Best Mauser 98 Receiver

Got that Lyman cocking piece sight and a Lyman 33 (wigwag sight for M-S) from a friend. They are beautifully made.
Went through my barrels, found a heavy benchrest barrel I had threaded for a Mauser and chambered in .243 25 years ago. Shot very well then, but only with light bullets, of course. Tried it on the Browning actions; excess headspace, would accept a Field gauge. Took 10 thou off the shoulder and face, and it turned right onto one of them with excellent headspace on the gauges. Guess I'll have to do something with it now... I think I have a stock that will work.

Below are pictures what I think was AGP answer to same - for a mauser - at least it is soldered / brazed to a Mauser 98 cocking piece. I believe this is a SporTarget sight:
It for sure has "click adjustable" elevation to it - turn the knurled knob and the "0" mark climbs on the scale:
I am not completely certain about windage adjustment - is possible that there is some amount of windage available on this screws that come in from the side? I have no clue what is the significance of the "MS" stamped (not in line) on the bottom might be for...

Is possible. I had read (somewhere?) that Rigby originals had slightly "V" shaped sear engagement - trigger sear had the female "V" - purpose was to re-center that cocking piece sight back to centre for each shot. I can not imagine how hard that would be to do - is out there at the edge of what I can do to hone those things straight across, let alone make two v's (on purpose!) that would fit together!
I had one of those Parker Hale peeps once. Mine was well worn and a bit fragile. There was a small amount of windage adjustment.
The soldering job on yours is none too neat, so I think Tiriaq is right and it's a Mannlicher Schoenauer peep that's been refitted to a Mauser cocking piece.

It was never clear to me - perhaps you know - was "AGP" - Alfred G Parker - associated with Parker Hale - were they the same or different "Parker"??
And gets much worse than the soldering - can see someone really "went to town" with a grinder on the top front edge of cocking piece:

That is my presumption - I suspect someone was swapping trigger sears (different lengths) or perhaps was fitting this one into an altogether different rifle. I have it on my desk as a curio - had a thought that it might look cool on an older 1920's style Euro sporter - double set triggers, etc. As far as I went - just a thought...
I have a possible candidate - a Mauser 98 based sporter with double set triggers, not drilled/tapped on top, but has Euro style side mount for scope - I have not yet determined if for 1" or 26mm scope - I am getting a 257 Roberts barrel made for it. If I can come up with a suitable front sight, this AGP thing might become the rear sight. Is all a bit of fantasy at the moment.
The more I read and shop around the more expensive this project becomes.
I have come to the conclusion that this one may be years in the making if I want to get everything “ perfect” .
Trolling the auctions and e.e for a worthy donour but FN from tradex is still on the board for sure

The thing is that I want to change the bottom metal, safety, and end up with a straight bolt handle. The husqy FN presents a good option because of the barrel already chambered in 8x57. With tradex very accurate assessment of barrel quality I feel “ safe”. Really I need to get an idea of how much each component will cost. If new match grade barrels are coming in at less than getting a nice hinged floorplate from a reputable manufacturer then any number of Mausers with serious stock and barrel flaws would work
I always enjoy the thrill of the hunt for parts and components for guns, maybe this is just delayed gratification. That 8x57 21 h at intersurplus is too nice to sacrifice the trigger, bottom metal, bolt and stock on. The zg-47 at Great North that has been met bjubba could potentially have a barrel that matches its stock…
And then there is the temptation; if barrels, bolt handles, floorplates, safeties and stocks are getting changed why not start with something with the Mauser roll mark, c cut and thumb notch.
I think I will wait for the next maynards or Switzers gun auction and see what is going; lots of customs on the maynards block last year going for 200-350 dollars and hitting a lot of the notes
