Best 'bang for buck" AR?

Wolverine had some sweet deals on the DDs, and yeah, as someone mentioned earlier, with the CAD $$ going to rat$hit, deals from IRG aren't as awesome as they were last summer (they've got an LE6920 on for $999 right now, think it's the cerekoted FDE one with all FDE Magpul furniture?).

Expensive for what you get.

There are just too many choices...I want a short barrel traditional look and sights with a solid stock...so this Bushmaster A3 with 11.5 barrel fit the bill:

Just add this stock:

So traditional looking but the removable carry handle allows mounting of a red dot or scope down the line and it has similar ergo to my Fabarm Martial Pro Forces...

I am looking to wade into the AR realm for the first time...I am looking at a Bushmaster...seems the best route for me to start with.

The Bushmaster is a lot of rifle for the money, this one an AR-10, cost just north of 1250.0 all in, without the optic... JP.

+1 DD is a great name and for a reason. That paired with the sales Wolverine cycles you can't go wrong.
Building is fun too, but let's be honest... Your first AR won't be your last.

For the money, DD is a better value. In my opinion. The other top contender for in my books is "The Jack" carbine by BCM.

Knight's Armament.

With it you get:

- 2 stage match trigger (included)
- Back up sights (included)
- Ambi mag release (included)
- Ambi bolt catch (included)
- Enhanced charging handle (included)
- LMT SOPMOD Stock (included)
- Push Button sling mounts - front and back (included)
- Hammer forged chrome lined barrel (included)
- lifetime warranty (included)

If you're going to add a new trigger, stock, back up sights, sling mounts, a new charging handle, or any ambi parts, then consider that as part of the cost of a different rifle.

The OP wants to get into the AR game, so why spend a fortune on something like a KAC or Noveske (or any other really high-end AR)? If he's got the spare cash, that's great (and can he send some my way???:d:d ).

For my money, his best bet would be a basic 14.5" bbl Norinco with a Burris PEPR scope mount and scope of choice. Add in a decent trigger (mine has an ALG) and it runs like the Energizer bunny, all for well under $1000.

Despite what some people say, Norc AR's are decent-quality rifles that shoot well and last a long time. They can also be picked up for crazy LOW prices occasionally, AND can be resold for damned near the purchase price if/when you choose to upgrade, or want a different configuration.

Lots of food for thought in this thread. Thanks to all who have shared their opinions so far. I'm still kicking myself for missing out on the DD deals that were around last year.... :p

Paul,

I hope you don't mind me using your first name, but you posted. May I ask what your use case is?

No one seems to have asked this so far. And the only reason I bring it up is what I understood your definition of best bang for the buck, it is not a working AR for the least amount of dollars.

Reason I ask this is if your ideal AR is a long ranger precision AR, then there is no argument about about - you sir are looking for an SR25.

On the other hand if its medium range rifle you are craving then as mentioned there are multiple options. Unless off course you prefer not just the AR ergonomics of the 70s plus the modern updates like right hand bolt release etc. In which case you are looking for a KAC as Darren posted or an LWRC or a frankenstein like the ones I ended up with (ATRS lowers and whatever uppers).

Not lastly, of you just want an AR, something that will go bang and get you in the AR game for the least amount of dollars - it really is hard to beat a Norinco/DA. There are some caveats and limitations that I trust your intelligence with so I won't list them here. By all accounts, this is a 14.5" that will go bang every time or a 10.5" that will go bang for the most part.

Lastly if an SBR is what floats your boat, then still there are a tons of choices of "will work for sure" rifles, like PWS, KAC, LWRC, ATRS, Bushmaster, Daniel Defense etc. I love the 11.5" myself and it was my first AR (based off of the Heat movie) but now I am buying parts to build a 14.5" so I can reach out.

Paul ask yourself what it is you really want from your first AR, and I promise you it is going to be the first of many. Based on that you can better decide on a brand because fanboys not withstanding, there are great many deals to be had if you know the features you want versus fanboy preaching. Case in point is Daniel Defense - they can't even spell Defence properly but just based on a video it has a huge fan following whereas Norinco which is chinacrap just seems to work in a similar package.

Another vote for Colt or DD, but you asked about VALUE for money...

As such I must concur with previous recommendations for CORE. They are built well, and have a great price point and warranty. I suggest you get on it now... You can currently find them for $999, but new imports will be more like $1200 due to shyte dollar...
