Best non-res SHTF gun?

I'd have to go old-school and pick one of my Marlin 336 .30-30's and a couple hundred rounds of 170 gr SP. I can feed the family and eliminate obstreperous bipeds quite handily for some time with this combination. If they are closer than 200m I can hit them, and if they are further away than 200m I can hide or run away.

Oh, and I can use it to get to one of my safes with the "cool" stuff in it also...

Sure food ,water and antibiotics are far more important than what gun we would want to have but how much fun would a thread like that be?
How many gallons of water and what size containers?

I like my SMLE because of the legal 10 round clip loading mags ,in a great cartridge available everywhere in Canada. Add the 1907 bayonet for close quarters and zombies and we are set. I just picked up some WW2 bandoleers and stripper clips off the exchange so I may not be able to send quite as many rounds downrange as a semiauto with lots of 5 round mags but I can come close and I can send them farther.

I also have a nice Parker hale custom no 4 set up with a scope and bipod that also uses the legal 10 round mags and achieve 1MOA when she is fed right.
Not charger loaded but it is nice to have common ammo.

Trapping is always better than hunting for small game but one of those little
.410 ,.22 scout rifles would be near perfect.

A good knife is very important. I am a knife nerd so I am well sorted but most people don't really know what they need. Really a good kitchen knife is probably going to be far more useful than the K-Bar.

Rodgers Rangers during the French Indian wars used a good knife a tomahawk a quality rifle or musket and 60 rounds of ammo as the basis for their gear.
To that they added whatever else they wanted personally.

My 2cents .. HK SL8-G36 .. NON RESTRICTED accurate and available. although I think that I would prefer a larger calibre. 223 may not be the best when SHTF round.

Unsub, I don't know about you, but if "SHTF", I'm taking all of my pins out of my mags. An SMLE having a 10 round clip and being legal isn't that big of an advantage in a life or death riot situation. That's when you need to get out your belt fed to let everyone know you mean business!

If people are rioting, raping, plundering...I think the authorities are going to have more important things to do than charge someone with a firearm infraction.

Better to break the law and live than to die and turn into a zombie...etc.

Agreed.

Hey all,
Last thread pretty much crowned the AR. Now, let's try it again with one BIG restraint : Which one do you consider as the ultimate SHTF non-restricted ? My heart goes to the PE-90, but weight might make it somewhat less desirable. Let's hear ya!!

Need to be a bit more specific, home defense, battlefield etc...imo a 12 gauge loaded with 00buck/slug or a combination of both, don't forget the side saddle. A shotgun is a very versatile weapon although not as ###y as the so called black gun. Try taking the hinges off of a door with a 22 caliber bullet, good luck.

...etc.

Fixed that for ya Sunshine - the only "clip" for a Lee-Enfield is 5 rds...

Having Water, food, shelter, heat, antibiotics and a ton of mundane stuff would make much more difference in survival than whether we chose a cooey repeater over a tavor.

We also discussed that on the weekend. Soap to fight off infection would probably be the most important next to water.

I would expect a SHTF scenario to be something like a major earthquake, followed by major economic disruption in the region. I would want a gun to get from wherever I am to my house, which is really well stocked up with food, water, guns, ammo, soap (good point you guys), medical kit, and fuel.

My criteria for the gun are as follows:

Mag-fed. The tube mags on shotguns and leverguns are too slow to load, and I want the ability to go from "transporting" to "in use" fast if necessary.

Non restricted, so I have it in my truck all the time.

Short enough to swing it around inside my truck in case rioters, looters etc. make themselves a threat while I'm on my way home

Some sort of fast-indexing sight, red dot, holosight etc. I don't care if it's battery dependent; it will easily last until I get home!

Chambered in a round that will put people down, no questions asked. I THINK the .223 is sufficient but it's probably the minimum.

Rifle must be very durable - so no 180bs, obviously. Too bad...they were almost a great solution to Canadian gun laws.

Reliability. Has to go bang EVERY TIME!

My truck gun is a folding-stocked M14s with an 18.5" barrel and an Eotech on it. I can't think of any option that gets me what I need for as little money.

SKS - is the way to go, loose the pin, 10 rounds is good enough, you can load it fast, it has bayonet, it has a cleaning rod and cleaning kit, all package in one.
Never had any FTF/FTE with it...always goes bang...in rain or mud....
.22 is good too, especially if you under attack by very agressive and blood thirsty squirrels in large quantities. ....hungry for your "nutz".... :)
And yes... I don't think it's a good idea to carry along with you all yours .308, 45-70, 30-06, 12g. 20g, .410, portable DVD player, favorite inflatable doll and your mother in law....it takes space...honestly...

.

Ha! my Beretta Storms (note: plural) fall under your criteria much better. Glove compartment can hold 500 rounds easy.

I'll have to go with a jungle carbine. Powerful round, ammo can be got anywhere, light and handy, robust. Good all around handy gun.
