I built 2 Garands from parts last summer, and just ordered 4 more receivers. If the gun comes into the house in parts, somehow it does not increase the FCAW (the Firearm Count According to Wife).

I use the same reasoning for AR-15 uppers...wife (eyes about to roll): "Is that a new gun in that package that arrived today?"

Me (looking her straight in the eye - never let them see fear, confident/nonchalant in my reply): "Nope, it's just an upper."

Then change the subject...

What's the ball park cost of putting together an Garand? How mechanically inclined do you have to be?

With a $28 dollar receiver I would think you could put a real nice one together for about $1000. Maybe even less depending on where you buy your parts and how long you search the EE for deals. You need to be experienced to install the barrel. Other than that its pretty easy. Usually installing and finish reaming a barrel will run about $100 from a gunsmith (I use Vulcan). Someone on this forum will probably even do it for a case of beer if you search around.
