best semi auto shotgun for self defense, what is your opinion

What is it with all you Nancies and this .. Why do you need it for self defense, call the police, blah blah blah...grow a pair you wankers. If the guy wants advice on a Semi for protection, give advice on the question, don't prove your a B!tch by getting him to justify why he want's it. Do you justify why you want to own a firearm...no I didn't think so. If you have nothing constructive to add, move on to the EE section on buying some testicals.

Now back to the original question, if your looking for rock solid reliability in a defensive semi auto shotgun, I think the Benelli M4 is the way to go. Proven reliability, mag a capacity, 8 rounds with Ghost loading. There's a reason the US military use them, because they go bang every time, and that's what you want. It's pricey, but it comes down to you get what you pay for.

Dont forget about the other things you may have to be doing during a home defense situation that may effect you decision:

1)can the other members of you family operate it
2) can you operate it one handed
3) do you have kids/wife that you may need to corral or guide necessitating one handed operation
4) what is the light option you intent to use while operating the shotgun
5) can the light be operated one handed
6) can you operate it while your hands are very sweaty or bloody
7) can you move around your house at the ready without telegraphing you location

And I am sure there are tons more, these are just off the top on my head

Personally I prefer handgun with mounted light for this purpose

Don't listen to the outlaw guy he's stupid. More ammo is always good. The call the police guy relies too much on the kindness of others let's go take his sh!t. The guy with Turkish banana gun well that just looks unreliable. Wow I'm really getting the hang of that PC crap living in pinkottawa.
I have always thought that a mossberg SA-20 might be the ticket. Grab the bantam short stock, chop the barrel, duct tape a maglight to it. Be perfect for the wife at least.

Your best bet for self defense is to call police
Not if it would take more than an hour to get to you! If you live in a remote location you are on your own for all emergency situations. I always find it interesting that people find it difficult to imagine a situation which is outside there normal frame of reference. A good example of this is Alan Rock who was the liberal minister of justice when bill C68 was passed and who said that there was no need for anyone in Canada to have firearms other than the police or the military.

The question was the best semi. I am totally satisfied with my Weatherby SA 459. Given proper loads it is completely reliable. If you make an error and load it with 7/8 oz, target loads it will not jam but rather becomes a straight pull bolt action.
Light weight, and good balance , a hard act to follow.
