Best Battle Rifle?

I think there are a number of reasons that there aren't more choices in 7.62x51:

1) the ar15 platform and 5.56 is the current military rifles, so many people gravitate to what is the latest and greatest.

2) the 7.62 kicks more and is more difficult to shoot for the average (read the once in a while shooting crowd) person

3) the 5.56 is easier on the cheek and shoulder (see 2 above)

4) the ar platform is very modular and easy to make into very different variations for a relatively low price. whereas there are less options and they are relatively more expensive on an M1A or FAL.

5) there are tons of FAL's, G3's being or have been built from surplus parts making them much cheaper than tooling up a new rifle and the production line that goes with it.

6) tons of Garands through CMP are available
 
We just live in the wrong place for the 'black gun hobby' and unfortunately will never be trusted to have those things again.

The G33/H94 are different rifles and they are not the same as the G3/HK91 if you had actually handled them you would know the difference, but seeing as you are getting your information second hand .Your interpretation of C&L Version is Flawed because this equally applies to the AR10/M16,FN FAL/FN CAL/FNC. both of these rifles AR10/FN FAL used 762x51 as there only cartridge much like the G3 have brought forward a 5.56 version G33.FN FNC/CAL.M16 it is called evolution

The G3 is the G3, but there are a ton of guns based on it. They're all derivative. The HECKLER & KOCH MP5 Submachine Guns work according to the same proven principle of the delayed roller locked bolt as it is also found on the famous G3 Assault Rifle. It's basically the same design, applied to a smaller calibre and different purpose. Put a MP5 next to a 91 and it is quite clear. In other words, they have taken an assault rifle and turned it into a SMG. There is also the HK 93
little brother to the HK91, Cal. 5.56mm x 45 NATO. http://www.hkpro.com/hk93.htm Strictly speaking they are not the same gun, but virtually identical save for calibre. HK used this same basic design they stole from the Spanish on a bunch of guns.

A Bushmaster AR 15 in either 7.62 or 5.56 is still an assault rifle in my books. But the G3 /91 /93 / MP5 situation is a little different because there are so many variants and derivatives and configurations. The same basic design is applied in so many different ways--so to me this weapon is hard to categorize, that's all.

I'm not really sure what your contention is here. I think C&Ls idea is that the round determines the rifle, and mine is the rifle determines the round. We can agree to disagree on this one. But with regards to the latter part of your post, I don't get what you're talking about.

Well, both of you guys are wrong on pretty much all of your facts. No need to debate me, you can look up the Book on Stoner's development of the M16 on the net, order it, read it, and let the designer of the weapon himself tell you. Let it go.

Don't need to order it, apparently you don't understand it. Oh, the design hk stole from the spanish, the spanish stole from the germans in the first place. The roller lock is not new, nor limited to shoulder arms. Actions really have nothing to do with the argument in the first place.
Maybe go talk to your professional NATO soldier buddies, I'm sure you can all sort it out together.:rolleyes:

I'd be curious to know what facts you think are wrong, but on second hand this thread has turned into a waste of electrons. 1108 posts, and this is the first waste of time I've experianced on gunnutz, thanks for broadening my horizons. Does this site have a filter?

Well OK, As to the last part all battle rifles have given birth so to speak of comtempary firearms that are classed as Assault Rifles AR10 which lead to the M16 get what I am saying if not do more reading
 
Best battle rifles. Ummm. The best Battle Rifle in bolt action would have to be the Lee Enfield in any of it's iterations. The Longbranch #4 Mke 1 probably is at the top of the list in the LE family.

As for semi-autos hard to argue against the AK 47 design but the AR 15 and it's variants has got to be in there somewhere.

I would like HK416 modular assault rifle with 16.5" bbl or new Israeli IMI Tavor TAR-21 if I would be deploy to fight urban places.
As for sidearm, any 1911A1 clon with double stack mag in .45ACP

All of the one's mentioned are on my best list. They are all great. It's a balance between what you like or want. The biggest control factor for 99% of us GGN'ers is what we can afford and what we are allowed to have.

My vote go's for the FN C1A1

Of the rifles tested by the U.S. Army way back in the "50"s,the FN or T48 as they called it finished first,and the T44,which went on to be the M-14,came in a poor second.this is from the 11th edition of SMALL ARMS of the WORLD by Edward c Ezell,this is a great reference book,lots of stuff on weapons from WW2 to the "70"s ,covers a few thumpers too.

great thread...I am not a soldier and those who served in my family were field Docs(nasty ####...never the same)...If I may hazard a guess, I would say FN FAL or the Garand. My USA friends would say m14 (real one).

I need a proper rifle....
