Why did you even ask the question? That is darn purty and darn near ideal for your next SA trip... bring the .470 NE as a backup.
But, you should still snag Ardent's Merkel...
Hoyt... just to make other guys envious.......Is it working?
Yes, it is working... but I am fickle, and easily swayed...
She is a beauty... would look spectacular alongside Angus' Merkel... same ammo, back each other up... exceedingly cool set for your trip... you only live once.
Now I'm totally convinced that Angus has offered you a commission...........don't try to deny it, you're grinding me way harder than he is..........he hasn't even PMd me with his sharpest pencil number yet...........
Well I couldn't resist............and a couple of the operators were quoting in Can dollars..........
Still finalizing details but it looks like late Sept to late Oct, 14-20 days somewhere in there and a very specific list of trophies.
Female lion.......Mr. Fuzzy needs a mate I decided.
Kudu bull 60"......outfitter was running his mouth off, so I pinned him on it and he guaranteed me a 60"+ Kudu....free range as well no fences
Gemsbok bull 40"......same as above......Kalahari hunt for the lion and gemsbok
Mountain Zebra......(Hartman's)
Grysbok.......another of the tiny ten I need and he said they had lots of 'em.
Now I'm contemplating calibers, I can take 2 rifles but I really don't want to...........would love to whack the lion with my double but that would necessitate 2 rifles for sure. Could quite nicely do it all with my 300 Wby, or 340 Wby.
Decisions, decisions decisions................
Given that I have almost every caliber and cartridge known to modern man, what 2 rifles/cartridges would you guys select for this extremely diverse size trophy list. And what single cartridge would you guys select to do it all..........
Kudu......I too have shot everything on the list or at least equivalent size critters over there.........Previous male lion I used 375 H&H and for everything else I have used 300 Wby mostly and a 300 WM. I'm sure I would have no problem dispatching a female lion with a 200 gn 30 cal bullet. I'll have to check with PH on how he feels about it........he may insist on the 375, I don't know him. Were I to take a sub caliber for the grysbok it would be one of my 234s, but I would prefer to just take one rifle.
A 60-inch free-range kudu...guaranteed??? Hmmm...
Rifle choice is easy...it must be that Sako .375H&H. In order to fully appreciate and enjoy it's virtues all throughout the trip...bring Gatehouse as well!
Or don't they bait lions in SA?
Using Gatehouse as lion bait reminds me of a story;
When we were first married (pushing 30 years back), my new bride decided to make me some fresh, homemade bread while I was at work... when I walked through the door, the smell of fresh bread filled the air... on the kitchen counter were six fat, golden loaves... my mouth started watering... the first sign of trouble, was trying to cut it with a bread knife, then the first bite revealed a flavour akin to dish soap... all the while, my wife was standing by, awaiting my response... I extracted my, more or less intact, teeth placed the bread on the counter, gave her a big hug, told her she was the most beautiful woman in the world, the center of my universe... and that she had just made the worst batch of bread in the history of the human race... she burst into tears... until she took a bite and the burst into laughter...
Here is where "Gatehouse" comes in...
Back in those days, I was guiding Ontario bear hunters... spring bait and fall spot n' stalk... it was spring bear season, so I took my wives six loaves of bread out to the bush and dropped one on each of six baits... bears have an incredible constitution and will even eat a rancid strike bait... long story short those loaves were still on the ground at the end of the season... with one bite out of each...
We have been laughing about that for almost three decades...
Hence... Gatehouse as lion bait...
My feelings are hurt.
