Best NR rifle

"How much are you willing to pay for a NR AR-15?"

That is the key here. If the AR was made non-restricted tomorrow, this conversation would be over. I am not saying that the AR is the best rifle, but all these other options would no longer sell as much as they do.

Absolutely.
It would seem $3000 price tag is code for unrestricted in Canada. I'd bet if they dropped the retail price of a Tavor to $400 it would be on the restricted list tomorrow if not prohib.

The nice thing about the AR15 is the light weight in the front because it just has a small light weight gas tube. These guns with front heavy piston driven gas systems that guys seem so proud to have, while technically/supposedly more reliable under certain battle conditions are no more reliable under practical civilian conditions. I mean seriously, if its good enough for umpteen countries around the world, the AR platform D.I. gas system is good enough for me.

If unrestricted, I'd take an AR over any of them.

We just need to be happy to take what we can get from the non-restricted list.

"Quit pussying around and shoot..." ... "##### you!" ... *BOOM* ... "T97 f*ckers!!"
Sounds like much fun was had by all. Thanks for the video. ;)

Glad you enjoyed the video! It was a fun time!

I should add that on a later trip in the same location my T97 started not feeding properly. I adjusted the gas to the 2 setting and it worked fine. Although accuracy seemed to suffer even while just plinking. When I cleaned the T97 at home, I found a piece of wood (wood chips all over that shooting area) jammed inside. It jammed in right by the feed ramp and fit I. There so well that at first it looked like it was factory! Long story short, crud got jammed in there and the next gas setting kept my T97 chugging along. Lesson, don't put your rifle down in wood chips when not in use! It's a fun little lead hose.

Anyways lots of good rifles for various purposes. Almost pulled the trigger on an ACR a few times. For 308, well I will have to give a NEA 102 a try. Just waiting until fall before I get one. I did however come close a few times to buying one on this second pre order.

If the AR15 was made NR you wouldn't be able to find an 18.6" or longer barrel for the next 5 years... ;)
I'll stick with my Tavor and ACR - they're both infinitely more compact and have one redeeming quality: they're both paid for.

Absolutely.

I like to convince myself that I would have more money from not buying the others if the AR was non restricted. But in reality that's likely not the case.

Happy with my Tavors and PE90 as well. Finally have my Tavor's setup the way I wanted and they came out with the X95. I'm keeping the originals though.

I prefer the Tavor over the newer X95. There's nothing really "game-changing" with the X95 (the ambi mag release is actually another failure point, IMHO) and I think the ergonomics aren't as great. The polymer quality in the Gen 1-2's is also superior. $600 in trigger and miscellaneous upgrades and you've given it a match-grade 4.5lb trigger, ambi safety and eliminated 'Tavor eye'.

got both but wife and i both prefer the originals---ergo and mainly the robust feel----im a big guy so pulling the mid-charge handle also feels cramped for me.

What's the difference in polymer quality between Gen 1-2 and Gen 2.5?

The texture on the first generation feels different. It has a slight rubberized feel on the stock that contrasts with areas like the polymer handguard. It also seems be a bit more durable with respect to scuffs, etc. The newer Tavors (and I'm guessing the X95) have a more consistent polymer/plastic feel throughout and seem to mark up more easily. Structurally I don't think there is any difference, and if I had to guess they probably made the change to reduce costs and/or production time.

I'm not a big guy and I haven't tried the X95 - but I find the controls on the Tavor very intuitive.

I'm not a fan of the CZ858, and I would put it far from the best NR rifle. However if they do ban it, it might work in our favor, as we could then put the pressure on for a simplified classification system and ditch the list of named prohibs, as the Conservatives will be quite insulted if the liberals "undo" their ruling on the SA and 858 and recreate all those law abiding criminals all over again, and might just be more willing to put things in our favor regarding prohibited long guns to spite the liberals.

Yes, a "simplified" classification system... like California's... Careful what you wish for...

all the way around i prefer the original--to the point of thinking of selling my x95 but dont know what to replace it with other than a modern varmit or bushmaster dmr

A ban never works in our favour. Period.
