BEAUTIFUL SKS's !!

And heres my latest build, I cut the sight protector down as the top of it was in my FOV with the rear peep and it was hard to get a consistent sight picture.

The only thing it needs now is a sling and some quality time with my stash of ammo.

aaaaaand another photobump!

I keep looking at this one every time this thread gets a new post. Mind if I ask what you used for stain? I have a Chinese SKS that I never shoot because I can't stand the looks of the thing with its stock like a varnished 2x4.

My feeling is that we in the SKS Modder's community approach Comrade Simonov's design the way my wife and I approached our first house: we appreciated most of the things about it, but even more, we appreciated the possibilities for improvement that it offered.

What i dislike most about SKS purists is not that they have a slavish devotion to an antiquated design (fixed magazines? so the soldiers wouldn't lose them?), or even that they treat a weapon, a finely engineered tool of mastery and personal power, as though it were a simple collectible commodity like a stamp, or an old coin; it is that they have no appreciation for anyone who doesn't see things their way.

I am capable of recognizing the beauty in a stock SKS, and respecting that someone might wish to own many different examples of this fine weapon. Why does the respect not flow both ways?

Seems my build is well recieved. Too bad that other guy can't handle it lol. The stock is a Russian with the original shellac, I haven't refinished it. I just bedded my Chinese SKS into it cos its noticeably lighter than the Chinese catalpa stock. There was a thread just recently where another member refinished a Chinese with some nice dark stains. It turned out really good!

That is a very nice build Supernova, and you did get a great colour on the stock !!

Thanks Coho, I thought it would be right at home in this thread. But I can't take credit for the stock, credit goes to the Russian worker who shellac'd it way back in '54! I nabbed it off a buddy in exchange for threading his SKS and buying a slant comp for it, the same as mine. It is a beauty though :)

It's not quite bog standard military, and not quite a sporter, but something in between that looks pretty slick. Understated, is the word.

I'll dig into the search function and see what I can find. I was pondering aftermarket for a stock, but I'm really a wood guy at heart. Plastic just lacks warmth and character (so does Chinese wood).

The catalpa can be fairly nice when smoothed out and stained but its no fancy wood that's for sure. The roughed out and varnish dipped finish on most is pretty atrocious to say the least lol. I think for aftermarket you have Russian surplus either arctic birch or arctic birch laminate, or Tapco's offerings in a sporter style. I really liked the lime green Tapco Timbersmith in this thread. The zombie stuff isn't my thing but the stock looked good. I wouldn't mind a Russian laminate stained cherry red like a Romanian AK.

Lol what a clown. Time for your meds and a nap old timer, this thread is too much for you.

I hope that's for Mr. Williams there friend because I ended the joke I posted with:
"Everytime I read it, I laugh. For the record, I believe you can do as you'd wish with your gun."
Aslo, for the additional record, I have both a Tapco'd and a stock sks.

The stock my type 56 came with had damage from the crate. I just refinshed it and BANG, beauty.

Whomever complains about refinishing or Tapcoing an SKS is entititled to his opinion, but I think this rifle was built 60 years ago and nothing wrong with refinishing or giving it a tapco stock. Actually, no matter what any purist says, a Tapco stock makes the SKS more comfortable and gives it better ergonomics than that stock leprecaun sized stock...

I had a Tapco stock on my first SKS and I will probably eventually put one on my current SKS. Then I will get a second one and put a Timbersmith stock...I like my guns the WAY I LIKED THEM and comfort is key in shooting well...

Yeah that had nothing to do with what you posted. I've seen that one before and it makes me laugh every time. I was referring to the whiney punks who can't handle anything other than the smell of their own ass.

I couldn't care less what others think. You've already been told that. You know why people don't like you so don't play games. If you act like a punk you get treated like a punk. You don't understand that and can't see past your own opinion so why should I waste my time on you? Lol

I replied to a post by Mermaniel a couple of posts back ( as yet unanswered ) but it applies to you equally.......

....What others think is obviously important to you otherwise you would not feel the need to try and justify yourself.

My question to you is why do you care about what others think ?

I dont really care what others think. Especially not an internet troll. Just wanted to share my thoughts. If the sks was so perfect, it would not have been replaced by the Ak variants just few years after it creation... Mr Williams, I respect your opinion but I dont repspect the way you share them. My parents thought me manners and respect. Maybe you should go back to the milsurp section, Im sure many people would share your opinions and it would.spare us from your negative attitude.

Many of us share your exact opinion.
