Best Shotgun for Deer - Canvassing the masses

I've been on many shotgun hunts but haven't had many shooting opportunities. My experiences however have been different than yours: most times deer are either out of range of my smooth bore, shot/slug gun, or moving fairly fast. Regardless I can't agree with you that NOT having to manually reload and re-acquire a sight picture is not an advantage. Its simply mathematics. Maybe the real debate is whether its enough of an advantage that it supercedes the benefits of accuracy, reliability and cost of bolts and pumps. But in the real world, as Carverk mentionned, the gun is only part of the equation. Thanks all.

Use a deer call that will bring tham in
I use a deer call all the time mine is home made from wood and rubber band
I don't use grunt calls I use doe or fown
I know sum guys that can call deer using a pice of cut grass and two hands
Once you catch on to it you will never go deer hunting with out it

Don't get me wrong buy the shotgun you like not watt others think is best
But I think a good deer call is all you need calling will help bring them in range
A call will also allow you to freeze running deer
It fun wen the does com right up to you keep working the call that buck is there !

I think carverk you should post a video of this calling you do.
I called a cow moose out once.
Yup, sitting in me boat and the only weapon I had was a fishing rod
and a net.
The time frame was way wong.

I don't know how to past video on here lol
The trick is to not to use any buck calls thay rarely work (only work well full rut is going on)
Doe and fawn calls are your best bet work year round but are really hot vary soon as the rut starts call the girls and the boys will follow
I bet thar is already a video on making deer calls on YouTube already
I use a fown call works like a hot dam in November and are easy to learn
I change my avatar with my Sitka deer and the outlaw
I haven't heard of any one els getting there deer with these small shotguns lol

The browning silver is almost identical to the gold, and when taken apart they look the same.
Iv been using a 12ga mossberg 535 with partition golds for years and it's been a very accurate gun for me. This year I upgraded to the silver in 20ga ad I will never go back to a 12ga ever again when it comes to deer hunting. The recoil is so much less with the 20ga auto loader and the trigectory of the 20ga was so much flatter and predictable then the 12ga. Having less recoil allowed me to focus on my marksmanship principals more because I wasn't concerned about the punishment from a 12ga slug.
Not to mention the look of the silver deer hunter in 20ga is just outstanding.

Just a tip, make sure to allow your riffled slug barrel to cool in between shots and swipe the barrel after a few shells have gone threw.
You will spend less money on pricey sabots trying to dial in the scope.

I'm using a Maxxus hunter with a slug bbl and a Nikon Slughunter scope. Pricey set up at 1st but accuracy at 100 yds is on par with my bolt rifles. So good in fact that I consider it my "backup" rifle for hunting under 125yds.

Chris, thanks for the thoughtful feedback. Spent Saturday shooting targets and really appreciated the accuracy of my wife's new 20 ga Mossberg 500 rifled barrel compared to the old beed site on my 12 ga. Wow what a difference. There are a couple Silvers in the EE but not with the rifled barrel. Will keep looking for one, if anyone has a line on one, please let me know. Thanks folks. Happy Thanksgiving.

I use a rifled barrel 870 with irons, out to 75yds it will cloverleaf. It serves it's purpose well. I've never needed a scoped slugger as the woods are to damn thick. BTW I still run rifled slugs, Buckhammers. You don't have to track deer far........

How do you find the rifled slugs work in the rifled barrel? I haven't tried it, but i have heard the accuracy is about the same as rifled slugs out of a smooth barrel except that they will lead up your barrel faster.

If you are planning deer drives the spray and pray autoloaders and such will serve you well, but if you are stand hunting you cannot beat the bolt guns. I shoot a Browning A-Bolt slug and also have owned a Savage 212 both shot great. The browning is just a much higher quality gun. The biggest difference in the bolt guns are the triggers. In my experience the triggers on all pumps, autos ect suck for accuracy. Another thing is buy the best glass you can afford as the cost of slugs to resight when you blow the seals from heavy recoil will break ya.($20ish for 5 slugs hurts). By the time you realize your scope is not holding zero you could have easily wasted $50 on slugs then have to start all over.

Don't I see 8 holes, not 7 ??

NB, just saw your post after being away for a while. That link seems to be no longer available. What was it? Can you give me any help to see what you wanted me to see? Thanks.
It was a Browning Silver cantilevered camo if I recall. Shame you didn't see it... I can't even remember how much it was sorry.

Bummer! Oh well snooze you lose. I have since acquired an 870 Express combo kit for a price I couldn't refuse, so I have a decent deer slugger for this season. Thanks for the heads-up though. Probably just as well I didn't see it, since I would likely be a grand broker right now. Cheers.
