Beater rifles that just plain work well.

Still got the Marlin X7 then, Lad. I expected you would move it along in your endless quest for the perfect rifle. :) My daughter and I still have ours and we feel it's just one of those rifles that should be resurrected and made available again...

It is still alive mostly, the Rem 783. Very little was changed from the X7 to the 783.

Ol’ Timer 30-30 Win. To tell the tale.

I am adding a post suggested by “Why not?” This is my Ol’ Timer beater that just plane works for me. I inherited it from my in-laws from Ontario. It needed new sites. The old ones were scarred and tattered. If only this gun could speak, I’m sure it would tell the tale!

Thanks Ted for helping me post my picture.

Reference to the old .303 Brit post~

I had one just like this and I gave it to my brother in-law. He lent it to his buddy. The guy forgot to buy shells and realized he only had one left, saw a moose and decided to take aim. Nothing like meat in the pot! Great gun. My uncle in-law was teasing me that I gave his nephew an ugly gun! That was funny! Like I heard an old heavy equipment operator say once, "It doesn't matter what it looks like just as long as it gets the job done!"

THIS ONE IS A LOT BETTER LOOKING THAN THE ONE I GAVE AWAY. I will try to get him to send me the pic and we could do the comparison. ;)

Thanks for post!

ha ha! apologies mate i didnt see this post until just now-

I sure do still have the Marlin X7, it was up for Sale prior to moving to New Zealand however no one was keen on it---i think i even had it priced with the vx2 x50 leupold scope on it !!

So that was a Suprise for sure, however No one wanted the T3 9.3x62 either..... they are a big calibre back home and i think magnumitis and huge bore diameters are slowly fading out!! which is what i preech a little of so no worries there!

IF that X7 was a .270 winchester I would of bought it over to NZ without a Doubt- however the majority of animals i am hunting here are small Goats / small deer with the exception that i run into a Proper Red Stag.... unlikely..
I left that good ol Kimber montana (7-08) back home for this Trip and 3 months in I dont regret that just yet as the Mossberg is doing it job and there is potentially a Chance to bring the Montana back around April - so as to use it as its intended purpose, "goat/sheep rifle" .. cant say the Mossberg is tooo heavy though, certainly not Howa heavy etc... the Zeiss ontop is likely adding a few extra weight if anything..

The endless quest for the perfect rifle has well an truely come to a stand still with my money goin into this NZ expedition however i do hope to lose 1 or 2 in coming months (above mentioned 9.3 /3006) and if the Kimber comes across the ditch then i'll move off my MP 270 aswell!
however those exceptions start to creep back in... :D

from here on in i will be back to hunt specifically on various trips back to NZ in future an that will be easier to bring a home rifle- keeping in mind i didnt arm myself for a good 2 months from being here as storage was an issue for me.

Enjoy that gun mate! I absolutly feel you on that last comment- It just does what its intended to do, no fuss. its boring but i like it.

cheers
WL

WhelenLad,

Been laid up here on the couch with the flu so haven't been in a very communicative mood of late. Anyway, sounds like you are having too much fun no matter the rifle you have in hand. :)

Hiltzy clued me in to what the 783 is all about, as I was unaware of the time line there. Seems like it may well be the 'new' X7. I have not seen or held a 783 to date, but it may well warrant some investigative effort. As for old Husqvarna M-98s, I recently picked up a very nice one in 8mm Mauser and it is truly a superb piece for under $350. :)

I dont have a picture but my friend uses a beat up Rem788 .222 that has minimal bluing and stock finish left on it. It has been his groundhog gun since he was 12 so about 25 years now. Hes still shots a lot of coyotes with it so he feels no need to change. I make him clean the rifle once a year because it's usually dirty from carrying it in the combine, He has had it fire taking the safety off before from being dirty.

Those things shoot! Had quite a few of them, and all were very accurate. One I had rechambered to 223 Ackley Imp would send 40 gr Ballistic Tips out the muzzle at 4000 fps, and put them all into 3/4" all day long.

One of our CGN bros has it now,
Ted

Savage package rifle FXCP pre-accutrigger with the mag release button on the right side. Great shooter, no problems. Loaned to Brother in law... still waiting for it back.

Another beater that really performs! Originally Rem 721 in 30-06 with factory sights, it was rechambered to 308 Norma Mag, I think by Charlie Peeling.

I installed an ancient Pecar-Berlin 4X scope that is of the same time period as the rifle. The scope is the beater part, and testifies to a lot of hard travel and hunting trips, but the optics are as bright and clear as many high-end scopes today.

The Paul Jaeger side mount detaches and re-installs still sighted in perfectly every time.

It also has a steel Lyman receiver sight that can be used if necessary.

Perhaps, in the opinion of many, not much to look at, this outfit will be dead on every time I take it to the range with 180 gr Partitions loaded to well over 3000 fps, and is a great hunting rifle.

Ted
