BCL MRX Bison Bolt Action .223 - or 5.56

barrel blanks are cheaper and/or more available in 5.56 maybe?

I think they are making their own barrels but maybe they are finishing bulk blanks..... cost difference would be fairly minimal.

Hopefully we will see more options down the road including .308

So I popped into Tenda today to fondle a couple rifles I am looking at, this in 300Blk and a Sig Cross in .308.
The Bison is gorgeous. Even all bad I have read about BCL's past with QC I am absolutely picking one of these up when 300Blk version starts shipping, that is if I can wait that long and don't grab a .556.

If the price tags had been reversed, as in Bison was $2200 and Cross was $999 it would have made more sense. Finish and feel on the Bison was nicer.
The stock on the SIG felt clunky in the LOP and Comb adjustments. The Bolt on the MRX was smoother and the trigger was awesome as expected.

The SIG also had a pot metal feel to it, which it may be to keep weight low.
In all honesty I had a lowered expectation for the SIG going in after bad experience with their air rifles. To me the Cross had a similar feel and finish.
i did prefer the fit for myself on the SIG but they are different rifles in that regard.
Basically if they were the same cost I would probably still choose the Bison.

So, North Silva get some orders in to BLC for 300Blk, so many guys want them and by the sounds of things BCL will not start a run without an order for them.

The bison is definitely nice. I've been extremely happy with mine and would definitely buy again. I'm thinking it would make a convenient compact deer rifle, even considering using for short range deer hunting. I had always considered 5.56 on the small side for hunting, but seeing how many of our neighbors to the south use it for deer I'm intrigued.

I will probably get flamed for this but I will say it anyway. Although the general opinion is that 223 is not humane to use on deer, I disagree. The last deer I shot was a medium sized doe and I took it with a Tikka T3 in 223 at 80m. The bullet was a reloaded cartridge using 65gr Sierra Game Kings. Just want to say I had no doubt that I would drop that deer. Bullet placement and bullet design means much more than power. Go ahead and do it so long as it is legal where you are. Here in NB it just needs to be center fire.

Cheers

Thanks, the more I read, the more I agree. I see the regs allow it, and and see many articles regarding good ammunition choices for deer so it seems perfectly reasonable to me, but I too am very particular about shot placement and don't take the shots I'm not sure I can make.

Most people don't know what the eff they are talking about when it comes to .223 for deer hunting. Use a good bullet designed for deer hunting and it will kill reliably within reasonable hunting distances. It's not the cartridge to use for long range hunting but most game is shot within 200 meters anyway.

I had to go see what all the fuss was about.
After fondling one I decided to bring home the 12.5" version.
Mounted a Bushnell 1-4 #4 German reticle with low rings and got a perfect (for me) cheek-weld. Also, swapped out the grip and butt-stock (thanks to the OIC that freed up some parts).
It's got a decent trigger so looking forward to blasting a few rounds out of this shorty....

johNTO, nice set up. My initial scope on my Bison was a Nikon P Tactical 1.5-4.5 x 20 with fairly large turrets mounted on medium rings. The windage turret was taking a beating and contributing to failures to eject. I had to rethink my approach and went with an Athlon 1-8 x 24 in 2 piece AR mount and a 3/4 in cheek riser.

After disassembling and cleaning the bolt and scrubbing the chamber I have eliminated most of the failures to eject. Still not 100% but it would appear the bolt has to be worked with authority to function properly.

Getting around 3 MOA with 75 grain Hornady with my current setup.

Bulriver.....thanks for the head's up. I won't be a pussy with the bolt:)

Anyone confirm if the BCL 20rnds are legit for sale? I couldn't find them on the BCL website nor any of the Sponsors.

Not available yet.

I also got bad groups with the Hornady 75. 55s seem to work well In mine so far but I'm curious what heavier bullet handloads will get.

That would be funny but also sad if true that retailers have not placed orders on behalf of their customers for 300blk

Driller212....thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I only have a bunch of 62gr ammo. Most of my shooting is done at the 100yrd range (hence the 1-4x). I'm not expecting a tack driver. Just a fun range toy.

Btw....nice review /vid on YouTube!

To anyone who owns one of the Bisons - what's it like shouldering a 2x4? Functionally and aesthetically this looks like whoever designed it has no concept of either, and as if they were only aiming for cost... except it's still over-priced coming from a company who's known for producing sub-par product!.. I recognize this sounds harsh.. but to those who own it, do you genuinely like it or is a stop-gap until something better comes along?

The flat hand guard was strange at first but mines a range toy and will be shot off a rest/bi-pod.
The 2x4 comparison is lame but then again I enjoy shooting my Glock and heard this comparison for years:)
Aesthetically it appeals to me and one of the main reasons why I buy what I buy. To each their own.
I can't speak to Function as I haven't shot mine yet but the Triggertech Remington 700 Primary Trigger is very nice imo.
Stop-gap? Not likely. It's already seeing some of my AR parts and I can use the stash of mags/ammo that's been collecting dust.
