Blackhawk Serpa...Fact or Fiction

You wouldn't happen to be married with TDC by any chance? Are you two always like this? :D

LOL!!!!.....it's a love/hate relationship....I'm sure he's a good fellow, he's just strong on his beliefs. I'll certainly consider his advice just like everyone else's. My father used to say "you won't know if you don't ask". Not all answers are agreeable....but at least I got an answer

Don't make assumptions.....I said I don't compete, that doesn't suggest I'm clueless or have no working firearms experience. I'll decide what level of retention I use, or how I handle my firearms. I shoot to relieve stress not surround myself with it with buzzers and timers. If I wanted to be around irritating noises.....I'd just stay at home and listen to my wife talk

If you haven't received professional instruction, then you don't have a clue what you're doing. Based on your holster choice, you clearly have no clue what you're doing. If you don't draw a loaded firearm from a holster under stress, you haven't a clue what a quality holster offers you over a POS like the Serpa. Stress is mostly self induced stupidity, and if you view your wife as "irritating noises" I suggest you separate. I'm sure it would do wonders for your stress.

In my original post, I clearly stated that I had just purchased this holster and had no experience with it. I simply wanted to know if it still carried it's questionable reputation, or if there had been something new added to previous discussions on it. I didn't come here to argue.....I just wanted to know what to expect from it. Thousands of these holsters are still being sold....I wanted to hear from both sides and form my own opinion.

Seeing as how less than 1% of all firearms owners ever seek professional training, its not hard to see how fools are sold such sh*t. There are still plenty of Kia's, McDonalds and SKS rifles being sold, that doesn't mean any of them are good products.

You still haven't answered the question of why you feel the need for a level two retention holster when you admit you don't draw, compete, train, or serve??

You just don't stop do you?......I likely know more than you do.....I just don't make a habit of spouting off about it.

If you "know" more than why are you asking for others opinions on a holster that has a long standing reputation as junk, an why are you running it? More importantly why are you using a holster if you never draw from it?

ETA: If you know as much as you do you would be defending yourself and/or proving me wrong, so what are you waiting for??

Man!.....you sure seem like you have a lot of bottled up stress!.....ever think about Yoga?....you know,..get in touch with your inner TDC and find your zen!.....how about a bunny?...you can keep him in your range bag as a constant reminder of how simple and happy life should be. Take a deep breath in through your nose....and slowly let it out your mouth....There!...wasn't that nice?.....that bad ol' stress just melts away!

Very Clint Eastwoodish. You're just missing the "punk" at the end. Did I fire five shots or did i fire all six shots?????Punk:p

And your reference source for this statistic would be .... ?

Most of the handgunners I know and see at the range are into one of the shooting sports - CAS, IPSC, IDPA, whatever. These sports require some training, which while not "professional" per se, is far and above what the people shooters are given.

I'm not all worked up here, you're the one who is calling me names and making ad-hominem attacks. I'm simply asking you questions which you consistently avoid answering and apply some logic as to why your gear choice is poor.

I had a poll on here(with the help of another member) a while back regarding those who've trained vs those who haven't, the numbers are overwhelming. Additional sources of info that reflect that value came from head instructors from two schools I have attended. Some anecdotal evidence would be the distinct lack of courses offered in this country and the lack of interest. Another less than scientific form of evidence to support the lack of trained individuals comes in the form of what I see at the range and at matches time and time again. This forum is yet another example of less than informed/trained inidividuals, this thread is a prime example. All courses I've attended in Canada were less than full roster. I would say a black badge course is better than nothing, but it all depends on the instructor. Have a read from newfoundlandrover's quoted post above. He hasn't even used the holster, and yet he is defending it..

Wow, heated thread. :)

I've taken 3 TDSA courses with my SERPA (Glock 17), lots of "loaded draws" during those courses. Personally, *I* never had an issue, and like the holster.

That being said, I think my club won't allow them for IDPA, so I'll be getting another/different holster when I take my IDPA courses.

I tried a few yesterday at a local shop, I think there was a Blackhawk and something else. I quite like the thumb-depress mechanism, but it has (in my opinion) a drawback when compared to the SERPA. With the SERPA, when I grip the firearm to un-holster, my grip is "set", I don't need to adjust it AT ALL when moving to fire.

I found, while admittedly just trying it in the aisle of the store with their display (solid plastic) Glock, the Blackhawk with the thumb release didn't leave me with a proper grip on the gun, and I had to adjust my grip when I brought it up.

I'll need to find somewhere in the Golden Horseshoe (Toronto/Hamilton) area that has several holsters on display so I can try them.

So yeah, add me to the "SERPA Worked Great For Me" crowd, but I'm looking for suggestions on other Level 2 holsters.

Is this whole battle just because of this 'Tex Grebner Outdoors' guy shot himself in the leg? Proper training will reduce your chances of something wrong happening. But there is a risk no matter what type of holster you are using. Practise makes perfect :)

My gear choice is fine...and so far its all worked well. I asked for input on the Serpa, and many submitted their thoughts, but nobody else went as far as to question my knowledge of shooting because I bought a holster that they felt was substandard.

If you're going to call me out and proclaim to be of sound knowledge, then prove it.

Does ''TDC'' mean anything in particular? Have you considered ''TCB'' as a name? Taking Care of Business is what you do! :D

A any rate, what did you say you use? A safariland 6004?

I can't decide between a Safariland 295/6280 or a Serpa Level 3 Duty… Glad it worked out for you :)

If your gear choice is/was fine then why are you asking for opinions on an open forum?? Then when you receive the opinion that the Serpa is a POS from many known and knowledgable members you still refuse to accept it?

I have used a 6004, but I run a RCS now, in fact I've been running it since early 2008. I also run Crossbread, all are level one retention. My screen name is an acronym, look closely, the answer is there.

Well given the nature of your posts I'm leaning towards ''Technical Data Coordinator'' or ''The Dueling Club'' or ''The Discovery Channel''.

I understand you go for high speed low drag. After seeing a guy running in the bush with a HP trailing behind him leashed to his gear with para-cord, my main concern has always been retention and knowing if I run around doing my job I won't have to worry about the pistol slipping out. I have a 6004 and it does that job very well. Just got to get the right technique to disengage the SLS rapidly and you're good to go.

OMG!.....its like talking to my mother inlaw!!!....you made your opinion quite clear!....you think the Serpa is a POS!...I got it...we all got it.....even the guys in the Mountain Bike Forum got it.....lets give it a rest man! Can I send you an aroma therapy candle or something?.....how about one of those stress balls?...its gotta happy face on it:)

I'm not entirely certain why you are so keen to defend a holster that has long been regarded as sh*t by anyone in the game, and one you have next to no experience with, nor am I sure why you want a level 2 holster in the first place.

Is it the price? What is it about the serpa that drew you in?

This is a question that has long baffled me because many options from bladetech, bravo concealment or raven are literally one wing night away from pricing wise, hell some bladetechs are a happy meal away from serpas in price. What is it about this holster that has such rabid fanboyism? Is it because it goes against the grain? It's the unpopular choice?
