Has anyone re barreled a bolt gun for 458 socom? I wanted a 458x2" but brass is available now and the standard bolt face short action should work fine for lighter bullet weights. Savage or howa action

I have done a couple on Remington actions, here is the last one I did, fun little rifle.

Personally, I would use a 308 Short action BUT use a 223 factory det mag and modify the lips to work with the fat case.

If you can find a DBM to use AR mags and fit the Savage, that would be similar to STB's build

I was thinking about the mdt LSS chassis and a 16.5" barrel that would give me the detachable mag. I haven't had much experience with them but the few I've played with I've liked

AICS mags are not very friendly to this type of build unless you are willing to tear a mag part and modify.

The SOCOM case feeds in the generic AR mag. There is only 1 DBM designed to work with this mag... and I don't think it was designed for the Savage.

If going polymer mag, I think you are going to have a lot of fun modifying to make them work and I expect it will be a pain.

Why I suggest the Factory 223 mag. It is easy to modify AND can be made to work with the shorter fat case.

I really like the bush rifle concept but you will likely find a lot easier project with a 35-08 or even a 40-08.

Good to know. Thanks. I have lots of 458 bullets on hand so I'd like to keep it a 458. Maybe the 458x2" is a better deal. I'm not set on the mdt stock but it would a nice upgrade. The rifle will be used for deer and bear in thick cover

I do need a 40 cal to lol

Big problem is reamers... unless you want to buy some custom reamer, most of what you want is not common in prefits manfs. So check and see what is offered so you can narrow down the build options. Mcgowen barrels does have a bunch of these 452/458 reamers.

If you want to buy a reamer AND the prefit manf is willing to use it (most are), then the world is your oyster. At which point, I would use a 300 Savage or 308 as my base case and neck up.... so much easier.

When you go 308 or magnum bolt face, many more options open up. Problem is you want a "small" big bore of which there is very little interest outside of the AR world (and unsure how popular that actually ended up being).

Also, make sure that the case you want to use will work with the weights of bullets you have. Most 458 bullets are built to stop large moving "vehicles" and will have very limited useage at the slower speeds you are suggesting.

The best options are actually handgun bullets... not sure what you have. But then diameter may be different....452 vs 458

So.... nice project, all sorts of things to work through.

Let me know if you need stuff.

Will Mcgowan do a 45 raptor barrel?

For some reason the 45 raptor creator thinks it is illegal to import the brass to Canada though; he will not even do it through legal channels.

I have 300 gr Hornady and 350 gr Hornady and 405 gr Remington flat nose so they're all 458 and good for low speed. I'm hoping to get this worked out then acquire all the parts. Thank you for your imput

NO reamer and if called the 45 Raptor... no as it is likely trademarked and proprietory. And I hope you saw this is based off the 452" HG bullets? OP is asking for 458 bullets.

Personally, I am not a fan of headspacing on a case mouth for high pressure rifle cartridges. You could form from conventional cases but a real pain as you have really nothing to chamber against so blowing out the case will get very interesting.

The 45 RAPTOR is a NO TAPER case... that can lead to a litany of issues wrt to chambering, extraction and headspacing.

This concept is most certainly not new.... Personally, since this is all about a "working" rifle, function above all else would be paramount to me. Positive headspacing so the cartridge always goes BANG is kind of important. As is getting the empty out and a new rd in.

The 450 Bushmaster is simply this wildcatt with a wider TAPERED case WHICH will allow for positive indexing. So why not just go with something that is supported by Hrn and there is load data , dies and brass... ammo too?

The 458 SOCOM uses 458" bullets, has a shoulder and supplies..

I would use a case with a shoulder, rim or belt long before trusting a bullet crimp to be perfect in headspacing a cartridge. And I would choose a cartridge with industry support over a 1 off that already has some design features not giving me a warm fuzzy.
