be honest...remington 770 ???

Rem 770?

No, thanks..... :slap:

Make my "entry level" rifle a Stevens 200 or Savage package rifle.

NAA.

I say get a Savage Edge Package, Similar Price but twice the gun, I love my new Savage in .223 it shoots really well and functions perfectly for me.

Currently own a 770 sent in an email today to remington to get it fixed, now only 4 months old with 3.5 boxes run through it. Admittedly a great gun, shoots deadly accurate (I mean well sighted in).Was a cheap option for me at the time, kicking myself now. Used it this season treated her well after about the second box of ammo it stopped ejecting rounds!!!! wait what?!?! yes literally stopped ejecting rounds.

So here I am nice 2 point Mule deer 150 yds out, (300 win mag model 770 BTW) Standing, load round, fire, neck shot deer is down, he pops back up I go to load a second round and the bolt WILL NOT open, I can turn the bolt up and down it will not draw back to open the chamber, in frustration I set the butt on the ground slam the bolt with my fist and it pops open load a second round and the deer has already fallen over!

Ok ill try different ammo, Winchester Super X, Federal PowerShok, CoreLok, Barnes, same issue over and over and over maybe out of 10 shots fired 2 eject correctly.

So now that I have said my frustration you can decide what you would like to do with that information. On another note, if anyone has suggestions of things I can check prior to going through the hassle of sending this gun out please let me know.

...It is like I said my first rifle so would it even matter for the first year or two?

If you're planning to get out fairly often then I think you'd be surprised how quickly you can learn to out-shoot a crappy rifle. Time will vary for each, but it's not unusual for a shooter to want a more accurate rifle during their first season.

Additionally, having proper feedback from your rifle is one of the most (if not the most) important factors for improving your shooting technique. If you spend all your time fiddling with jams and inaccuracy, you'll likely find it difficult to progress.

For these reasons, I recommend buying the most accurate rifle you can possibly afford - you'll thank yourself in August.

I haven't owned a 770, but did buy a 710 .30-06 just before they were stopped in production. (Camo model). I have also owned 700's, browning bars among other rifles. Now..the 710 (same as 770), could not, and will never compare to those class rifles, let alone the stevens, savage, etc.. I don't know if I'm the only one in the world to have lucked into a "decent" 710, But mine doesn't make me want to sell it.

It was and still is my back-up gun, or for bad weather hunting. The barrel is not even free-floated, yet it will always shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards all day long!!! Yes, the bolt isn't the smoothest in the world, but mines not as bad as others claim..and it doesn't come out or actually bind up on me. The trigger isn't world class, but mine sure damn breaks like glass..lightest pull on any of my rifles!!! The factory installed scope was junk, but thats been replaced. It doesn't have any feeding issues whatsoever, although it don't "flick" the casings out, just kinda topples them over. It fits me very well, points and handles quite good. And I'm not being one bit sarcastic!!! my 710 is more accurate than any other rifle I've ever owned..And it's completely stock, besides the scope and rings..So..in my opinion..I lucked out:D..Sorry to everyone else..but my rifle must have been built on a day when the workers got a bonus or something..:D

Pretty much the same for my 770 .308

I'd like to know how many of the people that are the doomsayers of the 770 have ever owned or even shot one. I've shot three that belonged to friends and while not as finely finished as most they all shot fine. Accurate at 100 yards and weather proof. A little attention to some details and I think the action could be straightened up.Not everyone can afford to spend a lot on a finely finished rifle but still want to hunt.

This doomsayer here has owned one. It was garbage. I got rid of it at a considerable loss and don't regret it one bit. Maybe Remington does make good 770's but i sure have never seen one.

OP: Check out what TradeEx has to offer. They sell nice rifles at a very good price.

I have handled a few 710s and 770s,and fired a couple of them, and I was not at all impressed. The action was so rough that I had to take the rifle from my shoulder to cycle the bolt. The trigger was creepy as well as heavy, and the fit and finish was very poor.I would much rather have a Stevens for the same money.
