Best bang for buck starter ar?

you need:
1 remove front sight gas block
2 obtain quality new low profile gas block and gas tube pin
3 mount new low profile gas block and pin
4 obtain quality free float hanguard
5 correctly mount free float handguard
6 mount optics or sights
7 go shoot
8 enjoy happiness

note: this will most likely not be easy with norincos due to much hardship in performing 1 & 5 and will result in much lower 8

Specific to Norinco, as someone who has done this (a long time ago when I was young, ambitious and foolish) I could not agree more. Save the time, effort and heartache for your first one and get one set up as close to how you want it as possible. Your next several AR's will give you plenty of opportunity to customize and build and then strip or sell and build again, and again, etc.

PS: before it gets started, this is not a knock on Norinco...i still have my first Norc AR and still drag her out to matches...but removing that sight block and installing any hand guard other than the standard round carbine one is a total PITA requiring more dremeling and swearing than I thought possible.

I can hear the angry typing already. NEA I bought 2 nea rifles used for 1400$ on the ee both in perfect shape and nea stands behind there guns. So far the one I built up shoots great and iv had 0 problems. Flame on haters.

That's like the gun I want. What's the ideal barrel length 14.5 or 16?

If you ONLY get one AR in your life then go with a 16" as it gives you options to shoot in the USA. Also no Chinese ARs!

If you plan on an AR collection, then get every barrel length you can!! There is a HUGE difference between a 7.5" SBR and a 20" SA20!!

ARs are like socks, you can never have just one....

This collection is tiny compared to some of the other guys here.

And don't fool yourself into thinking you will get one lower with a bunch of different uppers because you will eventually find that deal on EE for an upper or lower you just can't pass up, or start building complete rifles out of the spare parts you may have ammassed in your spare parts bin over the years.....

It's a sickness, lol!

^^^^ I thought you said you couldn't shoot straight?
Must be you, can't be these guns eh?:d

Lol, I got lucky a few times but most of the time, I struggle to hit the broad side of a barn. I tried out for our unit range team, but they told me to piss off after two matches, lol! Placed 49 out of 150 and then I was cut. When folks around here refer to guys like Longshot and Gunnerlove as amazing shooters, I have personal first hand experience on why.

The PWS build was able to produce sub moa groups a few times. I've never fired my SA20, but if it's anything like rack #47 at work, it should be good for sub moa. Maybe the IUR as well, but never tried. That short one is just for massive fireballs and jack assery at the range, lol!

What? You have guns you've never shot??
I have a 10.5" but no brake, just the flash hider so not bad at all even when shooting prone. I've tried mtb's IUR. Surprisingly heavy but tight and accurate. Maybe not sub 1 MOA accurate but probably better than you or I could do.
PS if they told you to p!ss off at 49/150, what happened to #50-150??

The gun pictured is 14.5" there is no ideal length they all have there strengths and weaknesses. This is my favorite all around ar but I love all my ar's for different reasons. The one draw back to the nea is the rail is pretty heavy it's not a super light ar. But it shoots great I have a vortex spitfire 3x and it can out shoot my skill all day long.

Lol, you should have seen the top 20 guys, there are some amazing shooters in the CF, and some of them came from CSS, not even the combat arms.

Yeah, my SA20 is a safe queen, lol! I can abuse the queen's rifle and shoot her ammo so I figured I can hold off on beating the crap out of my personal rifle, hahahaha! I almost got into a Norc again, just as a beater rifle, but I basically abuse the hell out of my 10.3in build.

What about NEA they have ar'so with long hand guards like Daniel defence right around 1000$.

I hear you can get NEAs for way less than $1k. They had a sort of bad rep around here with their earlier offerings, but a lot of folks have said they've gotten a lot better.

Let's not start on the NEA thing again, k?
People get banned, threads get derailed when NEA comes into the discussion.
Summary, Gen 1 bad, Gen 2 possibly ok. Warranty good.
NEA is like the Canadian Norinco. Cheap, most work ( and well!) but you git what you git!!

I dont even speak about nea anymore.
I hear they are looking at making an ar10 style non restricted rifle, so thats good news.
But then exploding stuff, getting banned, called an imbecile, bah, not worth it, too old for that crap.

If you own a new nea and other ar's you have a valid experience. Most people on this site bash guns they have zero hands on experience with. To the op head out to the range and try a few ar's out, then pick your budget, then find people with first hand experience? then make your purchase. If you live in the lowermainland I would be happy to let your try a few of my rifles. If not find a busy range and meet some fellow shooters and try there ar's. The bottom line is even if you buy a $500 norinco you will be happy you got a ar for a great price and if you have the will and ability to learn and understand your rifle you will be able to make it yours and a good shooter.
