Best cartridge in your opinion?

I'm still debating rebarreling my bolt action 308 to 338fed. I keep thinking of reduced loads and light bullets in 308 for my daughter to work into once she starts shooting centerfire

Great to see some 338 fed love on here. I haven't shot one yet but I now own 2 338 fed barrels, dies, bunch of ammo and brass for my Rem 600 build! Looking forward to getting it up and running.

It certainly has my attention for a build in the future. Everything I’ve read so far is the 200-215gr range is more than adequate on game at reasonable distances (300yrds max).

Heck yeah.

6.5x55/6.5CM/7mm-08/7x57 are awful close and such a great place to be. The two older have so much good history and a solid track record, and the two new ones are modernized, more efficient versions of same that work in great modern rifles.

Eff yes. I honestly don't even reach for the axis 223 when I see coyotes. That husqvarna 1640 is such a great handling rifle. Vintage redfield fixed 4x! 40grains of 4064 behind a 100grn softie is DRT

My other want is another 1640 in .270. Not that the 6.5 won't do it ..but I just need an excuse

So does Jack O'Connor.

Yup he certainly did. I have a Kimber 84L MA chambered in 270. The bare rifle weighs 5lb 5oz. I topped it with a Sworo Z3 3-10X42 scope. This setup is easily moa and sometimes better if I do my part. I'm totally satisfied with it for the hunting I do. I got a Spartan bipod from Precision Optics for those longer shots.

I would personally go with the 30-06 by a slight margin over the 308, primarily because I'm a long time 30-06 user. But if I was starting over today it would be pretty hard not to go with the 308.

I’m amazed there is still so much love on the 308, I can’t think of a scenario where it doesn’t comparatively suck even against it’s own offspring.

The gains are miniscule to meaningless for 75% of shooting/hunting.

If we are taking about hunting, the best cartridge is the one that is appropriate for that hunt, securing effective killing. Among the ones that are appropriate, the best cartridge would be the one with the least recoil, and which consumes the least amount of powder.
Otherwise, it has been known for a long time that there is no 'best overall' hunting cartridge. I have no expertise in match shooting.

I understand what you're saying but what about hunting more than one species. There are hunters that can only afford one rifle. Therefore a cartridge with overlap might be the best. jmo :)

In that respect the 30-06 covers pretty much everything. Load light for varmints, medium for deer sized, and heavier for moose/elk.
If they can only afford 1 rifle they are not going to Africa so that eliminates the big boomers.

270, 280, 308, 30-06, 7mm-08, 7x57, 8x57...whatever a guy likes best will all do that job for sure.
