Buy what you really want, no point in building a pseudo Timberwolf(or whatever) to save a few hundred bucks.

If you have the money to play at this level... resale I don't believe is a big issue. For me its all about passing them down to my son. Hes four... So I have lots of time to play before that happens! :D we all know how this works... one turns in to 20 and IF your single 20 turns into ALL of them... Hell I have 3 on order and 2 in the mail... :dancingbanana:

I agree, however my point was that if you were forced to trade or sell your factory made rifle your attentive audience would be larger with a factory rifle than that of a custom.

Does that make since? Hell NO, but that’s the way it works in my business and many/all others.

People will favour something they are more comfortable with, not necessarily because it’s a better product.

I agree Matt.

I have a brand new custom built 404 Jeffery with new Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4x24 with illuminated FD7 dot reticle back in SA that I'm trying to sell. The rifle (there) cost me $7000 to build with all the fancy checkering and really fancy engraving, and the scope was another $2000 there plus mounts plus reloading stuff.... So around $8800 worth of brand new kit.

I am trying to sell it ALL for only $5000, and in 4 months, nobody has even remotely been interested. This while a factory rifle WAYYYY less nice, easily sells for more than that.

Bummer.

You could also use having this as an excuse for an Alaskan Bear hunt!
 
As far as 338LM go, when you take your standard 338LM out of the case and plop it down beside a 338LM AI and you guys are both shooting at the same target at 1230yds, both hitting it all is good, until like my friend did, we made the trip to the target to check hits and repaint it. His 300gr SMK bullets were denting the 3/8" plate and my 300gr SMK were still pounding through the steel at that distance. Although he still likes his DSR-1 that cost him $20,000 with case, glass etc. he wants to rebarrel his gun now because that bit of difference makes all the difference. Be patient. What you wish for is on it's way and it will always put a smile on your face once you take delivery.

As for locations to shoot 50cal, you just haven't started hang'n out with the right people yet. We have places to shoot in Alberta that will make you love living here.

Sorry but it's more about knowing what's out there and making an educated decision while putting a build together. The 338LM has been out now long enough to know that it was originally designed with a 250gr bullet in mind. When the 300gr bullets came out, the standard casing struggled to push them as fast as the 250s so to bring the velocity back up to where it's the most productive, AIing the casing is the next step for many reasons. As Rick mentioned, brass life, was a big advantage as well as velocity and increased damage at distance.
 
I will be trying the .338LM AI when my rifle requires a re-barrel.
I agree with increased damage at distance and velocity but if you anneal your brass the life you get with the brass is great!

Sure you have to anneal but if your in this fourm for percision rifles you know it make a difference down range, and its an easy step to tighten up that group!
 
Thanks to everyone that replied, and to the guys that sent pm's and the ones who invited me to call them - I really appreciate it.

So, here's the verdict... :)

I took a 180 degree turn, and decided (for now) not to get a 338 Lapua, and ordered a LRT-3 50 BMG from Ross at PGW.

I'll probably get it early next week, and I'm like a little boy now - can't wait for it.

I will let you know how it goes, once I have it.

I'd go get yourself 50lbs of 20N29 and 500 750gr A-Max's, some gun shops take car/house trade ins for supplies.

We can compare cost to reload once you've gotten your gun but since ATRS has the press, brass, powder and all the rest, I'm think'n you're best deal is gonna be local. Welcome to the family!!!
 
A 338LM AI will go through 3/8" steel at 1200 yards? I have never been interested in the big Chamberings, but this sounds interesting.
 
Matt, all yours and Darren's fault. Hehehe. Once I looked at that LRT-3 in the Cadex chassis, I was hooked. :):)
