Booked Another African Hunt

i was weak but it was easy Doug but your fault ... remember your trick with the 300 win mag ... you saved the 375 ruger as Gate in the same time ... but that caliber is another choice that may work if ever you keep one rifle in that caliber.

all the best,

Sounds good, let us know how you get on....

My old man used to shoot tons of lions with his old 7x57, the bastards would come under the fence from Kruger and eat his tollies.... An old 4 x "D cell" every-ready torch - a flask full of coffee and his Mauser.... That's all he ever used.....

I personally don't think a lion would touch Gatehouse, even they are particular with what they eat!
Kudu, speak proper english you dutchman!! It's not "tollies", it's "yearlings" and on this side of the world they call it a "flashlight".:d

Regarding a rifle to take, Doug, why don't you create a splash on here and do it all with a good Winchester 95, in 405 Winchester calibre?
I know you have a good one you could take and I think you could do it all with it's iron sights.
I have one old Winchester factory cartridge that I could get to you, to take as a good luck symbol.
Bruce

I like this idea!! :)

not in Namibia. it is energy and let s say a 300 wea mag met the mini doesnt mean it is good ...

Patrick, wasnt in RSA the act changed in may 2011 for all provinces with based on bullet weight and no more on caliber or was it never put in place?

ref is SAF104522 27th may 2011, from act 10 of 2004.

yours truly.

Phil

Phil,

Not as far as my knowledge. I just completed my season in November with 3 DG hunts (1 x Lion and 2 x Buff) and nature conservation accompany us on the Lion hunt...

On Namibia it is true, but i know a lot of Outfitters in Namibia who uses the .375 as min. calibre. Zimbabwe a 93 x 62 (i think) calibre is also allowed

yes, old school did it and probably does it still...but i wouldn't suggest to anyone doing this...It is quite scarry if a Lion charge and you wonder if you have enough gun with you, and forget about the PH, it is still very , very scary...i know the Lion still come in from the KNP and still eat cattle...

Douglas ... can't believe you don't want to be the first one to shoot something with that .234 Penguin (or whatever it migh be finally termed) on the Dark Continent !

Certainly duiker and some of the smaller stuff. The 375 Sako HAS to go ... it's begging you. ;)

NEO..........you sir are a sick and perverted excuse for a human being.......to even suggest that I may taint my hunt with anything throwing a .277 bullet, how absolutely Cretan of you...........and I actually thought you might be an OK kinda guy, just goes to show..........you never know !!! Get back in the closet and remember "Don't ask, don't tell"................:d:d;);):p:p

Yep, that's the combo I want to hunt Africa with..........a 270 Win and a .375 Ruger...........Talk about "#### falling off" material, this would certainly happen to me, even contemplating taking these two cartridges on any hunt, let alone a pricy African one............ And I thought you guys liked me.............HHHHMMMMMMM

I'm actually going to e-mail my PH and see what he says about calibers for the female lion. A lot of operations do not consider female lion to be dangerous game. I'll get back to you on this.

Geez man, they already alluded to Douglas being dead on TV last week, now you want him to wildcat The New King to "The New Zoom Zoom"? How much more can a guy take in such a short period?

I am late to the party on this thread, but I am looking forward to updates on this trip later in the year.

Yes, some of us at home with wife and children will continue to live vicariously through Doug and his adventures on the internet -- only for about another 15 years for me however. Then I'll plan an adventure of my own.

Congrats on planning another trip anyways.

curious I noticed dislike for the .270 win, is that a dislike for all .277? aka 270wsm 270wby 6.8mm?

Anything and everything that uses a 277 bullet.............It is my own personal and irrational hatred, I don't ask anyone else to share it with me or even expect them to understand...........it just is what it is !!!! :d:d;);)

Ah BUM, such is my life.........stress, stress and more stress.........however are you familiar with the saying "water off a duck" ;);)

PH says 375 not necessary for lion, in fact he said "don't go out and buy a 375" (little does he know that I already own about 7 of them in 4 different flavors) he recommended a 300 with 200+ gn bullet of a bonded C+C design as opposed to a super penetrator like the TSX or Part. He recons hydrostatic shock does more damage to thin skinned critters like lion than does a long narrow wound channel such as a TSX would do. I wonder how he would feel about 110 gn bonded 23 caliber bullet............
