The PMAGs are 30 rounder pinned to 5
Pretty sure many of the retailers have the PMAGs in stock, just not listed online since they want to sell it with the rifles they are selling. TNA or Wolverine come to mind. The recent batch just came in, so I wouldn't be surprised if somebody will soon launch the Stanag adapter again. I saw a post last year when people expected the HK to be 3,500 to 4,000.
Had a quick look, and found them! Seem more reasonably priced than an SL8 mag.
I tried the sl8 but it’s too darn big for me . I prefer the Tavor myself .
I've only held one in a shop a little while ago, I didn't mind it. But that's in the gun shop, not out in the wilderness. I've never held a Tavor, held an AUG at Bud Haynes many blue moons ago before I really knew what was what. A compact arrangement would be nice, but I'm leaning more toward traditionally styled mag up front on this one.
Something else: Norinco Type 97 gen 3. Add a nice AR optic and you stay within your budget. Like an Athlon Midas 1-6x24.
Not a terrible option, but the mag release and safety... ergonomics kind of suck in both of those areas.
Good points, again leaning more toward traditionally styled mag up front on this one. I guess it comes down to "if I can only have one"...
It really depends what he wants to do with it. I read about the mentioned issues and it depends how much weight you put on it. There is a lot info out there about the Tavor but not much about the Type 97, the main reason being that it is not sold in the US. But it is half the price and the gen 3 is excellent. And when he says 2K, the rifle has to be a lot less than 2 K. Unless he wants to put another 1K into an optic. Personally, I would never put a cheap red dot on a 2.5K rifle but some people do it.
Yes, it feeds AR mags and 10 rounders reliably.
I'm really honing in on just the rifle, optics can come later. I personally really like classic irons. As I get into more of this new pool of shooting I'll figure something out. I'm perfectly happy with irons or a cheaper scope or red dot/magnifier set up. The people I'll be shooting and training with are ex-caf with experience with AR-type platforms, not bull-pup, and I figured as a "hunting varmints" gun I'd prefer mags up front. I know you can train and get proficient on any system, but I'm sticking with the typical.
Phhhtttt ... the vast majority of X95 are priced at $2600 and up. Yes there is the odd one going for cheaper but they are pretty rare and those ones are gonna sell QUICK.
Yeah, any deals get snapped up quickly!
I'll just clarify my objective with this rifle
1x Black gun
-looking at this through the lens of:"If I could only have one"
-Non-bull pup
-Accepts AR mags
-Non-restricted (Pre C21)
-Semi-auto
-Shoots 223/5.56, 223 Wylde etc
-Quality build
-Avoiding WK-180 gen 1, and gen 2 isn't looking good either
-Budget ~2k
Use:
-Recreational paper target shooting
-Dynamic shooting sports
-shooting gophers, coyotes and wolves
Contenders:
SL8- A lot of you guys are saying its a really good rifle, A+ that's great
-Seen on sale at 2k mark
-AR mag adapter
-Proprietary mags are expensive
-Cons I can see- How long with this polymer hold up to field handling, UV rays and cold weather
-I do understand HK is a high-quality brand using higher-quality materials
WX-MCR- it's a bit better than the WK-180 series. Needs Loctite and constant checkups, maybe an aftermarket gas block.
If my life relied on this rifle I'm not sure I wouldn't meet my maker...
If all else fails option, will be investing in spare parts, would opt for spec 180?...
New additions:
Recommended from my range guy
Crusader 9/5.56 by Crusader
-I like that it is available with an interchangeable upper 9mm and 5.56 (Too bad it wasn't set up for Beretta 92 mag...)
-non-180 system
-It is above the $2k mark- but it is a two-in-one kind of rifle- more use- I like that
*Going to hunt down a thread on this guy*
Crusader Templar
-Read a few pages of the dedicated thread, seems to be a mechanically functional gun without any major hic-ups
-slightly above the $2k mark, higher quality build?
BCL Siberian
-Ticks all the boxes I think
-Aesthetically pleasing
-"Quasi 180" what's that mean?... how is this rifle functioning and will it have the pitfalls of the WK180 series
-Unreleased to the public yet, not sure how they'll hold up
-December release?.. will I be able to find one
-$1700

My current disposition summary:
Optics can wait-I'm focused on getting a rifle first- I'll get one
Ammo- well I'll get some- obviously
Weighing the SL8, Crusader 9/5.56, BCL Siberian.
-I've been a fan of H&K for a long time, I really like this gun, but I'm implicitly biased toward European and more so German guns, they do make a great rifle. I've wanted one of these guns since I first encountered one in the firearms appraisal book about 10 years ago. I want to balance that bias and fanboy in me with the logical side of the cons of how long this polymer holds up to field handling, UV rays and cold weather.
-Crusader 9/5.56, I like the versatility of the platform, multiple calibres, and the video I watched being able to have two uppers and change the two in nearly two minutes with no fuss, A+. -I do have one handgun in 9mm already, maybe I don't need a 9mm rifle but it is cheaper to shoot 9mm over 5.56 when doing shooting exercises.
-BCL Siberian, the rifle is the middle ground, with a $1700 price point, very sleek looking but untested, the quasi 180 style has perked my concern due to the nature of problems stemming out of the MCR and WK180- will that follow into Siberian? Will I be able to snag one of these rifles up?
So I'm going to keep these things on my mind, keep engaging with the community here, keep reading the forums here, and do the deep dives. I'll be at the Edmonton gun show this weekend, I'll possibly engage with other people from vendors. At the moment the budget is basically one rifle, so I'm looking at this through the lens of "if I could only have one", this is how I came through the pistol ban. I had better background knowledge in pistols, and I knew the ones I wanted and what I liked, so I pursued the Beretta 92 and an iteration of the classic Luger. I came out of that fiasco prepared for this one.
I appreciate the comments and insight from everyone, this is helpful.
