Blackpowder gun of the day, week?

having trouble with my photo software. can't get it to down load. if i get it working i'll post some pics. beauty wood on that pistol. some pretty nice pictures right thru this posting. since they started the BP posting it's sure been busy. i believe the initials TS are on my rifle. that would be Taylor S.

I've been dying to post some pictures since the BP forumn opened up and FINALLY I have figured out how to upload to my own website. :D

One of my favourite BP pictures. I was out hunting coyotes with my .54 cal Jeager rifle. It was a sunny warm day for October and some late gophers were running around tempting us. My buddy tried about a half dozen shots with his scoped .243 and couldn't hit anything. :shock: I whacked this guy with my first shot from about 40 yards. 8) If you look closely you can see the 230 gr roundball blew most of his spine out. :wink:

Another cool BP picture. The big flinter throws up so much smoke the rifle is almost invisible.

Not quite as dramatic but a nice flinter picture none the less. This is on the Trail at the BC Gopher Shoot Rendezvous. No, the pictures aren't backwards, I am a lefty.

where was the shoot you were at? been trying to find some around calgary but started looking too late and missed them all. nice looking gun ... tell us about it. sorry looking gopher. i like chasing them with my 36. the effect is about the same tho.
darned if i can figure out how to get pics on this site. got my software working tho.
 
The rendezvous pics were taken at the Merritt Gopher Shoot which is no more (I think) because the site got logged. We went about 5 years in a row and even got married at the last one we went.

The rifle is a custom Jeager built in AB. I won't say by whom cause I am less than impressed with the work for what I paid. However it does shoot well.

if it shoots well that's one thing in it's favour. mine is a bit of a swine. built in alberta too.
did you make the whispering pine shoot? i haven't been there for years. no one knew where it was, and i sure couldn't remember. oh well.
 
My latest BP project - a restoration of a flintlock pistol - This is a "hated" Jukar pistol, ca, what, 1970, representing a pistol from the period 1725-1825. This was a clunker when I bought it, complete with registration, ATT, :roll: :roll:
Rusty barrel and hardware, finish about 1/4 gone on the wood. Fortunately the bore was good, lock was excellent. The barrel had little to no serious pitting and the rust cleaned off nicely. I debated rust bluing the barrel, but decided to leave it bright - it has a faint rust shadow in the steel which gives it a bit of age character. Only had to replace a couple of screws. Right hand lock plate is an add-on - originally only had the brass washers. Very pleased with how it came back. .45 cal, Spanish mfg. These are just some quick scans of it.

OK Show-Offs

Now you've done it . You've pushed an old Skinner back over the edge . Looking for 50 to 54 cal prefer Plains or Longrifle , could live with a Hawkens . Have some modern guns to trade off. I was heavy into the muzzleloaders in the late 70's early 80's. Have owned Mowerys ,T/C,Lyman Trade and Plainsrifles, CVA and Fox Tradeguns. The photos shown here have set off the desire again . Modern rifles have no charactor compared to the rifles shown here. Keep your powder dry and your flints sharp.

nessy357 , as soon as I get everything lined up I'll be putting things in the exchange. We use to have a real active bunch of skinners and longrifles in this area , don't know where they've got to. Sure would like to find them again , we sure had some "shinein times" .
 
Pictured below is my .62 cal trade gun made by Caywood Arms. It is the "Wilson Chiefs" model and features brass but plate and nicely figured wood. I had it left in the white and will let it develope its natural patina. The lock is by Mike Rowe and arrived well tuned and I am told by those that know is very fast. The gun, when assembled by Caywood comes with a lifetime warranty. I am still working up a load for it and tape on a temporary back site for grouping purposes. It looks as though it shoots well with evrything from 55 grains FF on up to 70 grains. In wet weather I have found it an advantage to use 2F in the pan also as this results in less build up of residue and ignition time seems about the same.

Just got a Lyman Great PLains Hunter (caplock), and I have an (inline) T/C Omega on order. However, my favourite has been and is likely to remain my .50 cal Lyman Great Plains (flintlock) Rifle.
I love the smell of blackpowder in the morning.
 
Here's one i just got back from a round and around type of thing.
Riflw was put together by eric martins, Lock was engraved by Denny Sanderson.
I cut the dovetails but never hada chance to finish it before i traded the stuff.
Furniture is German Silver.
The buffalo on the lock is copper enlayed, but the pic ain't the best.

The gun was made about 1850 in Birmingham and the first photo shows the single set trigger stripped apart. When I acquired the gun, the trigger was broken in half and I filed out a replacement, although rather a clumsy job. Also refinished the barrel and made a couple of missing sights.

I am posting these pics to see if I managed to copy photos properly into the body of the message. The gun is a .58 cal built around a british military barrel @1850 and an original enfield lock. It approximates a military pistol of the day.

I Have Returned

Last night I returned to the fold :) . I picked up a .50 Safari Arms Hawken,with two keys, electric melting pot, 100lbs of soft lead, twin cavity lee molds, 1 lb of 2ffg, caps, for $200.00 . Could'nt refuse the deal.I'll be shooting this weekend.
 
Seems like time for another gun of the week photo.
The two guns pictured are an 8 guage hammer double
by John Manton company @ 1880 and a 20 guage hammer
double by Deane, Adams and Deane @ 1870 for comparison.
The 8 guage is probably a former market hunting gun and
utilitarian in construction. The Deane is a well made gun
and the bar on the wrist of the gun is a safety grip that must
be squeezed before the triggers can move. both are fun guns to
shoot.
