I agree with your statement.
So does Jack O'Connor.

You don't see or hear much of the 338Fed on here..
Great to see some 338 fed love on here. I haven't shot one yet but I now own 2 338 fed barrels, dies, bunch of ammo and brass for my Rem 600 build! Looking forward to getting it up and running.![]()
I'm still debating rebarreling my bolt action 308 to 338fed. I keep thinking of reduced loads and light bullets in 308 for my daughter to work into once she starts shooting centerfire
What's your go-to cartridge for hunting? Whether it be moose, or bear, or deer? Do you have a favorite that you consider a good all-around?
Heck yeah.
6.5x55/6.5CM/7mm-08/7x57 are awful close and such a great place to be. The two older have so much good history and a solid track record, and the two new ones are modernized, more efficient versions of same that work in great modern rifles.
So does Jack O'Connor.
17 hmr - zero ricochets, I shoot more animals with this cartridge than any other and it’s boringly accurate.
I’m amazed there is still so much love on the 308, I can’t think of a scenario where it doesn’t comparatively suck even against it’s own offspring.
If we are taking about hunting, the best cartridge is the one that is appropriate for that hunt, securing effective killing. Among the ones that are appropriate, the best cartridge would be the one with the least recoil, and which consumes the least amount of powder.
Otherwise, it has been known for a long time that there is no 'best overall' hunting cartridge. I have no expertise in match shooting.
I understand what you're saying but what about hunting more than one species. There are hunters that can only afford one rifle. Therefore a cartridge with overlap might be the best. jmo![]()
In that respect the 30-06 covers pretty much everything. Load light for varmints, medium for deer sized, and heavier for moose/elk.
If they can only afford 1 rifle they are not going to Africa so that eliminates the big boomers.
