BLR in .358 Winchester - I think I need one!

Do any of you BLR .358 owners have 100 yard group precision/accuracy info or bullet velocity information to share? If so, I'd love to hear it!

How about a picture of your rig with a mounted scope? :)

Thanks, Jeff.

Hmmm, a BLR in .358, eh? Yes I have had a few of those and they are nice guns. WHAT'S THIS in the gun locker????? By golly, where did that BLR Lightweight 81 in .358 come from???? And a ghost ring rear sight, how cool is that!

;-)

My last one was an 81 and it liked the Speer 220 gr flat-nosed bullets. (Yes I know that sounds strange, but that's what it liked.) Accuracy load for me was CCI BR2 primers, 48.0 gr H3031, and the Speer 220s. It was a bit stiff, but there were no pressure signs on the cartridges, and it shot the best of the loads I played with. I never did shoot it past 100 yards, however, so the flat point bullets were kind of an academic subject - I think at longer ranges I would want to be looking at spitzers, although the 225 gr Nosler Partitions were not all that impressive for that rifle.

Houligan, are you looking for a .358 again???

Hey Jeff/1911
One of my hunting buds has a 308BLR with a Leup 1x4x20 on top. He's had that combo for around 25 years. He calls it his "confidence builder" cause he has been able to shoot it so well over the years. I have witnessd him kill a few deer with that combo - VERY QUICK TO UP AND SHOOT. He's shot lots with it when I wasn't around too. Having it in 358 would just make it more a more powerful combo.

I've had my 358BLR for years but no scope on mine yet (that soon may change) - click on this link to view it along with some loading notes - http://35cal.com/loading.html#blr

Hello,
One of my .358 BLRs will put 3 Sierra 225gr bullets into 1.25" at 100m. It has a Nikon 4x scope on it and I have shot 9 or 10 Moose and several deer with it.
The .358 Win loaded with the Sierra 225gr bullet is very effective on Moose. Hits hard and puts them down fast.
I haven't worked up a load for the other one yet.
See Whelen B's website above for more info.

Good Luck
John

I love my BLR in .358 mine wears a Weaver Grand Slam 1.5 -5x, its light, accurate and hit like a ton of bricks out to 250 yards. Mine loves 200 gr Rem CL PSP with cci primer and H4895

The most accurate load that I found for my 358 was 49 grains of BLC-2 behind a 250 grain Hornady round nose with a Winchester large rifle primer. If I do my part, I can get 1" groups @ 100 yards with it.

Nosler Partitions, Nosler Ballistic Tips, & Barnes-X didn't shoot worth a damn! I see Doug had similar results.......

That seem to be picky about loads.

Back to BTK.........funny that you had your best load with a round nose bullet as well. My load listed above was also into an inch at a hundred. Most other loads were more than double that and some just unpredictable. I have not met a BLR that likes Barnes X bullets, but they undoubtedly do exist.......

Again, I caution that I never tried to shoot a .358 further than a hundred yards, and in general a spitzer is a better choice for longer ranges I think. A fellow could spend quite a few hapy hours whaling away at the range to find that perfect 200 yard load for his BLR in .358, I think.......

Sounds like fun to me!

Thanks to you all for your feedback regarding loads...I appreciate it. :)

Best wishes, Jeff.

I'll tell you Doug, I agonized over my 358 accuracy and had a hard time finding something it liked. Believe it or not, I was lucky to get a 6" group at 100 yards with a Nosler Ballistic Tip  ! Worst bullet I ever tried in that rifle!

As for the longer ranges, I'd rather know the trajectory of my RN bullet than have to try to get a pointed bullet that would shoot well in this gun. It may be a handicap but only slightly:) .

.358 Win.

Billy, Same for my Savage in .358Win, Blc(2), and 250gr. spire points. I wonder how the Hornady's would shoot in a Win.Model 70.:p

Joe, why didn't you TELL me you wanted a 99 in .358? I let that one go I had for five hundred bucks. It had the tang sight but also the standard stock crack..........
