that come with the radio I consider a dummy load at best. Upgrading the antenna is a good start or adding to the counterpoise will work some as well. A good folding yagi is the tape measure yagi for single band. Easy to build and effective as well.

Thanks for the tip Shadow. I forgot the FRS is in the 460-470 range. I can't seem to find the 400-470MHz ones on amazon Canada, only the 430Mhz variety. Do you have any personal experience with them?

Yes, I have tested mine to 10km, very clear, menu is little confusing but once you get used to it not so bad. All my camp now has same units.

Weird, I ordered & paid on the 4th, shipped on the 6th....Canpar didn't deliver until the 11th.

I'm happy with Canada Ammo...Canpar not so much. Tracking said the package was out for delivery on the 7th...they never even attempted to deliver.

Ammo in your shipment ? that's why canpar ?
I had no ammo or firearm in my shipment just radios & accessories should be shipped Can Post
But still no shipping notice

Mine was just radios and accessories, and it's coming by Canpar. Hopefully tomorrow.

Same here, Canpar delivery notice received today October 12. At least they are using a local variety store for the pickup instead of the Canpar depot.
