Throwing out the question. Which is best Non Restricted black rifle .223 cal
Also factoring accuracy, reliability, parts availability and price ?

The best non-restricted "practical" rifle is the X95. Not the most accurate but it is the only "battle proven" mass produced design that is being used in actual combat operations in large number.

-Tavor/x95 is a good choice, but not the most accurate.

-RA XCR seem to have its stuff together now and be true with the loctite issue

-ACR DMR suppose to be accurate and reliable but weighs 2 ton lol

-ATRS modern varmint (have one and my pic) is AR like , can be light and very accurate and use many AR parts. But is expansive and has a long wait for delivery. On a side note the "factory model" should be in better price competition with the tavor and xcr.

-Benelli mr1, has AWFULL ergos and mix review on accuracy but is the cheapest of the one I have mention above

-swiss arm is supposedly awsome but does not take ar mags and to me is over price(in the $4000 range?)

-kel tec SU16, is cheap light and accurate as most on this list, but the polymer receiver might blow in your face lol.

-mini 14,(had one) well its not really tactical, its good as is bit to me sucks in a chassie. I would give it a second look wen it was 700-800 dollars a couple of years back but at $1200-1300 no thanks

-t97,(had one) to me the HORRIBLE ergos ( safety at the back and impossible mag release ) were bad enough, without concidering that there is zero protection for an out of battery explosion in this bullpup, plus due to the mag redesign fts are common.

-223 vz58 (I have a x39) light but not optic friendly, a scope is double but the setup will probably suck. Plus the vz had many more part failure problem compare to the cz858.

-b&t apc556, very nice, accurate, pricey and once the buzz was over was drop on the ee by many due to the fact that it was a big monetary investment that had an unpractical stock and weight more then many 308 rifle.

I did go with the Modern Varmint, it was expansive but I do not regret it and would do it all over again. I would say my second choice would be the tavor.

I would say the the ar15 is also a proven system and lets face the facts, the modern varmint is essentially an ar15 with diffrent dimensions in the receiver, diffrent trigger pack mounting and a diffeent way to attach the upper to the lower. They are no parts in the system that have not ben previously tested and proven true the ar15 platform.

I would say x95 vs MV comes down to bullpup vs rifle and accuracy vs price.

And if I could add. Yes the modern hunter series have seen some issue, but that in itself is a whole diffrent thing. The thing is an ar15 is an ar15 is an ar15, chose the make and they are numerous tiny diffrence but most will work flawlessly out the box cause most use the same receiver and the milspec spec standard. Wen it comes to 308 its a crapshoot, there is nomore universal standars, there is variable geometry, weight, dimention and angles. Witch lead to many many more issues not had by the ar15. Most compagny who produce ar15 and lets say have a problem rate of .01% in ar15 might have lets say a 2 % in ar10, (just an example I don't have any numbers).

Care to elaborate or link me to something explaining this phenomenon, never heard that about a t97 before

I enjoy my t97 when it runs properly lol. And I've always loved the mini 14s. I had a su16 explode on me and would never recommend one to anyone else.

Well think of the t97 as a mini 14 or m14 action with a 1/8 plastic cover over it with your face liying on it.

From Wikipedia :
The Chinese have constructed an export version, the QBZ-97, which is similar to the QBZ-95 in all respects except that it is chambered for#5.56×45mm NATOammunition instead of the original Chinese 5.8#mm cartridge and has a deep magazine well designed to accept#STANAG magazines. This rifle is currently used by Ginghis Security Academy, a Chinese private security group, supplementing their QBZ-95's.[13]

That mag redesign is supected by many for the many t97 suffering from ftf, basically the round will jam in the feedramp and push the bullet in the casing.

My vote is for the Magpul Masada (ACR).

Awesome but expansive build! I would say out the box(the dmr) no wen it comes to weight. But if you don't mind a use unit or can find a new restricted version and don't mind the wait, cost and custome aspect of it. Then yes it might be in the top or even the best option. But to me I prefer the weight of my DI MV vs. a piston rifle.... plus I can't afford another NR rifle lol.

I'm anxiously awaiting the RDB, I feel like it could be a contender in this showdown but we will have to wait and see.

I to, I will shamelessly say my RFB witch I use for hunting is amongst my favorite firearms, but is right now at Kel-tec in florida for an overgassing issue that couldn't be resolve by vault destribution.

I still love the gun , really it was still in action, its just the over gassing would have cause some issue down the road due ti accelerate wear and tear.

Yes it happens all the time. I filed little ramps for the round to follow and it helped a fair bit. Is there anything else a guy can try and help fix that issue. If it would run 100% it would be an amazing rifle lol

I am currently torn between choosing the T97 and Mini-14 for next gun. To be honest, if Mini-14 takes AR Mag (especially LAR) there will not even be any consideration needed at all.

Between those 2, there is only one choice (IMHO) an that's the Mini... and that says a lot about my love for the T97, considering i had a mini for all of 12 hours before returning it, as it was the WORST NIB rifle i have ever seen as far a QC went (back in Ruger's "ramped up to meet the demand heydays of the 2012's.). Mags aren't that hard to get, and if you can find one that was built on a Weds, it will serve you well.
