Seems there are a number of CGNers with this cool shotgun. Go figure, I originally wanted a Stoeger M3K but couldn't find 'em in stock for the longest while and read too many mixed reviews on the JM Pro. I figured I'd splurged for my b'day and it came down to a VersaMax Tac or Sportsman and a Beretta 1301 Comp. After doing the math, to get the VM tuned up to 3Gun ready, it would cost me a fair chunk over the 1301. In the end, the 1301 won out. :)

Here's my upgrades:

Nordic Components +5 kit came in from TacOrd. I also got the barrel clamp but haven't installed it as yet. Still undecided if I want to install it.

Used a 3/8" aluminum rod cut to 12 3/8" (calculated length) for a NC +5 mag tube and used a 3/8N24 die to thread one end of the rod. Used a 1/8"x1" flat aluminum, found the center, scribed the diameter of the NC end cap on it then drilled out the center and tapped it with a 3/8N24. Rounded out the flat piece of AL on the disc sander until it fit in the NC end cap. I test fitted the plug in the shotgun and the stock spring binded up pretty badly and had to unkink parts of the spring. Turns out by tapping/threading it by free hand, the rod was off by a hair from being perfectly perpendicular with the base but easily fixed later.

I then used JB Weld to permanently attach the AL rod to the base. Once hardened, the base was flattened on the disc sander and the open end rounded to a dull point so that it wouldn't catch the mag spring. Using a Dremel, I roughed up the inner finish of the NC end cap then JB Weld the rod assembly to the end cap. The extension tube was carfully screwed onto the end cap and another circular shim with a 3/8" hole drilled through it was used to center the rod to the tube. The whole assembly was left overnight to cure before being tested on the shotgun. All worked 100% and no binding so I placed a dab of epoxy on the end cap threads and screwed it onto the extension tube so that it hopefully can't be considered "easily converted" to more than 5rnds of 3" shells. If that doesn't I can always drill a small hole through the end cap/tube and rivet them together.

I really hated the cheap, hollow sounding butt stock on this shotgun so I decided to fill it with foam. I originally had it all taped up and ready to spray foam (low expanding blue can version of Great Stuff Windows & Doors) but was afraid I might frack it up royally and accidentally crack or bow my stock. I saw one video of a guy who used large plastic tube to accept the expanding foam instead of it blowing out the stock then I saw the spare pieces of plank foam I had kicking around and the lightbulb went on.

I removed the butt pad with a hollow ground Philips screwdriver then removed the butt stock from the receiver using a #13 socket on the bolt securing it.

To remove the inner stock assembly from the butt stock, I removed the rubber cap covering the QD sling mount (yeah, big surprise there 'cause it's not mentioned in the manual) then used a Torx #40 bit to unscrew the QD socket.

I changed out the pitch shim to 65SX (SX for lefties, DX for righties) and slipped it back onto the receiver. Using some old plank foam I had kicking around I roughly shaped it to fit slightly bigger than the crevice and stuffed it into the stock around the bolt stem (lack of technical name).

On the inner stock module, I used a 3/8" aluminum pipe, which is slightly smaller than a 3/8" copper pipe in diameter, to cut a hole through a block of plank foam so the receiver bolt can slip through before inserting it into the empty space above the appropriate cast plate ie 65SX for me. It's a bit tricky trying to get everything all lined up but it's doable.

Reassembled the butt stock by locking in the inner stock module with the QD mount screw then secured the butt stock back onto the receiver with the #13 bolt and washer being careful not to overtighten the nut or bad things would probably happen. Reattached the recoil pad and swapped out the factory IC choke for a Carlson's extended LM choke and she's done, all ready for 3Gun 'cept for installing a Matchsaverz.

Only future mods may be slightly widening/rounding out the loading port area and having the lifter welded. :)

If anyone installed a Matchsaverz on your 1301, I've love to hear/see how you installed it on the handguard.

Very nice, thanks for posting. I might do the foam thing in my stock as well, although I am waiting for that Magpul SGA stock adapter to be released to replace the original stock.

Why the +5 are you planning to compete in the US or just for esthetics?

Huh, that Magpul SGA stock adapter is news to me. I'll have to keep my eye open for 'em.

Nah, the +5 tube was 95% mostly for esthetics and partially for protecting the muzzle when/if I get into 3Gun and have to do a barrel/box dump to transition over to rifle or handgun.

I did order that Tau anti-mag dump adapter for the bolt release even though after doing a bit of dry fire drills, I've yet to accidentally do a mag dump.

Got my TAU yesterday and now installed. After my last range session, I wasn't overly concerned with accidentally depressing the bolt release button to the back and causing a jam. Not once did I hit the back of the button but I wasn't under any pressure situation ie tournament etc. BUT I ordered one anyway. Nice thing about it is that I can still release rounds to unload the tube, just need a little more effort to do so.

Haven't gotten around to installing the Matchsaverz as yet. Maybe later today. Did anyone add one to their 1301 and care to share a pic?

Got around to installing the Matchsaverz today. It was nerve wrecking drilling a hole and hoping I didn't frack up on picking the right location. Took about 45mins or finesse Dremel work to open up the stock by the hole to accomodate the Chicago nut. Had to knock off two side of the nut as well so it wouldn't touch the action bar or rub against the barrel. A couple test runs afer assembly and it works.

Just need a welded lifter and I'm done.

Looks good. Have you caught your finger under the lifter yet? I have tried to catch mine and never have. YET! Going to be going it without untill I do catch one.

At first I wasn't catching my finger if I use strong hand quad loading. If I use weak hand, as I'm a lefty rifle shooter, I have caught my thumb on occasion. If I'm loading singles, I've not caught my thumb, weak or strong handed. I'll probably do like you and run it as is and if I find myself catching my thumb more frequently than I'd like, then I'll look into getting a welded lifter. TacOrd is busy till fall they said so that helps.

I knocked more off the Chicago nut and basically turned it into a tee nut and put the hole into the slot.
So it sits a little lower than yours and is slightly angled to the port.
It clears everything and works great.
I also used a heat gun to relax the matchsaver so it's easier to use (put a deep socket just under the diameter of a shell in it when heating/cooling it).
I know what you mean about it being stressful though...nothing like taking a drill to you new expensive toy, lol.

That installation spot did cross my mind but wasn't sure 'cause I couldn't find any pics of it being there for anyone. Heck, I only found two pics of a 1301 with a matchsaverz mounted on internet, CGN and Brianenos forum, and both were on the top. Guess there's more than one way to skin a cat. :)

I'm tempted to install a Limsaver recoil pad on mine but still undecided. After shooting a box full of buckshot and a half box of slugs, I didn't have any shoulder kisses, just a little sore, unlike my old pump gun. I figured trap loads should be much easier on the shoulder.

Comp 1301 21" on the way, tag for interest.

Congrats! You won't be disappointed! :)

Tac ord did the work on my Beretta

That looks good! Too bad Beretta put the stupid serial no. that low to the loading port. I'm going to have TacOrd weld my lifter iffy I find my thumb getting caught up in it or might try that other option of chopping off a corner of it.

How much did the mods run ya if you don't mind me ask'n?

Congrats. You'll love it. It shares some similarlities with the A400. Depending on the size of your finger, if you're doing quad loading for example, you can get your thumb pinched/caught. As JuanCarlos mentioned earlier, the alternative option is the Vezzoli mod which requires you to chop off a corner of the lifter.

Here's JuanCarlos' pic of the Vezzoli mod:

i can defiantly see how this would help. I have gotten my fingers pinched trying to quickly load some 3.5 mags in while duck hunting. Might have to look at doing this with my other Beretta's. Thanks for the information

It's an easy mod but I'll warn you, don't clamp the lifter in a vice with too much pressure, it may warp the shape. This is what I did originally and it took me longer to straighten it then to do the mod. I initially used a file and moved to a dremel with a hard stone. If I could do it again I would do a nice light clamp and then only use the dremel. It would have easily taken the same amount of time or less.
