Black Creek Labs AR180 based rifle SVR2 Siberian approved for Non restricted FRT

It uses pointed set screws that locate into pockets on the barrel. Pg 15 of the manual shows that. I don't think the WK180 does this?

Correct, as this is missing on the WK, and great to hear on the Siberian! It might be too trickier to use a custom barrel as a result, but probably still doable.

Thread locking the gas block in concert with the more flexible and forgiving nature of the two part piston op rod at a mid length should be enough to prevent the piston snapping, hopefully.

If Bill 21 goes through , hopefully BCL can provide the bolt for the 7.62x39mm and .300 Blackout for sale; the bolt itself should not be prohibited, and what one does with it is ones own business.
.223 5.56 and .300BO all use the same bolt. Fairly good chance this is a common 180 bolt so x39 bolts from other manufacturers or AR15 bolts with the gas rings removed might work.

Doh, can't believe I forgot Blackout uses the same bolt! :p A 7.62x39 mm may also work for Grendel, too; hopefully a de-gas ringed AR bolt will work.

Well, I’ve got a bunch of photos but I’m not sure where to host/upload them?

I can confirm the gas block is held via two pocketed set screws.

I lean towards disassembling this rifle when you purchase it as there is a distinct lack of lube/grease on it as delivered, and I found a couple of the screws seemed on the loose side and could benefit from a drop or two of loctite I’d say.

Overall disassembly is pretty simple though. I didn’t get into removing the trigger assembly because I’m just not looking to mess with the springs at the moment.

Thanks for the info! If you post privately to Imgur they don't seem to pull gun images, as no one complains. You can the click on the image, select share, and the select share to bbcode to get a forum link. Add a lower case L between the end of name of the file and the ".JPG" or ".PNG" to make it a more forum friendly size. For example, image.jpg would become imagel.jpg .

I’m not sure I quite get the how to share, but at least here’s a link to the album. I got some shots comparing it to my R18 as well.

Edit: I used to be good at the internet haha

Thanks! I will see if I can post them in-thread for you when I get home.

Cool to see they shrunk the length of the rails as well compared to the Sterling; I imagine the Siberian is shorter then the Sterling?

Did you have to remove the gas block to remove the piston? Thanks!

You can't remove the piston and cup without removing the gas block? If that's actually the case that's a ridiculous design flaw.

I figured it'd be like the original where there is enough play between the cup and rod that you can pull them apart and slide them off.

Despite my intense reluctance to say anything positive about a BCL product, I must admit that I like what I am seeing and hearing thus far. This Siberian may just be enough to get BCL out of the "doghouse" with Canadian firearms owners....

There are a few things that raise my eyebrow on this, the first being the fact you have to take the gas block out to effectively clean the gas as Dave mentions above, and also the captured guide rod with the wire ring isn't what I'd consider an upgrade.

Laugh2

"Sub-moa with match ammo"

I'll believe that when I witness it.

Yeah the gas block needs to be removed, there’s no way to get the piston out otherwise.

how about splitting the upper and lower, would that release the piston from the block after the carrier is removed? can the handguard be removed without any difficulty? not crazy about removing the block to clean the piston.

It is an ... interesting design choice. On the one hand, it ensures the gas block is tightened every 1500 rounds and thread locked if you follow the recommended maintenance routine. On the negative sign, won't there be wear and tear on the threads of the gas block every time they are fastened and unfastened? Will the same wear and tear apply to the handguard fasteners? And for .223, most people shoot relatively clean and non-corrosive ammo, so 1500 may work. But how many more fastening cycles will someone who shoots corrosive in 7.62x39 mm go through? And how many people will neglect cleaning the piston after a corrosive shooting session because it is a pain? That is more of a future thing, since we don't know if the 7.62x39mm will ever be released with Bill 21 to worry about, but if it is, hopefully BCL will have an easier cleaning solution when they make that version.

thanks for stripping it down, I'm going to go back and clarify what I posted earlier. no way in hades am I going to remove the gas block to clean the piston, if anything I'm reaching for the red loctite to keep it in place. now going back to my earlier post, can the upper and lower be easily separated so one can insert a reaction rod and spin the barrel nut off? this is very inconvenient but from my perspective the only way to get at the piston and block for a proper scrubbing without taking the block off the barrel.

The forward pin on the upper/lower is retained by a detent ball I believe. I think it would be popped out with a punch and the two would separate without issue.
I didn’t try it at the time but I don’t think it would be any more difficult than any other AR type platform? It’s very similar to the R18.

If anything you’d find it more annoying removing the hand guard. It’s a tight fit too the upper, but might loosen up after a few goes.

The thing with the piston is it sits about an inch into the upper, but only has about 1/2” of stroke/play. There isn’t a way to remove it from the gas block with that amount of room. The R18, despite having significantly more stroke, has the same style design (for the record, as I type this I think it might actually be possible. Again, amateur here)
