Yes, you are all wondering why in God's name a mod is asking this question for, given the constant onslaught of AR-related question......

I own many different firearms, but have yet to venture into AR territory. Therefore, I am asking a very simple question- regardless of cost, which brand or model offers the best bang for the buck? If I have to spend an extra $1k to get there, I am not afraid.

Yes, I know how the search function works, but I have yet to find the info I'm looking for.

Palmetto State (non-PTAC) especially with their FN CHF barrels...but I think the IRG ones brought in only have the 4150 barrels...or the Colt 6920 but I think you missed out on those with our dollar tanking

The thing with AR, is that everyone will have an opinion. It's like the combustion engine...ever company has a gimmick or patent, but they are all very similar.

What's the plan? distance? run and gun? hang it on the wall?

People swear by off shore builds with new internals or even as-is, others will swear by the Gucci kit.

It's a lost cause question. (with respect)

Over here in New Zealand, there are only two contenders for that title. Norinco (so ugly but does the job) or NEA (crazy accurate, ###y, reliable, chicks love 'em etc...).

I've been considering the same. Not wanting to go the Norinco route my choices seem to be the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport and the Ruger AR-556. Reputable companies and should run around $650 and $999 respectively. You can trick them out with all the after market goodies later. The Sport is a bit non-standard. It doesn't have the forward assist or the bolt cover. Reviews I've read, though, seem to show these aren't really needed in the shooting range environment that we're restricted to.

I'm going with Daniel Defense as well. If you want to keep it cheap windham weaponry is a great start as well. old bushmaster guys run the show under the windham name.
