Beware of Remintons

Remington Quality Control

I bought a Rem 700 5R, was thinking it would be the end all be all. Got it and even though it had an after market stock, it didn't feel right. Also when I mounted the scope (IOR 3-18 FFP 35mm tube) I had to "two" finger the bolt past it. I looked into upgrading it, changing bolt handle - $100, detachable magazine kit - $350US, these two simple things would turn the $1300 rifle into a $1900 rifle. So I thought to myself, why spend all this money to upgrade a rifle?

Then I found the rifle that met my needs and wants - Tikka T3 Varmint. The bolt handle was in the right place, detachable magazine and the action was so smooth! For the money and what you get, well worth it!!

Now if I was looking for a really nice custom rifle, I'd buy a Coyote or Timberwolf.

From what I've heard and seen, Remington has some serious quality control issues.

It's become hit and miss with them, (pun intended).

Personal experience, can't go wrong with a Tikka.

Just my .02

The problem with Remington is Cerberus Capital Management.just a bunch of bean counters, with no concerns of quality conrol. only bottom line, Just like GM & Chrysler have done over the last decade.
Cerbus remindes me a little like most of guys & gals running our Government.
Don't think I will sell any of my 70s vintage 700s

By the sounds of it, I wouldn't, if I were you.

Until people say enough and stop buying products causing a major market share loss, they probably won't change }:-( I just bought a VSF Desert Tan that needs the firing pin done because the bolt hole is too big. Will be sending it to Guntech for repair because I don't have the time or energy to argue with some warranty depo. I will have it trued, bedded & the trigger done while it is there. It shoots ok, but my issue is when you pay good hard earned money you expect a good product. By the time I have all the extras into the rifle, I am creeping up to the price of a stock Sako Varmint which I can almost guarantee would not of had any of these issues. For me, this will be my one and only Remington.

It makes for a good prop for pictures though!

Once guntech works it over I'm sure I will be happy, The barrel does not clean as nice as any of my Sakos, but I kind of expected that. Figured a custom barrel would be in the future somewhere. Really only bought it because I liked the action & stock. I did hope it would be better though }:-( That's is sad though when you come to expect shotty work from a company.

Your going to have the bolt bushed why?

There is a problem with the rifle where?

The only issue I see is how that scope was mounted. But that is hardly Remington's fault now is it?

As I said. Good money should equal good product. There is no excuse for Remingtons famous primer crater issues. I agree that is cosmetic unless you pierce a primer. Still a rifle worth over $1000.00 should not be made like this. For me that just does not do. I feel much safer knowing everything is functioning 100% as it should be. When did our society become so easy to accept second rate workmanship? Quantity over quality seems to be the name of the game. I did not say the rifle does not shoot. It shoots fine. I just feel that for the type of money one has to pay for a rifle like this, everything should function 100% Agree or disagree it's not right! What happens if/when quality slips far enough that someone gets seriously hurt or killed.

As for the mount, I like my scopes back as far as possible. If the extention ring faces forward the scope moves about 1/2 inch ahead more. I have a standard front mount coming that I am switching the extention mount out for. I have had more comments about that stupid mount than I can count on one hand. I did expect that though }:-(.

Hey Proonur, did you switch ammo or go from a copper coated bullet to a straight lead bullet? If not they must of messed up the reassembly or over torqued something because replacement of the firing pin shouldn't give you FTF or FTE, unless the the shell is impaled on the end of the firing pin...

No I was using Federal bulk pack when I started and still am now.
I am not totally ruling out the ammo I'm using though, as I just keep a box in the trunk all the time which I use, so maybe the temperature changes have affected it a bit. I should pull out a box that I've kept in the house and see if I still have all the stovepipes. I'll let you all know.

I think with all the members that post first hand "real" stories of the problems
and negative feed back from Remington products,
word will get around to stay the hell away from them.
Hopefully they will smarten up, before they need a government bailout.:)
Same thing when telling members when purchasing items that
require shipping, to ensure that it doesnt get shiped by UPS.

Every company can have a problem once in awhile, but if thier
warrenty is not worth the paper it's printed on,
that says it all.
The two failing U.S. car makers have been falling long before the recession
came. People were buying Jap cars not because price was cheaper (they were not)
they had a better product and warranty.
The second place over all car maker is Hyundi.(according to Lemonaid)

If you turn your rear base around 180 deg., you will find you can move the scope back even farther, genius.:p

Well when you have produced so many millions there will always be a few lemons.

When truing 700 actions I have seen new and old actions that measured good and bad. No rhyme nor rule to how they may be... Newer actions seem to have more minor annoying "flaws"... most are cosmetic and don't affect performance... others can be a pain as this .204 was.

It's hard to tell a company they are doing something wrong when they are selling all they can produce.

I hope more shy away from 700's so the used price will drop. They are still the best mass produced action as far as I am concerned.

I'm sorry my friend, but you are incorrect. I would have put it on that way if that was the case. If you are refering to the back mount it would interfear with the bolt lift if reversed. It has to face forward to clear.

I have bought and work with about 200 new rifles over the past 25 years. In the last ten years or so I have bought 13 new Remintons, every single one of them had something wrong or needed work to get it to shoot even close to acceptable. Some folks have good luck, but not me. I will never buy another Remington rifle. Sako, Tikka, Browning and Ruger no problems. It always gets me when I talk to somebody at the range claiming their Reminton is the greatest rifle, but its wearing an after market stock, replacement trigger, custom barrel and has been accurized by a custom gunsmith. Sure its a good shooter Bell and Carlson stock, Kreiger barrel,Timmy trigger and Sako extractor.

You are a slow learner. After 13 poor Remington experiences you come to the conclusion that “I will never buy another Remington rifle”.

The prerequisite for becoming a Remington owner is that you have to be a handy man and like to idea of bedding, trigger…. Or have a pile of money to hire a gunsmith. It can’t not be easily understood why people would paid the price of a 700 (not cheap in comparison to others brands) plus the upgrade costs for a piece of junk.:confused::confused:

To have poor design and quality control is one thing but not willing to provide warranty service is totally unacceptable. Like GM and Chrysler, Remington will soon close its door.

A young guy on this site bought a Remington 700 Police in 223 and had to get it replaced. The guns both have a firing pin hole that was too big and the primer flowed back into the hole. He had to send it back for replacement and from my observation I would try to find an older model to shoot before I bought a new one.

I have the same problem with this .204 and from my reading this is a very common thing with Remingtons, another example of poor workmanship.

Cheers!!

I don't think this is jusy the last few years production. My sendero was 8 or more years ago and it wouldn't feed. It would pop shells out on the ground. It went back twice and I was told it would work if I worked the bolt real FAST. I said thats not acceptable and was told to go away no more warranty for me.
I sold the gun and no more Remington for me. And I take every chance I can to tell people what junk they make and the warranty they don't have. I had an older 700 years ago and liked it, so I would like to know if there is a magic age when to not buy one. Or if its just luck. Cuz I have non. I bought a last model Winchester before they folded and it was a lemon too, so that tells what luck I have.
If I buy a gun and it works right out of the box in every way I am so shocked these days. It is a rare thing. My Ruger 416 did. Thats why I still have it.
Remington should be stamped 'made in China'

Remington should be stamped 'made in China'

Maybee if they started making then in China the Quality would improve. These days Remington rifles are over priced junk, the wingmasters don't seem so bad but still not the same as they used to be.

I must be the luckiest SOB on the planet.

I can't even begin to remember how many 700's I've had. Never seen a bolt fall off, never seen misaligned threaded holes, or had one that wouldn't shoot acceptable for hunting.

I currently have 15 700's. All shoot extremely well.:D
One 25-06 was giving me fits for awhile until I figured out it would shoot
115's and 117's way better than 100 grain bullets. Tried 4 different powders, 3 primers and 4 bullets until I bought a box of Federal factory and voila, a group under 1/2".
