Best 338 Lapua for the money

Custom rifles are great, but hold no resale value.
May I suggest Desert Tech SRS A1 in .338lm and .308. Also other quick change calibers and length of barrel available all sub moa.
They are a dream to shoot and way more manageable to bring out to the field being a bullpup.

Actually I disagree to some extent that guns, like my MRAD, aren't quite accurate. Mine shoots like a laser, and the trigger in it is fabulous. I read and researched for several months and looked at lots of different options. Then if you figure that the cost of the .308 barrel is a third of the cost of a new high end gun.....plus you only have to buy one high end scope. I put a Nightforce on mine and didn't have to buy 2-3 scopes for different guns. If you figure in scopes, rings, etc, the switch caliber guns become much more affordable. Ordered a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel thru Wolverine that should be here any day now, so have 500-1800 yards covered between those 3 calibers, and is very nice to pack up only one drag bag to go shoot all day. Plus there are very few of us that can easily find somewhere to shoot longer then a mile.
Not disputing at all though that some of the custom built guns are a bit more accurate, but are they any more affordable? My researching and phone calls to a bunch of different shops and vendors didn't seem to bare that out.
I do love that there are lots of high end .338 rifle options though and it'd be boring if we all picked the same gun. Some guys who have fired my Barrett said it was the nicest gun they've ever fired, and a couple guys were like meh, no biggie at all, so each to his own. Seriously no real wrong answer here with most of the guns being discussed here. My opinion is that you can't really go wrong with any of them.

I agree that they are accurate, really accurate, but it seems that you and I both agree that they're not the MOST accurate. They're also tough, and modular, and lighter, than a dedicated civilian LR rifle - so there are ups and down. The price is a pretty big down.....esp with the dollar right now.....

Your points about the multiple barrels, and only one scope, are good. I like hitting steel more than making tiny groups on paper, so maybe I should re-look at the MRAD for future? I love my REC7, it's just "tight". I try not to be a cheerleader for brands, but I am proud to own a Barrett.

IF a fella actually shoots, and I mean enough to get very proficient with the rifle, he will end up spending far more money on components than he ever will on the purchase price. So I certainly don't see the point in buying a cheap, or less expensive 338 Lapua.

I agree with that statement for sure, that cost of owning, and actually using a .338 quickly outpaces the one time cost of the gun. When I factor in all my reloading costs and time for my 338, I could've bought a whole complete second gun, lol. But it depends on where you get the most enjoyment from with the 338s and how you use them? I really enjoy the reloading aspect and playing with loads and chasing an accuracy level, just for fun. I know several shooting buddies that own 338s and never shoot them though. It seems that they bought one just to round out their collection but never take them out of the safe.
I also stand by my feeling that whether you buy a Barrett/Cadex/Blauser type factory gun, or get a more custom 338, the accuracy differences for what i ask my 338 to do, would be hard to notice, especially when I can reload specifically for my rifle and tune my loads. If accuracy is your only concern, and you don't plan to ever reload, then I say choose that best gun that shoots factory 4$ rounds. All my guns, and calibers, shoot better with handholds, but lots of people aren't planning to go that route. Don't make the mistake or assumption that because my MRAD shoots very accurate with my handholds, yours will do the same with factory ammo.

Long range precision is what I'm after. I am starting to out grow my .308 and would like to keep pushing myself. I've been reloading for my .308 for a long time so reloading for 338 would be no problem, I'm also considering selling my .308 and getting an mrad so I can swap barrels to .308, .300, and 338 lm, only problem is I'm somewhat attached to my .308, so i guess my question is, would I be better to go all out and get an mrad, or another rifle?

Have a look at what is happening in the FTR scene... I doubt you have run out of ways to utilise your 308. maybe a new barrel is all you need to supersize your 308?

If you want a boomer, by all means. Been there, done several of them... lots of fun.

Assume you aren't talking distances beyond 1000/1200yds? There are so many options today that are superbly accurate.

So decide what does LR precision mean to you then have a look at what is being done in 1000yd BR and F class. Lots and lots of awesome options.

I would suggest the same

savage 111/11 long range hunter

Its accurate as all hell, its "light" for a .338, but kicks less then the average .308 due to a well designed break and recoil pad.

Can be used for some target, but be packed for hunting (its my sheep gun)

the two "brass" hits near the upper right hand corner of the white square... that's 2 shots at 300 meters with the LRH

Nice, thx.

Any others in Canada that you know of??

The SRS has recently become an object of my desire.... 6.5x47 and .338, and I could sell 2 rifles and scopes..... I wish I'd known about it 2 years ago!!!

Who retails the desert tech's in Canada??

-J.
I called desert tech and it just goes to voicemail, emails not returned either.

Dlask Arms has carried DTA in the past, not sure if they do now.

After TSE lost their distributorship years ago a new distributor was to be announced, however I have not seen anything posted as to who it is. I heard blueline a while ago, but have no idea.

Kind of annoying since I would like to get pricing on some accessories.

It's $200 per firearm that it imported from a third party and a flat rate of $25 shipping. To me thats pretty reasonable, it's the current exchange rate that is holding me back.
I don't need the rifle, just accessories and it is the same fee for each piece they import for you from a third party
