Best non-res SHTF gun?

Not sure but I think this is non-restricted?

Remington 870 w/slugs. Being a city slicker I don't foresee any requirement to engage past 50 yards, more realistically it would be less than 25 yards or are we talking about a Blackhawk down scenario?

I would tend to agree. Short range engagements will probably be the norm. However, that is your criteria. What if some scumbag proceeds to engage you at a more significant distance? Would a 12ga. and slugs still be the best option?? Its hard to know for sure, but I'd plan on being able to do business to 200 just in case someone else wants to play it that way. I'd prefer a rifle, semi auto, full capacity mags. Oh wait, its Canada, we can't have full cap. mags. Five round mags with loose rivets then for this guy.

In a shtf-non restricted scenario, a CZ858 with 4 or more mags, lots of stripper clips, etc. All you need is something reliable and capable of sending many rounds down range in a hurry. I have been on a two way firing range before and all you are concerned about is running out of ammo, and your gun going bang every time you pull the trigger. Caliber doesn't mean as much as you think because if you have any hole in you - you are in trouble.

My vote would be with an XCR, Tavor, or AR180B. These would give you many of the advantages of an AR (discussed to death on another thread :feedTroll:) including the ten round mags that most other firearms don't have. I know, I know, Mr. Rivet is no match for Messrs. Black & Decker, but that's not what we're looking at right now :)

The AR180B and XCR also have controls and ergonomics that seem quite similar to the AR-15 family. This is a big benefit for those of us that have put a lot of rounds through an AR.

Another valid option would be a .308 pump action or semi auto (like a Norc M305). Larger, heavier, less suited to CQB/FIBUA (/MOUT for you 'mericans), but it's also got better barrier penetration and tends to deal with longer shots better. Not what my first choice would be, but still a solid selection if something in your environment makes it more suitable than a 5.56mm platform.

Slowbalt...Since you seem pretty focused on having something that you can keep in your truck while you're on the road, can I make a suggestion? An 870 (or Norc/Dominion copy) with a barrel of 14" or 18" with your choice of stock may be a good choice. Pop a pair of ghost rings on it, a one or two shell mag extension, and maybe a side-saddle, and you've got a pretty effective piece of equipment. Remington even makes a version that comes with the 2 round extension and a Knoxx folder. With proper practice on your part, a pump operated shotgun firing slugs or 00 buckshot as the situation requires is a VERY effective system. If you're patient, you may be able to catch something like this on the EE for somewhere in the $500 price range...complete with mag extension and ghost rings.

The reason that I'm leaning towards a shotgun here is two-fold.

#1: Price. You're going to have a hard time getting your insurance to pay for a $3000 Tavor, a $1500 ACOG, and another $500 of accessories that were sitting in your $2000 1994 Chevy Shortbox when it was stolen :runaway: (I have no idea what you drive, but I'm sure you see what I'm saying here)

#2: Heat. Even if you're 100% in compliance with Canadian firearms laws, there is a chance that the County Mountie making a traffic stop isn't clear on those laws, and might take exception to the fact that you've got something that looks black and evil and military and scary in your vehicle. As long as you keep a cool head, this situation is unlikely to have any serious legal ramifications for you...but that doesn't make it any less of a pain in the @rse. You will never win an argument over a point of law with a police officer in that situation.

I'm suggesting the 870 because I happen to own one, and like the variety of aftermarket parts out there. In the words of my friend, "They're just like Lego!" You may prefer a Mossberg. I've never owned one, but their 590 and 590A1 are great value if you want an 18" barrel and ghost rings.

Oops. You asked for one selection. I gave you six. My bad.

I lean towards my 870, 14" barrel, specops stock w/powerpak, ghost rings, side saddle, 1 rd extention. 11 rounds sitting in the two carriers, 6 00 buck, 5 slugs.

If that can't get me home to the rest of the guns, I'm in a baaaad situation where more ammo may not have helped anyways.

When I think about it, I'm about 1 gun and a lot of ammo from being pretty happy about my situation:

CZ-858 + 2.5k ish rounds of ammo
Glock 17 + 500ish rounds
870+100ish rounds
Remington 597 + 2kish rounds
Marlin 1895XLR + maybe 40 rounds...

What I really would need to add is a 308 rifle with optics, 1k 308 ammo, 2k 9mm, 1k 12g, 5k .22, few hundred 45-70. I'd love an ACOG to toss on the 858, and I think any more would just be a detriment.

Hopefully if things ever go south there will be a bit of notice. Decent reloading kit and lots of powder/primers along with bullet molds would be a must as well.

My grocery list:

SKS-D
Savage in 223.
10/22

For those who like to have a truck gun, consider a short barreled lever action in a magnum pistol cal. I like the larger capacity, smaller size, lighter weight, better accuracy, lower recoil, faster follow up shot, longer range as opposed to a 870 pushing 1oz slugs. EQually effective on all forms of varmint.

YMMV.

Um...guys.....how bout ANY of the non-rest BELT-BED semi's??? I'll take the mg-34. Don't see that hard to carry around.

Though, I can't afford one so I say 2ed choise is the CZ-858. I choose that even over my AR180B.

Man you guys are so behind. I state this on the 16th post

When TSHTF, does anyone really care if it is restricted or non-restricted?? LOL

I really don't think it matters. If I have a gun in my hands I am comfy enough with an the ammo I need, I see myself as well.

Guys...remember. It's about the gun you can have close by at all times...

Which one of you is driving around with an AR in your trunk and a bunch of 5 round mags? :D

Most non-retired folks spend 70-90% of their day away from home, that means if it's not on you or in your car, you'd better have a sharp knife!

Well for that criteria, to be able to cary it 24/7 outside of your property. Get an antique revolver. Same rules as a non restricted rifle when it comes to transportaiton and storage.
