boresnake ripped apart while cleaning

Okay, I got the Viper out for inspection and comparison to the original Bore Snake, and test pull through a low round count, 16" 10/22 barrel. First off the cord is much lighter on The Viper. The cord does however feed into the nylon sleeve and actually attaches to the first wire brush, whereas the BS cord attaches to the Nylon sleeve, which is then attached to the brushes. Right away I think this is better, as the first wire brush should be the point of highest resistance. Both feed in to the barrel about the same up to the brushes. The Viper is a little tighter, but my BS has at least 200 pulls through a barrel, so less resistance should be expected. The biggest resistance on the Viper starts after the wire brushes though, at the first section of stitching on the nylon sleeve, and the section of sleeve following it. It became very tight once the the majority of the tail was in to the barrel. I would estimate at least 30 pounds of pull to get the Viper all the way through.

I don't think mine is tight enough that it is likely to break, but I will certainly be cautious for the first few uses.

For years I have used weed whacker line, foam ear plug and the patch.

If I recall they say to stretch it out (slightly pull on both ends to get any bunching or kinks out) then pull it through. Only need to put lube/cleaner in a couple places (at the beginning, then about 6-14 inches from the end. I found that by do this it was much easier to pass through the bore.

Haven't tried the 'Viper' models but regular snakes used in 325, 308, 204 and .22 also .45 and 9mm pistol and never had an issue. I slowly increase pressure until the snake starts and then pull in one continuous motion. Great to have during a days hunting in rain/snowy conditions.
Sounds like the Viper models are questionable, contact the company customer service rep

Ahhh the dirt rope.... I never use it. It works good for light cleaning in field but don't use it as your only choice. After the initial cleaning it has deposits on it embedded that just can damage the bore.

the manufacturer does suggest cleaning after use or don't you wipe down your cleaning rod(s)?

I'm pretty sure the majority of people who are breaking these bore snakes are either:

a) lying
b) pulling the cord at an angle that is not in line with the bore
c) not taking care of it and have damaged the line before putting it through the bore

It's not difficult to use. Saying that they cause damage is hilarious. It works decently to clean the looser stuff out of your barrel. By no means is it the final answer. Even if they do break, there should be a section of the thicker section to pull on. Either forward or back.

Worst thing the army ever did was give troops bore snakes.. I have had to drill afew out of barrels and good luck getting snow or mud out of your barrel with a limp bore snake.

Half asleep weapon cleaning and I figured, quick pull thru that could happen. Didnt you, Joe or Hutch have to remove one from my rifle and worst mistake I made was trying to push it back. Sending my issued rifle to the weapon tech because I got a boresnake when the pull cord broke. Embarrassing. Last time I used them.

I use viper bore snakes on all my guns and they do a good job. The one i have for my AR is SUPER tight going through the bore though. Every time i use it I think the cord is going to break. Lol bore os prestine with one pull though.
