Black Rifle For Hunting

I thought you had a MH and a couple of uppers to go with it?

Traded the MH and sold the upper found out I hate black rifles hunting
Just to awkward and noisy it would work hunting in a bline or short hike but I don't hunt like that I stalk my game so need light and quite rifle to pack on foot for hunting and work

You could always do something along the lines of what I did...Remington SPS Tactical in .308, dropped into an MDT LSS chassis. It is a bit heavy but that is strictly due to my like of a heavy barrel. Thank god it's only a 20" barrel instead of 26" or 28" lol.

But don't be brand specific...you could easily replicate what I did with a Savage, Tikka, Howa bolt gun of your choice

Out West here I hunt moose, big whitetails , big mule deer and elk. Shot placement is vital.I drop them where they stand with .338 Winchester Magnum and can expect a bit of a run with my 30-06 or 7mm remington magnum. For me its always been about an accurate heart/lungs shot. One shot. Rifle model choice should be about fit and features that you like.

In BC there is no caliber restrictions on deer. It just needs to be a centerfire cartridge. You will get a lot of opinions and controversy on this topic as to what you should use as a minimum caliber/cartridge.

I don't see an issue with using a tactical gun as a hunting rifle. Its really a personal choice.

The .223 rifles are too expensive, heavy and make too small a hole for most game.
If all you do is varmint up to small game, then the Tavor or the Keymod XCR-L would be the only ones on your list I would agree to.
Most hunting is hiking with a rifle. You'll appreciate any weight you can save.
The XCR-M is about 12Lbs loaded with a scope, no bipod. And LONG!
The novelty of carrying a black rifle will fade quickly when you have to lug it around for a day.
For hunting, stick to a nice bolt action in 30-06 or .308. Put a good sling and 3-9x scope on it. It'll be more comfortable, take most anything you can shoot around BC, lighter in weight and come in less in cost than a Tavor, SL-8 or XCR.
YMMV

Are we talking ammo costs or rifle cost?

BC you can use a .223 on big game, and I've killed black bear and deer with it. But unless you are a handloader or can buy loaded ammo with big game bullets instead of FMJ or varmit bullets (which is what most .223 is loaded with) then it's not a great choice. And for larger animals like moose, I wouldn't choose a .223 unless I had no other choice.

I've been eyeballing a Troy PAR in 300BLK for a deer hunting rifle. It's 6lbs and change, and will work on deer to 300 yards. And again, the 300 BLK is best handloaded or using ammo loaded with hunting bullets.

The .308 PAR is considerably heavier, probably heavier than I personally want for a .308 hunting rifle. But I have no doubt it would work well as a hunting rifle and that may be a good choice for you.

Before C-68 came to be my favorite moose hunting rifle was a HK-91 with either a 2-7 scope or an occluded gun sight. Took quite a few animals with that set up.

The good old days!

Rifle cost. All the ones you mentioned are north of $2500 new.
.223 hunting ammo is around $1.00/ shot +/- factory.

I honestly don't mind paying for a quality product if it ticks all the boxes.

I saw some 223 today for ~$12/box (20) - I guess you're talking about high grade ammo?

You could Zero Dark Thirty a Remington 7400, 750 ...

Yup! You need hunting ammo. The FMJ stuff is usually about $0.50/rd.

As far as a black rifle for hunting, please reread my earlier post for my suggestion....which is not a black rifle in Canada.
IMO, the best, bar none, black rifle for hunting is the AR platform with whatever custom barrel/ caliber you want but you need to move to the States to use it!

When deer hunting/dogging in Canada, I use an xcrl keymod with the 6.8 SPC barrel, bolt group, etc. and use it with the 223 barrel kit installed for coyote calling.

It really depends on what you want, what you hunt, how you hunt, where you hunt and what you wish to spend.

I occasionally use my Tavor for deer hunting, although i haven't taken an animal with it yet. It's heavy, doesn't carry all that easily unless you carry it in the low-ready position, and it's somewhat awkward with the 5/30 round mag sticking out the bottom. It's really not a good choice for a rifle you are going to hump around mile after mile, over hill and dale. I've owned a 308 PAR and everything I've just said about the Tavor applies for it as well. Hell, pretty much the same can be said for all NR modern black rifles.

If you're not shy about spending money and really want a nice, lightweight hunting rifle that will last you forever, look into something like a Kimber Adirondack or something like that. Sure, it's a fuddly bolt gun and you won't look as ninja when walking trough the bush. But the trees, rocks and squirrels and #### aren't gonna care and you'll be a lot happier carrying a much lighter, ergonomic, and better balanced rifle if you have to carry it for any length of time than you will if you choose to go the route of the NR black gun.

As for 223 ammo, yes you probably saw the cheap plinking stuff. In front of me I have 2 boxes of Remington HyperSonic 62 grain bonded pointed soft points. Each box was about 40$. So you're looking at closer to 2$ a round for good quality 223 hunting ammo rather than the .60 cent plinking stuff you saw. Just FYI if you choose to go the 223 route.

Moose/Deer but I`d like something that works as an all rounder in the event my needs change

Maybe consider something that is not a black rifle? There are tons of great guns for moose and deer, most of which are not black rifles.

If you must go black, maybe look at an sg542.

When hunting larger game i was taught to use a minimum of 270 caliber or greater.
Alberta laws dictate that no hunting of game unless it is larger than a 230 caliber so that rules out a 5.56 or 223 exception coyotes
308 has been a reliable round since 1940s i believe
What ever you decide good luck
