What I wish someone would make is an aerodynamic slug thats 385 grains, that can be loaded in standard wad or other widely avaliable componet. So I could crack that 2000fps barrier and stop buying 20 dollar box of slugs...
I am at 1600fps with lee slugs I used them for hunting but they drop off way to fast. to make them useful in my long range scoped rifled shotgun.
They light up the indoor range in a 8.5" grizzly![]()
Maybe I'll take inspiration from the Lyman wadcutter mold that looks like a giant pellet for an air rifle and make a diamond point version. Think that would fit the bill?![]()
^I had a few 20 gauge Lyman Sabot slugs I handloaded for my M37 Ithaca, and I purchased later an M87 fully rifled barrel. It's been a few years since I've used it, but IIRC @50 yards I had really good groups with the iron sights.I prefer the Lyman Sabot slug big@$$ wadcutter pellet looking slug. 515 gr. cast in the purest lead I can find. Lots of data, tested. Wadcutter profile should help transfer/dump energy into game.Have also been shown to be capable of very good accuracy.Plus these moulds are cheaper than custom, and are good quality.

I just checked my old notes, my M87 20 inch Ithaca barrel has a 1:32 twist rate. (Sandusky made) I do not have the muzzle velocity recorded for these loads though.Yeh they work great at 50 yards try getting them to hit paper at 150 or 200 yards, in southern ontario you cant use rifles where we hunt deer...
Have you checked the "12 ga from Hell" thread? Ol' Ed has some pretty interesting ideas that might work for you.
Msg.drew, did you ever try those older Winchester BRI .40 calibre sabot style slugs? (2 3/4inch 20 gauge)
The ones I have, appear to have a lead slug in them.
